Greencough seems harmless when it's actively told about, in the present and not given to a kit.

However, between chapters and timeskips, greencough becomes deadly and actually kills cats.

* This is more of an issue with the canon books, but also applicable. It's a trope more for thinning out a large crowd. You can't give everyone a super tragic onscreen death (especially in shorter stories).
