                    ________________

The early morning sunlight caught the glimmer of crimson red wings that sparkled like rubies, throwing the sparkles upon the mirror flowers near the emerald trees with obsidian black trunks and branches.

The silver petals melted the touch of sunlight, pressing the warm liquid nectar to drip like lava down its center. The flowers looked like they were made of mirrors, surveying everything in sight.

Like camera flashes, the mirror flowers captured brief, teasing glimpses of attractive black hair, fair skin, a red earring, a stylish black suit, a very slim handsome body, and the crimson red wings whose ruby sparkle flickered across the mirror flowers that tried to capture the reflection.

But the crimson red wings continued to fly towards another part of the garden, taking the ruby sparkle with him. The mirror flowers sighed, longing for a recapture of his attractive appearance.

Not that there wasn't enough beauty around them, but the mirror flowers were vain, liking to show off and try to steal sparkles.

The mirror flowers were scattered, appearing in most locations. They successfully caught the sparkles from the holographic pink butterfly shaped flowers, the beautiful red roses with saffron petals, the elusive purple violet flowers that turned invisible upon touch, the darkish orange flowers with dark blue stripes that were like mini fireworks on repeat, and the big bright yellow ones that were way too sparkly, even for the audacious mirror flowers.

There were pylor trees that were completely clear but not see-through, creating the illusion of glass. The niada plants pranced like graceful dancers as puffed roxxins floated across the vanilla scented red grass like white dandelion seeds.

Instead of bees, there were pollinators called beaus (pronounced bows) because they were shaped like bowties. Beaus had metallic pink bodies and thin holographic glass like wings that flew from flower to flower like dragonflies, making a musical chime sort of sound.

Unlike bees of planet Earth, beaus of planet Iredescent had no stingers. Their wings were like mini helicopter blades, capable of sharp cuts, but no painful sting.

Several more flashes of the mirror flowers captured the stunning landscape of planet Iredescent, including the forests, beaches, canyons, mountains, and volcanoes, but no deserts. Sparkling oceans and cascading waterfalls provided an aquatic home for the merpeople.

The Iredescent people were either winged or finned. The finned ones were able to walk on land with legs, and their hair sparkled in the sunlight. The winged ones were able to have up to two superhuman abilities, and they had a skin shimmer.

Five continents included Irisopal, Tulipar, Lilacilene, Peonyeon, and Roselartzen. Each continent was divided into eleven regions: Mitop, Pech, Asgoth, Yarka, Rekkvor, Erlain, Lyark, Derrisom, Ulspef, Ose, and Kaweja.

The region of Lyark had many beautiful gardens for the people's enjoyment. But the most beautiful garden was found in the royal garden surrounding the Ruler of Iredescent's home, Mirror Castle.

Tren Tristanle stood in the royal garden on a walkway, enjoying the quiet peaceful nature in the early morning. Like his father Suduko, Tren was tall and muscular. Sunlight caressed his midnight blue hair and warmed his dark tanned skin. He wore a sleeveless royal blue shirt and pants of a darker shade, the material shimmering like the water fountains.

His deep sapphire blue wings relaxed behind him, almost touching his body. There was a blue dahlia flower that twirled slowly in his hand. The mirror flowers gazed at the blue shimmer before looking away, flashing brightly upon the sudden reappearance of the ruby sparkle that caught their attention earlier.

"There you are," a familiar male voice said softly, the crimson red wings furling as the ruby sparkle landed near Tren. "I was wondering where you were."

Tren didn't turn around, neither did he stop twirling the blue dahlia flower.

"It seems the dahzulias are in bloom, finally." The voice was closer, coming from the man that stood at his side.

"Indeed," Tren murmured, his gaze cast downward on the flower.

"Alright, tell me what's troubling you." The voice was firm, no longer casual. A hand moved Tren's shoulder, forcing him to turn around.

And so, Tren's deep blue eyes met the crimson red eyes of his cousin, Crimson Leeiyor.

Even the sunlight shone in awe of the man with attractive black hair, fair skin, a red earring, a stylish black suit, a very slim handsome body, and crimson red wings whose ruby sparkle caught the attention of jealous mirror flowers.

Like his Phoenix elders, Crimson usually wore black. He excelled in a fashion design career and was previously trained by the galaxy's most esteemed fashion designer named Mallen Zalić. Since his mentor's death, Crimson became the new galaxy's most esteemed fashion designer. His designs were as legendary as his mentor's designs, if not more legendary.

Both men were the same age, born on the same day in the same month, but Crimson was older than Tren by a few hours. The similarity ended there, since the two men were as different as the moon and sun, yet they were as close as brothers.

"Just the usual burden of royalty. Nothing different," Tren said in response to Crimson's inquiry.

"The burden that causes you to wonder about a quiet morning walk, twirling a dahzulia flower in your hand."

Tren sighed, tossing the dahzulia flower atop the patch of flowers. "So much is expected of me, but I don't feel ready to take on the task. I don't feel cut out to be a Ruler. I feel like I would do better as a soldier or commander. More freedom....and women."

"So you spend your time fooling around with women, avoiding your royal duties and responsibilities," Crimson said sternly in disapproval of Tren's indulgence.

"And you hardly consort with women, spending too much time with your own duties and responsibilities," Tren shot back indignantly.

"I'd rather be responsible than foolish."

"I'd rather be somewhere in outer space, traveling the galaxy without a worry on my mind."

"You ought to help your father instead of running away from your responsibilities."

"Just like you keep running away from the expectations of your Phoenix elders," Tren sharply said back. "They expect you to eventually turn into your Phoenix form. It is your nature. You can't keep ignoring the Phoenix side of you, just like I can't ignore the wings on my back. It is a part of you, Crimson."

Crimson bristled at the truthful accusation, his wings lowering as a shadow of sadness eclipsed him. "Seems we both have things we are avoiding," he said, sighing heavily.

Just then Suduko appeared in the garden, calling Tren's name. Calling him back to the reality of the responsibilities he was trying to avoid.

Alarmed, Tren seized Crimson's arm and whispered urgently, "Hide!"

They hid in the thick rose bushes that towered the height of both men. Unlike Earth roses, Iredescent roses had metallic silver stems and leaves. The red was a vivid ruby or crimson, ironically eagerly reaching towards Crimson as he hid in the rose bushes with Tren.

Keeping his voice low, Crimson said, "Tren, why are we hiding in the garden? We're not kids anymore." Rose thorns poked him in the back, tempting Crimson to burn them with his flames, but Tren placed a hand on his arm, keeping him from doing so. "How come you always drag me into some kind of trouble?"

Suduko's voice carried across the garden as he said, "Tren, it is expected of you to attend today's lessons. It is part of your education and royal upbringing. Do I need to handcuff you to the castle? Must I call your uncle Iro over? I know you're hiding in the garden." Suduko sighed in exasperation, saying, "At least Crimson is sensible. Wish my son would learn from his example."

Crimson nudged Tren, tossing him a meaningful glance. "See? Even your father thinks this is silly."

"Usually it was your father who brought out the water whip, which was ineffective against your fire powers," said Tren.

"Better than your father's belt," Crimson said back. "That was effective."

Tren had to agree.

Suduko's back was turned towards where Tren and Crimson were hiding. Shaking his head, Suduko murmured to himself, "Tren is just as stubborn as Mirella with blackberry vanilla saffron pancakes. Perhaps Crimson knows where he is. He is almost always with Tren."

To their shock and dismay, Crimson's comect started ringing, alerting of an incoming call from Suduko.

"Turn it down! Turn it down!" Tren urged Crimson, who struggled to reach for his comect, his efforts impended by the poking rose bushes.

"Hey!" Crimson exclaimed when Tren seized the comect out of his pants pocket. He tried to turn the volume down, but the comect kept ringing.

"Why won't it shut up? It's making too much noise! Burn it, Crimson!" Tren urged.

"No way!" Crimson protested. "How would you like it if I burned your comect?"

"I would welcome your flames if it would keep us out of trouble!"

"You mean keep you out of trouble."

"Says the guy who roasted all my marshmallows from last week, and melted the chocolate."

"That was for my mother! She loves melted s'mores. She likes them soft, not hard. So I melted the graham cracker to a bread-like consistency, and then I added the melted chocolate and marshmallows."

A realization came to Crimson. "Wait....so those were your marshmallows I roasted?" He suddenly remembered the royal castle brand that was on the package of marshmallows. That was definitely my bad, Crimson thought, but he wasn't going to admit that to Tren, not when he owed him marshmallows.

Just then Suduko froze, confusion appearing on his face, at the sound of the faraway ringtone playing on Crimson's comect. He began to step towards the direction of the rose bushes, alarming Tren and Crimson.

Crimson murmured, "Glam it" and burned the comect with his flames, careful not to set anything else on fire.

Red flames covered the comect, destroying it almost instantly. The comect turned into glittery dark red charcoal that crumbled into ashes. The two young men paid solemn respects to the self-burial of a comect no more. Tren even placed a rose atop where the comect ashes fell.

Crimson glared angrily at Tren. "You owe me a new comect."

Tren grinned cheerfully at Crimson. "I'll get you a shimmery blue one."

"Red only."

"Hot pink."

"Crimson red."

"Pinkish red."

"Crimson. Red. Like me." Fury threatened to erupt from the depths of the Crimson Phoenix's eyes.

Unfortunately, Tren was immune to intimidation from Phoenixes. "Alright, purplish pinkish red."

An aggitated groan didn't appease the fury. "You're being obnoxiously annoying."

A mischievous smile provoked the fury. "Purplish, pinkish blueish red."

"Urrgh, forget it," Crimson murmured. "I'll get a new comect myself."

"But the comect store doesn't open until eight. And I haven't had breakfast yet."

"Your fault you were so moody."

"Your fault for interrupting my moodiness."

"Your fault for – "

Tren suddenly pushed Crimson out of the rose bushes, the latter hastily brushing rose petals and leaves off his neatly pressed clothing.

"We gotta run! He's getting close!" Tren whispered.

"Your fault for getting me into this," Crimson muttered under his breath, finishing his sentence as he followed his adventurous cousin. "This is so childish, Tren."

Tren ignored Crimson, stopping in a forest clearing surrounded by glittery pink flower trees with frosted mauve berries called romaserry.

"You call this a good hiding place?" Crimson asked, looking around the very open clearing.

"And my breakfast," Tren said, picking romaserry berries from the trees.

Crimson shook his head in incredulity. "You're unbelievable."

I suppose this is better than rose thorns poking my back, Crimson thought, straightening his clothes. He sighed in exasperation upon the sight of Tren's shirt.

"You've got romaserry berry stains on your shoulder."

"So?" Tren proceeded to enjoy the berries, not minding the stain at all.

"You'll need to change shirts when we return to the castle," Crimson insisted.

"My shirt is still clean."

"No, it isn't."

"Of course not, Mr. Stylish Black Suit Fashion Model."

"How perfectly annoying, Mr. Romaserry Berry Stained Shoulder."

Tren shrugged carelessly, to Crimson's frustration.

"Why don't you listen to me, headstrong dear cousin of mine?" Crimson said to Tren.

"Why don't you have some fun, serious dear cousin of mine?" Tren said to Crimson.

"How's this for fun?" Crimson asked, his eyes blazing with red Phoenix fire as he materialized a red fireball with his red flames. He raised it high over his head, preparing to throw it.

Tren's eyes widened in surprise. He quickly ducked to avoid the sailing fireball. "Hey, that's not fair!" he exclaimed.

The fireball landed directly in front of Suduko's blue shoes, torching the red vanilla scented grass and burning it, leaving a gash that sunk into the ground. A tiny chunk of cinder rock plinked out, bouncing harmlessly on Suduko's shoe.

Burnt vanilla. Interesting scent, Suduko thought upon looking at the scorched grass, with smoke going off the blades. Charred grass. Not so interesting.

"Tren Tristanle and Crimson Leeiyor," said the Ruler of Iredescent, sighing heavily. "I don't recall landscaping as part of your day's lessons."

From the clearing, it was clear that the moment of hiding was over, and it was time to face the music, the dreaded lessons, the responsibilities, and whatever punishment Suduko had in mind.

"No hiding this time," Crimson murmured sidelong to Tren, stepping out of the clearing to show himself in full view.

Tren reluctantly followed Crimson, who placed a wing feather on his shoulder to try to hide some of the berry stain, but Tren brushed the wing feather off, scowling.

A hint of an amused smile tugged at his mouth as Suduko looked sternly at his son. However, he had to maintain a dignified look befitting the Ruler of Iredescent. So the stern look remained, and the amused smile slid underneath like a shark fin hiding in the ocean, waiting to resurface.

"Good morning, Father," Tren murmured contritely, while Crimson said casually, "Good morning, Uncle Suduko. The prinzonen larks are singing quite nicely today, aren't they?"

The amused smile resurfaced, like a dolphin jumping out of the water and into the sunshine. "Quite the fascinating song, unlike your comect ringtone that I thought I heard earlier. I suppose you burnt your comect again, didn't you?"

Crimson's eyes widened in surprise. "How did you – ?!"

Suduko held up a rose, the same one Tren had placed atop the comect ashes. There was a dark red glittered streak on the rose that indicated charcoal.

Suduko sighed, lowering the rose. "I am aware the both of you are avoiding royal duties and Phoenix responsibilities. It seems there has been too much pressure, so I decided I will take you to the Eykrie Durech."

Confusion and surprise enveloped Tren and Crimson. This was certainly not expected. It wouldn't even be considered a punishment. Usually Suduko would request a Phoenix elder to place a firewall over the castle, keeping the two young men inside for their lessons and out of mischief.

A Phoenix was unable to break the firewall of his predecessor, so Crimson wouldn't be able to get out of Iro's firewall or Raistin's firewall. Iro was able to bypass Crimson's firewall, but not Raistin's. And Raistin was able to bypass all firewalls; there was no limit to his Phoenix power.

"The Eykrie Durech?" Tren repeated.

"Ruler's command," Suduko said in a dignified tone, turning to hide a playful smile. He enjoyed such amusement with his son and nephew.

Tren and Crimson glanced at each other and shrugged, oblivious to Suduko's playfulness. They hastened to follow, taking off into the sunlit morning dawn sky.

The mirror flowers attempted to snatch sparkles from their wings, but they shied away when they saw the impressive shadow of the Ruler of Iredescent's wings fly over them, followed by Tren's stunning blue wings and Crimson's glittery red wings.

The Eykrie Durech was their favorite restaurant, known for fantastic food and awesome light shows. Crimson in particular was so fond of the light shows that he even started learning how to recreate the light shows for his own recreational use.

The outside of the building was shaped like a holographic bird in hues of orange and yellow, inspired by the Phoenix. The restaurant had the tendency to put anyone in a better mood upon entering it. Sure enough, Tren felt his mood lift as he took in the scent of fresh barbeque, tender steaks, liko drinks, and the highly sought-after amarettisu crème filled pastry puff desserts called rakya.

As always, a seat was chosen in the far corner, where the Ruler, his son, and nephew could see everything around them, while staying hidden from sight.

There were no bodyguards, since Crimson was with Tren and Suduko. Since the murder of the Nyssi family, a Phoenix was designated to protect the Ruler of Iredescent and his family, firewalling the castle every night while they slept. Usually Raistin and Iro took turns protecting, but when Crimson grew older and started spending more time with the Tristanles, Crimson became the new bodyguard.

"Mirella is with the Phoenixes, but Teal should be coming over soon," Suduko told Tren and Crimson.

Just then Suduko, Tren, and Crimson heard a crash outside the restaurant. "That's definitely Teal," Suduko murmured, shaking his head. "He crashed his ship again. Remind me to suspend his license for the fourteenth time."

"And yet, he can't seem to keep his fins in the water," Tren said, sipping at a liko drink. A liko was like Earth's lemonade, flavored with bergamot and yuzu.

Though he sometimes enjoyed a liko, Tren's favorite drink was pomalenaveka, a popular fruit juice that tasted like the combination of pomegranate, raspberry, and blackberry.

The Ekyrie Durech had many spectacular desserts, including Suduko's favorite sparkly tiramisu with marscapone cream and espresso, Tren's favorite molten chocolate lava cake with a stunning galaxy blue glitter drizzle, and Crimson's favorite éclair with a shimmery amaretto center and a chocolate red velvet layer, topped with glossy light purple pearls.

There were wonderful meals to choose from, including Suduko's favorite steak and barbeque meat from muskrenci and koroveef animals, Tren's favorite mura which was a buckwheat type meal with glass fish, and Crimson's favorite spaghetti called tokmic rasta with redcurrant spice.

And of course, several dessert options included soufflé sorennia pancakes with caramel strawberries, soft milky waffamakki fondue that looked like holographic bubbles, orange cupcakes flavored with fruity riskarisk berries, red flower-shaped vitamin gummies called demivalentine, and a dandelion flavored custard pudding called tvivaleta.

Drink options included black seltzer called niravar. Rose-shaped ice cubes melted into the brilliance of water that sparkled like shimmery liquid diamonds. And the bavvar tasted like a blueberry milkshake.

Teal burst inside the Eykrie Durech just as Suduko set down his niravar, Tren sipped his pomalenaveka, and Crimson raised his glass of plumcurrant. A server poured a glass of liko, aware of Teal's fondness for that drink.

"Hello, ship-crasher and restaurant-dasher," Tren said, continuing to drink his pomalenaveka. He had no pity for his brother, who was somewhat accident prone.

The Tristanle family was used to his antics, though the Phoenixes felt the need to correct such antics. Therefore, Crismon said in suggestion, "How about you try a different career path? Perhaps dancing?"

Tren nearly spit out his drink. "Teal, a dancer? He would trip over his own feet!"

"Actually, it would teach him discipline, coordination, and balance," Suduko said thoughtfully. "Perhaps I ought to enroll Teal in dance and martial arts classes. Excellent suggestion, Crimson."

Teal gulped down the glass of liko, slouching slightly, while Suduko, Tren, and Crimson sat with their backs straight, never slouching. Even Tren didn't slouch.

At least he has good manners and behavior. If only he could get his clothing in order, Crimson thought, feeling as though Tren intentionally wore unstylish clothing just to aggravate him.

They should've named this place 'the collection of delicacies', Suduko thought as he looked over the menu. He watched the paper cascade on the table as Tren pressed it down with a hand, saying, "Pizza! We should definitely order pizza."

"Not pizzal?" Suduko asked curiously.

Pizzal, or Iredescent pizza, was a glittery ube purple chocolate caramel bread with walnut sauce and a brownie crumble layer, topped with zvyozi, star-shaped ice cream with a thin cake outside, ice cream inside.

A total contrast to Earth pizza, a delicious flat bread meal with red tomato sauce and cheese. Cheese wasn't common on Iredescent, so pizza was considered a delicacy.

Earth pizza was simply called pizza; Iredescent pizza was called pizzal.

"Yup, pizza," Tren verified, satisfied with his choice.

Crimson and Teal didn't disagree, and Suduko thought it was a good choice, so Earth pizza it was.

"Care for a refill?" the server asked Tren, who raised his glass of pomalenaveka and said, "Sure! I'll take some."

"And I'll take you," said a pink-haired woman that sauntered over to the table, winking flirtatiously at Tren.

"Great," Teal murmured as a group of women flocked to Tren's side of the table. "More admirers. Which one would you be sleeping with tonight?"

Tren kicked him from under the table, causing Teal to yelp in pain. Suduko raised his eyebrows, as if warning his son not to engage in such behavior.

Crimson sighed, sending a burst of red flames to scare them away. When the women persisted to seek Tren's attention, Crimson surrounded the table with a red firewall, murmuring, "We get a hidden table, and still they annoy. Maybe we should relocate to Cadburnia."

"Cadburnia is in the middle of nowhere, hidden deep within Crow Forest," said Teal, looking askance at Crimson. "Nobody goes there."

"Nobody except the Phoenixes," Crimson reminded Teal, giving him a meaningful look. "We live there."

Tren knew that Crimson often went to Cadburnia, not just to visit his family and chat with his grandfather. Tren usually went with Crimson, feeling completely safe in Cadburnia, even though most people perceived it as a scary place.

Cadburnia was the home of the Phoenixes, located in a hidden forest guarded by thorns and surrounded by fire.

Fire only Crimson, Iro, and Raistin could pass through.

Crimson always parted the fire for Tren every time he visited. It was Raistin's home, the only home he felt truly comfortable in, even though he had a majestic room at the castle. The gemstone home resembled a volcano, parts of it formed of multicolor black obsidian opal. It was simple but cozy, grand and impressive in its own way. Tren felt quite safe there, even though others didn't.

But that was the point, Tren thought. Making others think it wasn't a good place so they wouldn't try to venture in, uninvited. Little did they know that their fears were completely unnecessary, since the Phoenix that lives in Cadburnia is the Protector of planet Iredescent.

Born of flames, raised among the crows, the Phoenix lived with the Vasyans on planet Vasya before his move to planet Earth after their kind became extinct. Raistin Fenice was the last of his kind until he met an Iredescent woman named Tereza Rejkavik and moved to planet Iredescent with her. An eternal being, Raistin was dismayed that he remained young while Tereza grew old and died, but one joy came from the loneliness of his immortality: he was no longer alone.

His son Iro and his grandson Crimson were also what he was: a Phoenix. Even though they were half Phoenix half Iredescent, Iro and Crimson were just as eternally immortal as Raistin. Phoenixes were immune to death. Raistin would continue to live on for thousands of years, watching others die, but he was never able to die.

It was a cruel fate, but at least Raistin wasn't lonely. Even though his wife had grown old and died, he had his son and his family.

Iro's wife Antha was alive and not yet old, so Iro still had an extended happiness. But Crimson resented knowing that someday he would have to watch a future wife grow old and die while he lived on forever. He didn't see the point of living when the person he was to share his life with would only be a temporary happiness. Multiple different wives in his endless lifetime weren't something he wanted, but he wasn't given a choice.

Because of this, Crimson called himself Crimson Leeiyor, taking on his mother's maiden name instead of his father's last name, because his mother wasn't immortal. He secretly wished he was fully Iredescent, even attempting to turn himself into an Iredescent, but because Crimson was half Phoenix half Iredescent, his Phoenix side prevented him from becoming fully Iredescent.

Raistin and Iro knew that Crimson rejected his Phoenix side, hating the immortality that came with it. They longed for the day Crimson would embrace his Phoenix side, accepting who he was instead of wishing for something impossible.

The topic of Cadburnia and Phoenix immortality was forgotten upon the sight of Earth pizza on a shimmery blue plate.

"Four cheese Earth pizza, exactly as requested," the server said with a smile, placing the Earth pizza on the table. The wonderful scent of pizza wafted around their corner of the restaurant, setting them in a delicious mood.

"Thank you! Earth pizza is the best pizza in the galaxy!" Tren exclaimed, already biting into his pizza slice.

"I'm curious. How did Earth pizza end up on an Iredescent menu?" Crimson asked, wondering how that was possible. "How did our kind even learn about this alien food?"

Suduko explained, "Planet Iredescent sends spies called assignees that investigate alien planets, including planet Earth. We learned about pizza through former assignees sent to planet Earth. We then recreated our favorite alien food through Iredescent recreation materialization technology.

"This technology recreates any object or material. It transfers particles of atoms and matter, sort of transporting or teleporting it to another place, and rematerializing it to its original form in that new location. Similar to 3-D printing, but different. Quite an astonishing technology."

"So that's where this Earth pizza came from," said Tren, beginning to understand. "Pizza was invented on planet Earth, and we used our technology to recreate it so we can enjoy pizza on planet Iredescent."

When everyone finished eating and the server was clearing the table, Tren said contently, "Well, that was really good pizza."

"I'll say," Crimson agreed. "Who knew Earth food could taste so good?"

"And here we thought Iredescent food was from the heavens," said Teal, floundering as he nearly tripped over a napkin.

Tren rolled his eyes, thinking, What a klutz.

As they were exiting the Ekyrie Durech, Suduko checked his comect upon hearing the vibration of an incoming message.

It was from Markerer.

The Eclipse family and I have arrived at the beach. Will update you later.

Have a fun vacation! Suduko responded, smiling as he placed the comect back in his pocket and returned attention to his own family. Just a fun family vacation. No danger, no Redek. Everything is wonderful.

Or so it seemed.

Fun fact! (well, not really haha)

Just like Tren and Crimson, my siblings and I hid in the garden whenever we got in trouble. My parents' garden in the backyard was the inspiration for the royal garden Tren is so fond of. It had a TON of many different flowers ― and bees.
