A few minutes later they were both sitting down and enjoying a hearty meal. Kian was hooked from the first bite.
"Where'd you learn to cook like that?" He asked, wiping the sauce from his mouth.
"My mum. We used to watch cooking shows together and bake together."
"You didn't mention her when I asked you about your family last night." Kian inquired.
"She's dead; she died in a car accident when I was eleven." Haley answered quietly, looking at her plate.
"Oh. Sorry." Kian countered, feeling like he ripped open a wound, feeling his own loss.
But it didn't stop Haley from talking.
"My dad didn't always ignore me. After Mum died, he did a pretty good job of taking care of me. But, then a few anniversaries went by and he started to get angry and when I was old enough to take care of myself he just stopped caring. I got a good job fresh out of school and Dad, in a rare moment of caring, got me a flat. Hard to believe I screwed up this bad." Haley put her head in her hand and looked like she was going to cry.
"It's okay, Haley. Don't say someone doesn't care; you've got one right here." Kian assured her, placing his hand over hers.
Haley didn't jerk away from him. She blushed adorably at his touch, and gave him a smile.
"I know a lot about losing people," he said softly, thinking of the two women he lost.
"From being a doctor?" She asked him, unaware.
"Yeah," he said, trying to push them from his mind.

When dinner was finished, Haley took care of the dishes and Kian sat down on the sofa.
"How would you like a movie?" Kian asked her, not feeling like watching television that night.
"Sounds good."
"What's your favorite one?" Kian asked her, thinking she was probably the chick-flick type.
"Jurassic Park."
"Whoa. Into jump scares?"
"You don't mind if I happen to grab your arm at a scary part?" Haley came back, with just a hint of teasing.
Kian rolled his eyes.
"As long as it's not to cop feel of my biceps." He joked, flexing his arms, noticing she was looking at his tattoos.

Kian made a batch of popcorn and he and Haley curled up to watch the movie. After the credits rolled, Haley took a shower and curled up in the guest bed with her e-reader. Kian went to bed, and noticed that same old photo of him and Bea. She had brown hair; and Haley had brown hair.
It's coincidence, that's all. A lot of women have brown hair. I just gave a poor girl a place to stay until she gets back on her feet. He told himself. He kept repeating it in his head until he fell asleep.
