Alpha Haku was a member of the Valient Ula tribe, the first pack of werewolves in Hawaii. Their pack resided on a smaller island off of one of the main islands. It was an island that not many knew about, and to this day, still remains hidden.

His father and mother were higher up in the rankings of the tribe, but due to the tradition of the island, the elders were looked highly upon for their great wisdom. The pack did not believe in a set leader or Alpha.

They didn't believe they needed a leader until one day tension grew amongst the pack as some pack members had made the journey to a main island where another pack resided. They had established an Alpha, and the pack members who had witnessed the authority and power he had held grew greedy for that power.

Haku, at that time, was a couple years past his first shift, and he watched his eldest brother and several of the other young adult wolves become almost thirsty for a power like that amongst their pack.

Haku, unlike his brother, Ano, wasn't hungry for a leadership position. He much rather spend his days fishing and working around the island. He also spent much of his time with his grandfather and one of the elders, Akoni.

Akoni had told his parents to name their second son Haku, for he saw a vision where he would be a great leader someday.

As the tension grew amongst the pack members, Haku had came across a mysterious young woman. Her hair was golden and her eyes were a heavenly golden color to match. Haku instantly felt an attraction to her, feeling that it had to be his mate.

He became closer to the woman over a few weeks. He found out that she was in search for a new pack, and, since his pack was very welcoming, they accepted her almost instantly.

Her name was Keaka. Her name may seem beautiful, but in Hawaiian that meant person of shadows. The elders, especially Akoni, were weary of her presence, but once they saw her beautiful shining face, they decided that she was just given a dark name. They laughed at the irony of it since she was notorious for being the nicest she-wolf they've ever met, and, yet, her name meant shrouded in darkness.

One day, Ano and another pack member got in a bloody fight for power. If it wasn't for Haku interfering, both would have been dead. The pack decided that Haku and his 'mate' should be their leaders. Their Alpha and Luna.

For a couple months things were going wonderfully for everyone until an unexpected death occurred. The death of a young She-wolf. His mate wanted revenge on whomever killed her, and he blamed the 'Luna of darkness'; he blamed Luna Keaka.

Everyone brushed it off, knowing the man must be crazy. But then, it happened again. Another young and quite beautiful, she-wolf was murdered.

At this point, Haku didn't know what to do. He asked the elders for help, and they didn't know what to do either.

On a sunny day, after a few months of no other murders, one of the young she -wolves began to converse with Haku, merely asking innocent questions about her brother's fishing boat and such. What Haku didn't know was that Keaka watched it as he smiled and laughed with the young she-wolf, and she grew very furious.

She became so mad that "her" Haku would even smile at another woman, so she planned on killing her just as she had with the other two beautiful she-wolves.

Later that night, Keaka managed to lure the She-wolf out of her home with her special magical powers. Powers she had inherited from her mother who was a witch.

Once she had led the woman to a cliff where she would manipulate her to jump, The she-wolf snapped out of the daze just in time. She saw Keaka and immediately ran back to the pack's center, where she exclaimed that it was Keaka who used witchcraft to try and kill her.

The pack members ordered her to be punished. Haku, in order to appease the pack, agreed to a punishment.

Her punishment was ten whips from the silver laced whip. A whip that would no only hurt but cause immense searing of the skin since silver is poisonous to wolves.

After her punishment commenced, she had to rest for weeks due to the whipping. In that short time, Haku came across a woman who happened to be his true mate. Keaka has used witchcraft to make him believe they were mates.

With this he accepted the she-wolf named Kaipo; her name means 'darling'. And darling she was to everyone. She brought light and love back to the pack as she became the new Luna. She became pregnant just as quickly as she became Luna.

Once Keaka found out about it, she placed a curse on Haku's family, cursing any son born to the family for generations to come, would be possessed by a demon that would cause them to go ballistic if they were Alpha. She had left soon after, leaving the Luna and Alpha scared for their child.

Haku and Kaipo gave birth to a beautiful baby boy and named him Likeke, which means courageous ruler. That he was bound to be, until Haku passed away due to old age and Likeke took over as Alpha.

Once he had taken the role, his usual bright and happy demeanor changed, and he became cold and mean. He tried to cover this ugly side with a facade, but it only grew worse once he found his mate and Luna.

It got to the point where he was randomly attacking her and others whom he loves. He decided to step down and become second-in-command and let his cousin be the Alpha of the pack. Once he stepped from his position, Likeke was back to normal and lived the remainder of his life happily.

From then on, even since the pack moved to the mainland, no other instances of Haku's bloodline became possessed like Likeke had.

"Not until Maverick since he had to step up as Alpha after the death of Alek."

At this point, Duke listened in on the story, snuggling closer to me on the couch. Joy had told me the history of their pack which many believe to be just a mere story, but, unfortunately, it is very much accurate.

It is just Duke, Joy and I sitting in the living room. Vander and Ian had went to go check in on Maverick and try to calm him down. Apparently, Maverick had dashed deeper into the woods, so the men along with other warriors are scanning the forest for him.

"So... Maverick is a descendant of Haku?" I ask Joy. My mind is wheeling with more questions, but I decide I don't want to overwhelm her with them.

"Yes. His family has served as the Beta family for generations. Maverick technically has Alpha blood, but due to the curse, his family has just stayed being a Beta family."

I nod along to Joy's answer. Before I can ask another question, Duke bounces up from his spot beside me.

"So his great great great great great great great great great grandpa was Haku? That's awesome!!" He exclaims.

I guess I'm not the only one hearing this story for the first time.

Joy and I both look at each other a let out a laugh. The kid makes me smile even in the most serious or upsetting situations.

"Um Joy. Why doesn't Vander take over as Alpha then? Or someone else take over?"

Joy's small smile disappears. "We have suggested this to Maverick since we noticed his strange behavior when he took over the pack, but he thinks he can handle it. Plus, if someone else would take over...they'd have to fight him for the position. It's a tradition."

"But Likeke just dropped down from his position. Why can't he just do that?"

She gets up from her chair. Looking me straight in the eyes, she says, "ask him. Only he knows the answer to that."

With that, she walks into the kitchen, preparing dinner for the night.

Even though Duke keeps me occupied by having me play legos with him and multiple board games, my mind keeps reeling with unanswered questions.

Why wouldn't Maverick step down?

Would he if I asked him to?

What happened to Alek? And Millie ?

But the biggest question is, if he won't step down, can I save him?

By night, and we still have not heard any word from Vander or Ian, and Joy insists I stay the night in the packhouse. She also is forcing me to get some sleep as I have school tomorrow morning.

When I wake up in the morning, stretching my aching limbs, the smell of bacon and eggs fills my nose.

I get up from the couch and quickly change into some clothes Joy set aside for me, walking into the kitchen where Joy is busily bouncing around the kitchen preparing six plates of bacon and eggs.

Duke comes running down the stairs with his backpack slung on his back. He's wearing a bright smile as he greets us.

"Gooooooood morning Mommy! GOOOOOOOD MORNING ELORA!!" He plops down at the table, awaiting for his plate of breakfast.

"Good morning, Duke! Excited for school?" I ask, taking a seat next to him. "Also good morning, Joy."

Joy smiles at us as she places the plates piled with crispy bacon and scrambled eggs. "Good morning you two. Now hurry and eat, and then Ian said he'd take you both to school."

I giggle slightly as I feel as though I were at home and Joy is my mom. I mean, she is only a few years older than me, but she holds such a maternal quality to her, much like my mother, that I feel obliged to listen to her.

"Okay mommy! And yeah I'm excited for school! I get to see Rida!" Joy and I both give him a look as he mentions Rida.

I smirk slightly at his love-struck daze.

"Is Rida your girlfriend?" I ask teasingly, and he gives me a wide eyed look as a blush creeps over his pudgy cheeks.

"No no no no! Rida is my bestest friend. She's a human too! She's soooo nice!" He quickly exclaims, making Joy and I giggle at his flustered expression.

"Good. You can't date until-"

"I know. Until I'm in high school. But I'm not gonna until I find my mate." He quickly finishes his plate of food before getting up and dashing out the door yelling for me to follow him.

I laugh as I bring my dish to the sink, thanking Joy for breakfast.

I make my way outside where Ian and his car are waiting. Duke already is sitting in the back, buckled up and ready to go. I slide into the passenger's side as Ian gives me a quick smile before he driving off.

If Duke isn't in the car babbling constantly, the car ride would be one hell of an awkward ride.

Duke's school is first, so we drop him off. He dashed out of the car out to meet up, whom I presume is his friend, Rida. They hug each other before making their way into the school. I let out an 'aww' as I watch them.

Ian takes off towards the high school, in utter silence. Since I can't stand silence, I decide to speak up.

"So... um did you guys find Maverick? Is he okay?"

He nods and turns to look at me as he stops at a stoplight.

"Yeah. He's fine for now. He feels horrible with what he did to you. You know Maverick would never intentionally hurt you? He really cares about you."

The light turns green and he continues driving, turning away from me.

"Yeah I know, and I care about him."

He pulls up to my school, and I step out. He gives me a wave as he drives off. Sighing, I trudge into the building as a plan boils up in my mind. A plan that could possibly allow Maverick to still be Alpha and get rid of this curse once and for all.
