Brinley hadn't been in her tent long before she heard someone slip in behind her. Murphy shuffled uncomfortably, noting the tense set of her shoulders.

'Brin?'

'Yeah?'

Murphy hesitantly stepped closer, lowering himself down until he was sitting beside her on her makeshift bed.

'You okay?'

Brinley pursed her lips. 'I'll be fine.'

'You can talk to me you know.' Murphy spoke awkwardly after a brief moment of silence.

Brinley smiled gently at him. 'I know, there's just nothing to talk about.'

Murphy sighed. 'Earth sucks.'

Brinley laughed lightly. 'It's definitely what I thought it would be, that's for sure.'

'Why did Bellamy win?' Murphy asked after a moment.

'What?'

'You told Bellamy he'd won. What were you talking about?'

Brinley frowned, and her voice shook when she spoke. 'I killed Atom.'

Murphy sucked in a sharp breath. 'Jesus, Brin what –'

'It was a mercy kill. Bellamy couldn't do it, and now Octavia can't even look at me.'

'You didn't do anything wrong.' Murphy frowned.

Brinley stayed silent.

'You aren't like the rest of us. You and Octavia might be the most innocent out of everyone down here.'

Brinley scoffed. 'I'm hardly innocent.'

'You and I both know those guards had it coming. They deserved what they got.'

'Not everyone see's it that way.' Brinley muttered, picking at a loose thread on her shirtsleeve.

'That's because they don't know the truth.'

'Why'd you come in here? We both know that you don't like dealing with your emotions.' Brinley smirked at Murphy who rolled his eyes.

'I might have pissed off Bellamy after you left.'

Brinley groaned. 'Jesus Murphy, What did you do?'

'I may have insulted Octavia in front of him.' Murphy grimaced.

Brinley laid a hard punch on his arm. 'Ouch! What the hell?'

'Don't insult Octavia, especially not in front of Bellamy, or me. Why were you insulting her in the first place?'

Murphy mumbled under his breath.

'What?'

'I tried to kill Jasper.'

Brinley punched him again. 'You don't try to kill people either Murphy!'

'I wasn't actually going to kill him; I just wanted to scare him into shutting up. He was being obnoxiously loud.' Murphy confessed and Brinley sighed.

'You're a fucking idiot, you know that?'

'And you're a bitch, you know that?' Brinley glanced at him sharply but noticed the smirk on his face and she snickered.

'Screw you.'

'You wish.' He scoffed.

'You should get some rest.' Murphy murmured to her, throwing her a makeshift blanket.

'You should too. You look tired.' She commented.

'That's cause I am.' Murphy kicked off his shoes and stripped off his shirt before climbing into his own bed.

'Goodnight asshole.'

'Night doll face.'

*****

Brinley didn't sleep.

She lay in her bed, listening to Murphy's soft breathing all night. Gradually, it began to get lighter and Brinley knew it was almost sunrise.

Being careful not to wake up her sleeping friend, Brinley tip toed over him and walked quietly out into the biting breeze. The camp was deserted, all the other campers still resting peacefully in their tents. The campfire from the night before had burnt out, all that was left was the faintly glowing embers.

Brinley sighed, watching as the air left her mouth and became visible in front of her. It was getting colder every day and Brinley couldn't help but worry for what was to come.

Brinley was exhausted, but the cold breeze kept her alert and for that she was thankful.

Without her consciously realising it, Brinley's feet had taken her to the site of the graves they had dug for their fallen companions. Brinley could see the fresh mound of soil built up over one specifically. Guilt settled heavily in her stomach. Atom.

Brinley heard movement behind her and she spun around, cursing herself for forgetting her knife.

'Whoa! Relax!'

The boy behind her held his hands up in surrender, his eyes watching her carefully. Her shoulders relaxed and she let out a loud sigh.

'Sorry, It's Monty right?'

Monty smiled. 'Yeah, you're Brinley, right?' Brinley knew he was only being polite in asking who she was but she smiled kindly at him anyway.

'Yeah. What are you doing out here?'

Monty looked sheepish. 'I was going to find some food, roots, nuts and berries, that sort of thing.'

Brinley looked impressed. 'You know what to look for?'

Monty smirked. 'Yeah, I know what I'm doing. What about you, why are you out here?'

'Couldn't sleep.' Brinley shrugged.

Monty nodded. 'You could come with me, if you want? I can show you what to look for.' His question was hesitant but the smile he shot her was genuine.

'That'd actually be really helpful, thanks.'

Monty nodded and ushered her towards the direction he was headed.

'How's Jasper doing?' Brinley asked as the two walked.

Monty's expression changed into one tinged with relief. 'He's doing better. He woke up last night. He passed out again pretty much straight away, but Clarke says she thinks he's going to be okay.'

Brinley. 'Good. I'm glad. Hey listen, I'm sorry about Murphy doing what he did yesterday...' Brinley trailed off.

Monty sighed. 'You know about that?'

Brinley nodded. 'Yeah he told me. For what it's worth, he wouldn't have hurt Jasper. He just wanted to scare him.'

Monty frowned. 'And you believe him?'

'Yeah, I do. Murphy's a bit of an asshole but there's more to him than meets the eye. He isn't a bad person.'

Monty chose not to comment; instead he just nodded his head.

'If you want we can make it even?'

'What?'

'My idiot best friend tried to kill your best friend, so let's make it even. You can try to kill me, I'll give you a free shot.' Brinley held her arms open wide, grinning at the shocked expression on Monty's face.

Monty laughed quietly as he saw her smile. 'Thanks for the offer, but I think I'll pass.'

Monty stopped abruptly and Brinley stopped beside him.

'Okay, so what we're looking for are these.' Monty pulled out a neatly wrapped bundle of leaves, nuts and berries. 'If they look any different, if the colour is slightly off or the shape is wrong, don't touch them.' Monty warned.

''Aye aye captain.' She saluted Monty who snickered.

'You look over that way, I'll look a little further over.'

Brinley made her way to the area Monty had delegated and she began searching, mimicking the way Monty was crouching near tree bases and inbetween the long grass.

It wasn't long before she came across one of the types of leaves Monty had shown her and she carefully pulled a few free, before standing to move further over.

'Found something?' Monty called to her.

'I think so, I'll have to get you to –' Brinley walked backwards as she spoke, not watching where her feet were going. She lost her footing, squealing slightly as she fell.

'Brinley? You okay?' Monty called from the top of the small slope as Brinley stood up again. 'Yeah, yeah I'm-' Her words cut off as she looked down and a sharp scream erupted from her mouth.

'Brinley?' Monty's voice was panicked as he made his way down to where she was standing, frozen.

Wells.

Brinley's knees gave out as she settled down beside him; his glazed over eyes and the blood staining his clothes told her that he was already long gone. Her hands shook as she gently pushed his eyes closed. He looked as though he was sleeping but Brinley knew he wasn't. Bile rose in her throat as tears filled her eyes.

'Brinley – oh shit.' Monty covered his mouth in shock.

'He's dead.' Brinley's voice broke, confirming Monty's suspicions.

'Do you want to go and get-'

'I'm staying here.'

'Will you – '

'I'll be fine.' Brinley forced her voice not to shake.

'I'll be right back. Take this.' Monty handed her his knife. 'Stay there.'

Brinley wasn't sure she could move if she tried.

She stared at Wells' motionless form, wishing that she'd fixed things with him sooner. She'd been such a bitch to him, even though he hadn't directly done anything to her. Her heart hurt and her stomach turned. She could hear footsteps getting closer but she ignored them. At that moment she didn't care if the grounders were coming for her, all she cared about was her lost friend in front of her.

'I'm so sorry, Wells, I'm so sorry.' She whispered.

'Son of a bitch.'

Brinley looked up through her damp lashes at the familiar words she'd heard only yesterday, her eyes meeting Bellamy's own shocked ones as Monty appeared behind him. Bellamy's hair was messy and she guessed Monty had woken him up.

Brinley squeezed her eyes shut, pushing her tears away. She saw Monty lean down, covering Wells' face with a jacket. It was so similar to the way Atom had been covered that Brinley gagged, forcing her hand across he mouth as she willed herself to calm down, to not appear weak in front of the two males.

There was movement beside her and it took Brinley a moment to realise that Bellamy had made his way to her, crouching down beside her. He placed a gentle hand on her shoulder, watching her carefully.

'Come on, let's get you back to camp.'

Brinley jerked away from his touch as though he had shocked her. 'No. We can't leave him here.'

'We won't. You don't need to see this.'

'Someone has to tell Clarke.' Brinley whispered in horrified realisation.

'You don't have to worry about that right now, alright?' Bellamy's voice was firm.

'Then what am I supposed to worry about? How one of my oldest friends has been murdered by god knows what? Or am I supposed to worry that this is a warning that we're vulnerable to an attack? That we could all end up like him!' Brinley pointed at Wells and Bellamy was surprised to see the fire in her eyes as she glared up at him.

'I'll figure it out, alright? Look, Sterling and John are coming to watch Wells' body to make sure no one else has to see this, okay.'

'We have to bury him.'

'I know, and we will. But as you said, someone has to tell Clarke and it needs to be done sooner rather than later.'

Brinley nodded at Bellamy, who relaxed at her compliance.

Brinley felt a hand on her arm and looked up to find Monty smiling sympathetically at her. He squeezed her arm as he fell into step beside her.

Brinley walked back towards camp, Bellamy on her right and Monty on her left. Brinley noticed that a handful of people were resetting the fire as she made her way to the drop ship. Bellamy tugged her backwards.

'Where are you going?'

'I'm going to get Clarke.'

'I don't think – '

'Don't worry, I won't look at Octavia.' Brinley sneered, pulling her arm out of his grip. Bellamy let out a sigh and Monty looked at him curiously. Bellamy shook his head in response and followed Brinley into the drop ship, Monty behind him.

Brinley stepped around the few sleeping bodies as she made her way over to the familiar blonde who was sleeping peacefully.

Bellamy noticed someone moving near Jasper and his eyes were instantly drawn to his sister, who was blinking sleep out of her eyes rapidly. 'Bell?' She yawned, her eyes finding Brinley and quickly her expression closed off.

Monty made his way to Jasper, thankful for the first time that his friends' injuries had kept the rest of the 100 away from the bottom level of the drop ship. The bottom level usually housed Finn, Jasper, Clarke, Wells, himself and on occasion, Octavia. He had a feeling the following few minutes were not going to be pleasant.

'Wha – Brinley?' Clarke blinked in surprise, sitting up as she noticed Brinley, with Bellamy behind her.

'Hey.' Brinley said softly.

'What's going on? Is Jasper – '

'Jasper's fine. Clarke, we gotta talk.'

'Now? Can't it wait.' Clarke yawned as she stood up, Octavia copying her motions as she made her way to her brother.

'What's going on, Bell?' She whispered, forgetting momentarily that she was still livid with him.

Bellamy opened his mouth to speak but Brinley spoke before he could.

'It can't wait Clarke.'

'Why are you and Bellamy even in here? Where's Wells?' Clarke noted her missing friend and Brinley gulped.

'Clarke...'

Clarke knew Brinley well enough to hear the undertone of sadness in her voice. 'Brinley, where's Wells?'

'He's outside the perimeter of the camp.' Brinley answered honestly.

Clarke breathed out a sigh of relief. 'I'm going to get him.'

Brinley stopped her. 'Clarke... Wells is... Wells is dead.'

Clarke's face dropped. 'What?'

'She found him out past the graves.' Bellamy confirmed.

'What... how?'

By now both Finn and Jasper were awake, dazed and disoriented.

'What's going on?' Finn slurred.

'Wells is dead.' Clarke gasped, her words successfully waking Finn up with a start.

'No, he can't be...' Clarke shook her head, whispering to herself quietly.

'Clarke...' Brinley started before Clarke's icy gaze met her own.

'Did you do it?' Clarke's voice was low and deadly.

'What?' Brinley gasped, hurt evident in her voice.

Beside Octavia, Bellamy tensed, preparing for the worst.

'Did you kill Wells?' Clarke's hands tensed into fists.

'Did I – How dare you!' Brinley gasped out.

'It looks like a grounder attack. No one is to blame here. ' Bellamy cut in firmly.

'How could you even...?' Brinley's own hands curled into fists and Bellamy eyed the girl warily.

'Well it wouldn't be the first time you killed someone, would it? What's your total now, huh? Five guards, plus Atom... so six? Correct me if I'm wrong.' Clarke sneered.

Deep down Brinley knew that Clarke was trying to hide her pain, her anguish at finding out Wells was dead and she was projecting her feelings onto the nearest person to make herself feel better, and that person happened to be Brinley this time. That didn't stop Brinley from feeling the rage bubble up inside her.

Bellamy glanced at his sister, watching as she went white as Clarke revealed how many people Brinley had singlehandedly killed. Guilt twisted his stomach for he knew that if it weren't for him, Octavia wouldn't know about the girl's past crimes, and they would still be speaking.

'How dare you!' Brinley screeched as she lunged at Clarke, scratching her nails down Clarke's face, her hands going for Clarke's throat as if to throttle her. Finn was a second too late to reach Clarke who was trying to fight off her former friend, though she knew she deserved it for saying such awful things to the dark haired girl.

Octavia watched in disbelief as beside her, Bellamy sprung into action, the early morning clearly not dulling his senses like the others. His arms wrapped around Brinley's waist, dragging her forcefully away from the blonde who was holding her throat, a look of shock frozen on her face.

'You have no idea what I went through! You were supposed to be my friend Clarke Griffin, but you never stopped to ask why! You're so fucking selfish – Let me go asshole!' Brinley struggled against Bellamy's hold.

Octavia, Monty, Finn and Jasper watched on, slack jawed. Finn reached up to check Clarke's injuries but Clarke recoiled, brushing him off.

'You need to calm down sweetheart.' Bellamy warned, tightening his hold again as Brinley dug her nails into his skin, causing small bursts of pain.

'You need to let me go.' She hissed.

Bellamy could tell she wasn't going to give up as she hissed obscenities at Clarke who stared at her, a mixture of anger and guilt in her expression. Clarke knew Brinley was right; she was selfish.

Brinley stopped struggling slightly out of shock as Bellamy pushed her against the farthest wall of the drop ship. He placed his hands on either side of her head, effectively pinning her to the cool metal, Brinley continued to try to shake him off, her entire body shaking with anger.

'Hey – Hey, I know you didn't do it.' Bellamy's words were quiet, but the icy silence between the others made it easy for them to hear his words. Brinley stared up at him.

'I know you didn't kill Wells, okay. I believe you.' Bellamy's expression held nothing but sincerity.

As if his words flipped a switch, Brinley's shoulders relaxed and she looked up at him. The sheer amount of grief and sadness in her eyes made his breath catch. But as soon as he had seen it, it was gone like shutters closing over a window.

'Wanna let me go now?' She asked, considerably calmer than before, her voice like ice.

Bellamy eyed her warily, backing away from her slowly, becoming acutely aware of how close they were to each other.

'Where are you going, Brin?' Monty called, slightly disgusted at Clarke's accusations. She hadn't seen the look on Brinley's face as she discovered Wells, but he had and he knew then that Brinley wasn't as unbreakable as she pretended to be.

She turned, ignoring all the other faces in the room as she spoke to the only person aside from Bellamy who could look her directly in the eye. 'To wake up Murphy, I have a grave to dig and a friend to bury.'

As Brinley left after shooting a scathing look at her, Clarke's legs gave out and she dissolved into quiet sobs.

Bellamy heard the hatch above him squeak and he shot a glare up to the curious faces that appeared.

'Shut it. Now.'

*****

'Murphy?'

'What?' Murphy groaned as he rolled onto his back, squinting up at her. 'It's too early.'

'Can you come with me please?'

Murphy smirked, a dirty comment on the tip of his tongue before he noticed her serious expression. 'What happened?' Without a second thought Murphy threw on his shirt, pulling on his boots and jacket.

'I went for a walk this morning with Monty-'

'The Asian kid?'

'Monty.' She corrected. 'I – uh I found Wells.'

There was a second of silence before Murphy responded. 'I'm not following, princess.' Murphy frowned.

'I found Wells – I found his body.' Brinley breathed out.

Murphy sucked in a sharp breath. 'Shit.'

'I have to – I need to dig a grave for him. He's been lying there for god knows how long.' Brinley massaged her forehead, feeling a headache coming on.

'Yeah, okay. We can do that.' Murphy didn't like Wells, he'd even go as far to say he hated the guy, but Brinley had cared about him so he chose not to voice the nasty comment that was stirring in his brain.

'Hey Murphy?'

'Yeah?' He frowned at Brinley's tone.

'Don't go anywhere, okay? I uh, I can't lose you too. You're all I have left.'

Murphy smirked, resting his arm around her shoulders as they exited the tent. 'Don't worry doll face, I'm not going anywhere.'
