TOPIC 1: EDUCATION, A Reflection of Society

It is the truth to say that: Education is a mirror of a culture.

Visit schools anywhere in the world and you will probably notice a number of similarities. There are students, teachers, books, blackboards, and exams everywhere. However, a school system in one country is not identical to the system in any other country. It cannot be exactly the same, because each culture is different.

For example:

In Kenya - a developing country where economy is based on agriculture and tourism. The number 90% of all students finish primary school and they don't continue on secondary school. This statistic will make you surprised. Some Kenya family are very poor that they can't afford to their children go to school. Other children quit school to work on their family's farm. The farmer parents don't want their children to have a formal education and some rural tribal don't see it relevance. It seems to be the same with the countryside education in Vietnam.

In Japan, almost all students complete not only primary school but also high school. Every student has equal material of studying. It's difficult to get a university degree, but whole family is high status when their sons get university degree. So, students need great discipline, self control, gives up their hobbies, pass many "hell exams" in order to receive this degree.

In Britain, social class is very important. In the nine first years at the school, all students learn the same material. After that they take a national exam. Graduated from good school or university help them to get the best jobs, so most of them want to attend at the private expensive school but just a few percents of them, the upper class student can do.

In USA, you are never too old to learn. USA is more democratic than other country, but it also has serious problems like: drug, crime...in the school.
