Rainy Days

I lightly bounced Maggie in my arms as morning sunlight came streaming in through the windows. I knew one thing, she certainly isn't a morning person.

Her little face was red with anger and tiny tears came sliding down her saddened cheeks. She woke Steve and I up this morning. Poor thing was crying so hard, and we couldn't figure out why she was crying so much. Steve needed to take a shower and then head off to Headquarters. He had business to take care of. So that left me to take of Maggie.

I held her close to my chest and continued to rock her back and forth. But she still would settle down.

Steve came out of the bathroom with a towel around his waist and began to stride towards the bedroom. But he paused a moment and poked his head out around the corner.

"She's still crying?" He asked.

"I don't know what's wrong with her. I tried everything. I tried feeding her, changed her diaper, and sang to her. Nothing seems to be working." I shake my head as Maggie screams again.

"I hate to tell you, but there's a thunderstorm moving in from the west. I don't think that would calm her down any." He turns and walks into the bedroom. I hear the door click shut.

Maggie whimpers in my arms. I shush her softly and bounce her again.

As I look out the window, I sigh. Rain drizzled down the windows. I watched as lightning flashed in the sky. I sighed as I knew thunder would be following it any second now. Then Maggie would flip out and there would be no hope.

Thunder boomed through the sky, erupting in my ears. I closed my eyes and prepared myself for Maggie's screams.

But suddenly, she pauses. Her tiny hands that were balled into fists, released and she stopped crying. I looked up at the sky in bewilderment, then back at Maggie, and back at the sky once more.

"How?" I ask myself.

I swipe the tears under Maggie's away from her face. She nuzzles close to my chest and looks up at me with her wild blue eyes. Fluffy blond hair lies flat against her head. She really does look just Steve. Hasn't shown signs of acting like him, but I have a feeling that will come later. Maggie looks up at me and grins. Then she looks to the window. She touches the glass with her little hand and looks with wide eyes.

"Do you like the rain baby girl?" I ask her.

She only stares out the window, oblivious to what I just said. She was so fascinated with the rain. And with the weather in general.

"Hmm." Steve mumbles.

I turn back to him and see him leaned against the wall. He was fully clothed now.

"What?"

"Rainy days make her calm." He raises an eyebrow. "That's strange."

"Maybe I should call Thor. Ask him if he'd like to move in for the next five years." I joke.

"We don't have any room." He replies.

I smile and look down at Maggie. Her eyes haven't moved at all. She's still watching the rain on the windows. The droplets glide down the window and crash into each other.

Steve's strong arms wrap around me and hold Maggie and I close. Steve kisses me tenderly on the temple and rubs my shoulders.

"I never got to thank you." He begins.

"For what?"

"For giving me the best gift in this world. A family." He pauses for a moment as I look up at him. "When I went under, I thought I was gone forever. That no one would find my body and bring it home. I was certain that I would never have a future like this."

"You don't have to worry about the past. Maggie and I are your future. Look to us and us alone." I speak.

Steve kisses me. He looks down at his daughter and how she watches the windows happily. He plants a tiny kiss on her forehead.

"Here." Steve holds out his arms. "I can take her. Go make yourself something to eat."

"I thought you needed to leave-"

"I can be late. Family is first priority." He replies and gently takes Maggie from my arms.

I head towards the kitchen as Steve begins to talk to Maggie. I can barely hear him since he's talking so softly. Whatever he's saying, Maggie must like it. I can hear her making noises from the kitchen.

Steve's voice grows softer and softer as time progresses. He gets so quiet that his voice becomes a whisper.

It warms my heart to see how much Steve loves Maggie. Poor little thing. She won't have a boyfriend until she's forty. Steve sure will be protective of her. But he means well.

With my breakfast finished, I needed to get back to Maggie. Steve was running late and didn't need to be any more late then he already was.

Steve had put Maggie to sleep and had taken her back to her bedroom.

I walk towards Maggie's room, when suddenly I stop. I hear someone talking.

No, not talking.

Someone is singing.

I glanced through the crack in the door and saw Steve. He was sitting in the rocking chair with Maggie in his arms. He was softly singing an old song from the thirties. I had never heard it before, but it was a sweet little melody.

He hummed along, rocking back and forth in the chair as Maggie lays against his chest.

I lean against the doorway listening closely as his humming suddenly stopped.

"How did I get so lucky to have a daughter like you?" He whispers. "My baby girl. My only baby girl." He speaks as my eyes begin to water.

"I'll protect you from anything and everything. I won't let anyone hurt you. And with that comes the rules. No boyfriend until you're twenty five. No wait, make it thirty."

I chuckle lightly.

"I show you how to count and tie your shoes. I'll teach you how to beat someone up. I'll teach you how to throw my shield. I'll show you the world, Maggie." He continues. "Stay this little forever."
