Chapter 23

Shaw

I had barely woken up when someone started pounding on the front door. I walked out of the bedroom and went to the front door, but instead of opening it I looked through the peephole to see who it was.

       Dad.

       Great.

I wouldn't be surprised if Viola told him where I lived. From time to time, he tried talking to me and get me to forgive him, but I just wasn't having it. All the things I went through in the past might have been prevented if I had someone there for me. But he chose to walk out.

I walked away from the door, not wanting to answer it. I was going to head to the kitchen, but I stopped when Dad started talking on the other side of the door. "I know you're in there, Shaw!" he said. "I just wanted to talk!"

I scoffed, still not answering the door. Why couldn't he understand that I didn't want to talk to him?

Dad knocked on the door once again, and this time it caused Holden to walk out of the bedroom. "What's with all the knocking?" Holden asked.

I pressed my pointer finger to my lips, telling him to be quiet as my dad continued talking. "Shaw, I know you're still mad at me, but you can at least give me a chance like your sister did," Dad said. "I don't get why you're holding a grudge over it."

I was so tempted to opinion the door and tell him to screw off, but that would include looking at his face and I wasn't in the mood to do that.

"Fine, don't answer the door," Dad said. "But you're going to have to accept that I'm here to say. You might as well get used to it."

I walked over to the living room and flopped down on the couch. Holden walked over and sat down beside me. "Was that you're dad?" he asked.

"Yeah," I said with a sigh. "Am I overreacting? Should I give him a chance?"

"No, of course not," Holden said. "He hasn't done anything that shows why you should forgive him. All he did was move to Spruceworth. If he really wants you to forgive him, he has to prove it."

"Yeah, I guess you're right," I said. "But the thing is... Many people gave me a second chance. Wouldn't it be kind of hypocritical of me if I don't give him a second chance?"

"What? No," Holden said. "You actually tried to change and showed that you deserve a second chance. You shouldn't feel guilty for not giving your dad a chance."

"It's just a bit hard with Viola being on his side," I said. "Telling him where I am, where I live. She's going to make things worse."

"Have you tried talking to her?" Holden asked.

"No, not yet," I said. "I probably should though. Anyway, don't you have to head over to the school to pick up your report card?"

"Yes, but I would rather not go," Holden said. "I can't fail if I don't look at my report card."

I chuckled. "You're not going to fail. You said it yourself that you had been doing a lot better because of Jane helping you."

"That doesn't mean I did well for my final exams," Holden said. "If I fail, I'll be in summer school. And if I fail summer school, I'll have to go back to school in the fall. So I would rather sit here, oblivious to my grades."

"Would it make you feel better if I came with you?" I asked.

"Only a tiny bit," Holden said. "I still would rather sit here."

"Not happening," I said, standing up from the couch and pulling him up with me. "Come on, let's go."

"In our pyjamas?" Holden asked. "Not happening."

"Then let's get changed so you can get your report card," I said. "I know you did well, so you don't have anything to worry about."

After Holden and I get changed, we left the house and headed to the school for Holden to pick up his report card. Once we got to the school, I waited outside for him to go pick it up. It did take him a while and when he came back outside, I noticed he didn't open the folder the envelope the report card was in.

"You do know you can't know what grades you got if you don't open the envelope, right?" I asked.

"Again, I'd rather not," Holden said. "It's better not knowing."

"Okay, well, think of it this way," I said. "Once you open up the envelope and find out you passed all the classes, we will be able to focus solely on our wedding. No more school, no more homework, no more studying. Just you, me, and our future."

Holden hesitated before opening the envelope and pulling the report card out. He stared at it before looking at me. "I passed," he said. "I passed all my classes!"

I smiled and pulled him into a hug. "Congratulations, Holden. You deserve it."

"I can't believe I'm officially done with school," Holden said. "I don't have to worry about it ever again."

"See? I knew you were going to pass," I said. "So, how about we go out somewhere to celebrate? We can get a meal at The Gold Mine."

"Yes, nothing says celebration like eating at the restaurant we work at," Holden said.

"Hey, at least we get a discount," I said. "We do have to save our money anyway for the wedding."

Holden smiled. "I still can't believe it's just a matter of time before we get married. I can't wait."

"Neither can I," I said. "Seriously, you are the best thing that has ever happened to me and I can't wait to call you my husband."

       "Me too," Holden said.
