The road to recovery was rough. Redclaw sadly didn't pull through, he died shortly after receiving the herbs. "It was his time." Stoneteller told a grieving Wolfwhisper. The rest of the clan were recovering, but everyone was underfed and looked ghastly. Ragged, dirty fur. The camp was a disgusting mess of crow-food and sick. The moss in the nests hadn't been changed for ages and were also dirty and dried up. But slowly, gradually the cats began getting better. Frostshine started helping Stoneteller give out packets of leaves to those who needed it. Willowkit and Rosekit were reunited to many squeaks of delight. And best of all, Stormstar leaping up onto the High Ledge and announcing that he would take a patrol of cats to help the other clans. It took over a moon to properly get the camp back together. Finally, the dens were clean, the fresh-kill pile full and the camp alive with cats. The tribe had settled by the river, before the clans decided what to do with the tribe.
"May all the cats old enough to catch their own prey gather beneath the High Ledge for a clan meeting!" Stormstar yowled over the camp. Cats began milling out into the camp, some still bearing marks of the recent sickness that had plagued the cats. But everyone looked happy.
"I thought I would hold a very special ceremony for a cat, whom without we would all have died." Stormstar mewed, gaze sweeping the camp. "Featherpaw, I know this is long overdue, please come forward."
Excitement tingling her paws Featherpaw moved forward to Stormstar.
"Flamestripe, are you satisfied Featherpaw is ready to become a warrior?"
"She has been for ages." Flamestripe meowed, gazing warmly down onto Featherpaw.
Stormstar turned his gaze upon Featherpaw, who suddenly felt very small. He was big, strong and appeared to tower over her. She stretched up, raising her head. She would not be cowering during her warrior ceremony. "Featherpaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code, to protect and defend your clan, even at the cost of your life?"
Featherpaw took a deep breath. This was it. "I do." She meowed and her mew didn't quiver at all.
"Then, by the power of StarClan I give you your warrior name. Featherpaw, from this moment on you shall be known as Featherdawn, to honor the way you came and saved the clan from this dark time like the sun dawns on the night. StarClan honors your loyalty and intelligence and welcome you as a full member of OakClan." Stormstar placed his head on Featherdawn's head and she licked his shoulder respectfully. There had been a slight murmur in the crowd as Stormstar said the word loyalty, some seemed to remember the time she had spent with RockClan. But the Wolfwhisper's voice rose over the others. "Featherdawn! Featherdawn!" And soon the whole clan had joined it. Featherdawn raised her head, bathing in the wonderful moment.
Ashbreeze trottd up to her as she leaped from the ledge. "So, Featherdawn ey?" He purred.
Featherdawn shifted her paws uncomfortably. She had barely had time to talk to Ashbreeze since she had come back. "Yeah." She shrugged, not meeting his gaze.
"What's up?" Ashbreeze's usual caring blue gaze watched her uncertainly. "Are you ok?"
"Yeah yeah. I'm fine." Featherdawn turned away sheepishly, feeling terrible.
"Featherdawn?" Ashbreeze stepped forward and nuzzled her ear.
She flinched away, feeling even worse. "Look, umm, I have to go." She mewed, and left him looking hurt and confused.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
That night Featherdawn sat looking out over the dark forest. Her thoughts were swirling. Loyalty and intelligence. Those were the words he had picked and Featherdawn wished she knew could live up to it. But if it came to it, a matter between her clan and Ravenpaw, would she really put her clan first? She knew it would be different now, they were home and from different clans. But she couldn't be without him. It was more that just love. It was as though he was her second part. She felt like she would never be properly happy, or complete without him in her life. Well they would have to meet again according to the prophecy, there was still time to take that decision. She could still meet him. Glancing up at the star strewn sky she saw the moon, bright and almost full. It had to be a gathering tomorrow, if the clans could come. The sickness had taken its toll on all of the clans, and the death count was high. Then, a small voice sounded behind Featherdawn making her jump out of her pelt in fright. "Hello." Willowkit had silently padded up behind Featherdawn and was looking at her with serious, amber eyes. Even though she was just a kit, she looked much, wiser somehow than an ordinary kit. "Hey." Featherdawn replied, forgetting that you weren't meant to talk during your vigil. Willowkit sat down next to Featherdawn. Her tortoiseshell pelt was sleek and almost shone in the moonlight. "Something bad is coming isn't it?" Willowkit mewed, looking up at Featherdawn with big round eyes.
"I'm afraid so." Featherdawn replied.
"But, what will happen to us?"
"I'm not sure Willowkit. But the clans are strong, we will survive this."
"Are we all going to die?"
"No." Said Featherdawn firmly. "We will survive. You'll see."
Willowkit leaned against Featherdawn, who felt suddenly tenderness and a desperate desire to protect this little kit from all harm. She wrapped her fluffy white tail around Willowkit's small body and sighed. Willowkit fell asleep, curling up in Featherdawn's tail. Featherdawn sat till dawn, watching over both the camp, and the tiny kit. The sun rose steadily and Flamestripe arrived to dismiss her. He leaned close and whispered "I am so proud of you Featherdawn. Now go get some sleep."
She stood, stretching her stiff muscles. "You were an amazing mentor." She mewed, nudging Willowkit awake and escorting her to the nursery before going to the warriors den to sleep. There she found Wolfwhisper, laying awake and peering through the branches that made up the warriors den. He had been watching her vigil, making sure she was ok. Love swelled in her heart as their eyes met. "It's my job to look after you Featherdawn." Wolfwhisper mewed.
"You can't look after me forever." She whispered, slinking over to him.
"I know." He sighed closing his eyes. "But I can try."
Realized that I (unsmartly) named Ashbreeze Ashbreeze, and that he also got rejected like Ashfur. Oops...But this isn't the exact same I promise!
I am so sorry it's been so long since I updated this! But hope you enjoyed anyways.
