Shadowpaw's POV

Moonrise

Shadowpaw stared emotionlessly at the center of the clearing as the three elders Lilypool, Gorgewhisker and Flinttail carried Pineflower's lifeless body out to the clearing. She didn't feel a single ounce of remorse. If she hadn't gone to warn MountainClan, the whole clan would've been slaughtered.

Only when Wavepaw, her best friend, knelt down next to her mother to share tongues with her one last time, did she feel any regret. But only a little.

Shadowpaw stepped out from the corner of the camp and made her head and whiskers droop, and her tail to drag along the ground. She padded towards Pineflower, ears plastered to her head, looking the picture of grief. She settled next to Wavepaw to pay her 'respects', still unfeeling.

I'm sorry, Shadowpaw told Pineflower's dead body. I still don't feel grief.

Then Shadowpaw rose to her paws and let Adderstrike take her place, heading back to the apprentices' den. As she entered, she was in for a surprise.

"Here,"Tigerpaw meowed, dropping a pike by her paws. "You haven't eaten since the battle."

Shadowpaw blinked at him, for a loss of words for once. How did he notice? She was suddenly aware of a hollow feeling her her stomach.

"Thank you,"she responded quietly. As the dark brown tom exited, she couldn't help but wonder why he would help her, of all cats.

------------------------------------

Shadowpaw woke to the familiar surroundings of the Dark Forest. She lifted her muzzle, listening to the usual screams to pain when somebody clouted her from behind.

"Ouch!"Shadowpaw screeched in agony, whirling around and hurling herself onto her attacker in a rage. The cat and her tumbled to the ground in a heap before the cat pulled away from her. "That's enough!"a voice yowled.

"Shadeheart?"Shadowpaw stumbled back in confusion. "You attacked me?"

"Of course I did, you idiot furball!" the black she-cat snapped. "Do you think I haven't noticed?"

  "Noticed what?"Shadowpaw gasped. "You're insane!"

"No, you're the one who's insane,"Shadeheart spat back. "You and that Tigerpaw have been getting close lately, haven't you?"

Shadowpaw's knee-jerk reaction was to deny it immediately, but she decided to tell the truth. "So what if we have?" she fired to her mentor, fluffing out her fur. "You can't stop us!"

"HE WILL DISTRACT YOU FROM YOUR DESTINY!" Shadeheart yowled. "REMEMBER YOUR PROMISE TO ME!"

"Yes, I remember!"she screamed back. "You said you'd help me forever! How is you attacking me helping?Tell me!"

Shadeheart suddenly calmed down, which was even eerier than her yelling. "Of course," she purred, and Shadowpaw eyed her suspiciously. "Of course you can be with Tigerpaw. He is a fine apprentice, isn't he? Minnowpaw likes him, you know. So does Crystalpaw."

Shadowpaw laughed in her face. Shadeheart shrugged. "You'll believe me soon," she purred. "But you're too young to be thinking about mates! You're what, nine moons only. Tigerpaw is eleven moons!"

"You're right,"Shadowpaw admitted. Shadeheart laughed. "Of course! Now, of course I can allow you to be mates with Tigerpaw, if you accomplish three things."

"Name them,"Shadowpaw challenged. "Firstly, you've got to train every night," Shadeheart listed. "Second, you've got to become a Dark Forest warrior before you can become mates with Tigerpaw. That'll seal the prophecy. Thirdly... This is the most important..."

Shadeheart leaned forwards, eyes gleaming dangerously. "I need you to kill somebody."

  Shadowpaw glared back. "Never."

"You do want to become one of our warriors, right?" Shadeheart snarled. "Unless you're a coward."

"I'm no coward," Shadowpaw snapped. "Tell me who I have to kill."

"This is a minor task,"Shadeheart smirked. "Ripplestar currently has three lives left. He lost one right after the battle. I want you to kill all his lives until he has one left."

Shadowpaw took a deep breath. This decision would change her life. She could practically see StarClan on one path-the way to safety- but on the other path, of the Dark Forest, was the way to glory. Yes, risky, but if she succeeded to venture to the end, fame and power would be hers. Nobody else's.

Shadowpaw squared her shoulders and lifted her head proudly.

  "I'll do it."

----------------------------------

Shadowpaw woke up in the morning, in the light of early dawn. She sat up and began grooming herself, as she began wondering how to kill Ripplestar.

"Let all cats old enough to hunt and swim join here beneath the HighBranch."

Ripplestar's voice, robbed of all its energy, caused Shadowpaw to prick her ears. The other apprentices began to rouse and Shadowpaw went out first, curious to what the leader might say.

"Yesterday was a tragic day to LakeClan,"Ripplestar announced. "But we shall not perish. That was what MountainClan wanted. We will not perish! The battle was lost- but the war has not been won. This time, victory is well and truly ours. We are strong!"

Cheers rang throughout the camp, and every LakeClan cat looked up with new hope in their eyes. They raced to Wildsky with light shining in their eyes, where she stood announcing patrols.

"We need enforced dawn patrols on MountainClan,"Wildsky said confidently. "And we need more cats grouped into one. Lightwhisper, take Tigerpaw, Sandfrost, Lightningblaze, Grassflame,"she called, selecting the least injured cats. You'll patrol MountainClan right now. Tigerpaw, your new mentor will be assigned at sundown."

Lightwhisper nodded and she and her patrol headed out of camp. WIldsky turned back to the cats. "Brackenstorm and Aderstrike, take Wavepaw and go hunting. Get her mind off Pineflower," she mouthed, and the two toms nodded seriously.

"I'll lead another patrol,"Wildsky said. "To patrol the SeaClan border. Birchwave, you're coming with me. You as well, Shadowpaw. Come on."

Shadowpaw shrugged and followed Wildsky and Birchwave out of camp.

On the way to the beach, where the border was, Shadowpaw eavesdropped onto Birchwave and Wildsky's conversation. "Honestly, I feel really, really sorry for Cedarpelt and Wavepaw," Birchwave muttered. "Yeah,"Wildsky responded. "Ripplestar's going to be out for MountainClan's blood. He thinks we have a spy in the LakeClan camp!"

  "WHAT???"

  "Shh!"

The two warriors glanced at Shadowpaw behind them and back towards their destination. Abruptly, Shadowpaw spotted a dark red flash and the edge of her vision, and she turned her head to look at it.

What she saw made her eyes widen.

Now she knew how to kill Ripplestar.

  With deathberries.

OOH trouble is ahead for LakeClan... Shadowpaw has figured out how to kill one of Ripplestar's lives...
