The Merriest of Us

Look upon the merriest of us,

Look at us happy few.

We thought we'd see no worry or fuss,

We thought happiness was all we knew.

We did not know what came over us

On the day our lives turned south.

It's brute force struck like a blunderbuss.

It left a terrible taste in my mouth.

No pain would ever come our way,

At least that's what we thought,

But then the light was taken away

and our innocence was bought.

Now look at them,

The happy few

Eat at the stem,

They take not its brew.

What happiness today is free

There must be a price to pay.

It turns out trust and our soul is the fee,

And to most this news is dismay.
