It was 4 am, and Tessa was alone in her bedroom.

This was ridiculous. How on earth was she going to meet someone new in thirty seconds? She rolled over in bed and sighed. Maybe her watch was broken. Not that she cared. She had never cared... and yet, she had kept finding herself staring at the numbers as the years went by.

She squeezed her eyes shut and told herself to sleep. Nothing was going to happen. It was the middle of the night and she was the only thing in a mile that was awake. Even so, her eyes cracked open to watch the final seconds tic away. When they were gone, it'd be proof that she was right all along. There's no such thing as fate.

Tessa froze at the sound of her window sliding farther open. Through the darkness, she spotted a shadow climb into her bedroom. It immediately dropped to the floor and Tessa saw the flashing lights of a police car fly past. When the figure craned his neck to watch the cops disappear, Tessa caught sight of his face in the faint moonlight. She didn't realize that she had sat up until his gaze turned towards her. Their eyes met, and they both froze at the sound of two simultaneous clicks. His attention dropped to his wrist, where his watch was no longer attached. After a moment, he raised his head and gave Tessa a sheepish grin.

"Hey," he muttered.

Crap.
