Sneak Peek - Chasing Jupiter

Hello everyone! And welcome to the Wattpad Block Party. Thanks for dropping by my post; I hope you guys are in the mood for some sneak peeks.

So for those who maybe aren't familiar with me, my name is Rachel. I go by knightsrachel here on the interweb, and I've been around on Wattpad for seven years.

(And yes, that does make me a Wattpad dinosaur.)

I'm so incredibly excited to be participating in ANOTHER Block Party. Massive thank you to Kelly for putting this huge project together and for inviting me yet again. (Even though I can never seem to submit anything on time. Love you Kelly.)

Let's get to the fun stuff.

Some of you may know that a year ago I was published in an anthology, along with some other amazing Wattpad authors, called Snow. In that anthology, I published a short story called Chasing Jupiter.

Well I'm happy to announce that Chasing Jupiter has undergone some renovations (thanks to the amazing @nonfictionalex) and will be coming to Wattpad in either late 2018 or early 2019.

And y'all are the first people to peep a sneak at the new version.

Quick recap of the story for those who didn't read it in Snow:

Amy Moore has worked in the music industry for several years but has never dealt with a band like Chasing Jupiter. Within three of years of managing four boys, she has a platinum-selling, two-time Grammy nominated band on her hands. Their future ought to have been set, except for the fact that the four boys can hardly stand the sight of one another.

After a performance disaster, Light Shine Records threatens to end the band's contract, but after a little persuasion from Amy, they agree to give the band two weeks to redeem themselves. Now all the band has to do is prove they deserve to keep their contracts.

Amy must repair the broken relationships between the boys or risk losing them forever.

Easy, right?

Now let's meet our star, Amy Moore.

And now it's time to meet my boys through the eyes of Amy Moore.

Chapter 1

Chaos.

The only word I could use to describe the scene unfolding around me was complete and utter chaos.

"Amy Moore?" a voice called out.

I turned to see a backstage worker, dressed in all-black, striding toward me, a clipboard in hand.

"Yes?" I asked, my voice coming out soft.

"Manager of..." She paused as she flipped through the papers on her clipboard. "You're the manager of Chasing Jupiter?"

I nodded.

"Where are they?"

Good question.

"They're due to go onstage in seven minutes," she continued. "And they haven't even shown up to their mic fittings."

I know.

"I'm, um..."

For the first time in my career, I was at a loss for words.

"Amy?" the backstage worker snapped. "The band."

I rolled back my shoulders, taking in a deep breath.

I was Amy fucking Moore. And I wasn't going to let this stop me. "I'll have them ready in five."

"They have to be onstage in-"

"Stall for time," I ordered. "I'll have them ready in five."

I left her standing in the hallway as I strode into the boys' dressing room. I knew at least two of the boys were in here, and the rest could be sorted out.

I was sure of it.

Felix was sitting on one of the couches, his head in his hands.

"Get up," I said.

He glanced up at me, his cheeks tear-stained. "What?"

"We have a show to do. Get up and get dressed."

He let out a humorless laugh. "Right, Amy."

"Do I sound like I'm joking?"

"With what band?"

I turned toward the boys' security guard, Klaus. "Find Brandon."

"I've searched the entire-"

"Search again," I ordered. "I want him here in three minutes."

Klaus scurried out of the room, and I turned back to face Felix.

"Get dressed," I repeated. "Where's Andrew?"

"Gone."

I felt like I'd taken a blow to the chest. "What do you mean gone?"

"He left," Felix said. "Sometime during my fight with Logan and Brandon's disappearance."

I can handle this. "Andrew's part will just have to be on a soundtrack," I said.

I'd ream him for this later. If I still had a career, that is.

"Where's Logan?" I asked.

Felix let out a humorless laugh. "What part of gone do you not understand, Amy?"

Logan had just been here. "You guys have been arguing for an hour," I reminded him. "He couldn't have just disappeared."

Felix shrugged, but I could tell there was more to the story.

There was always more to the story with these boys.

I took in a deep breath, letting it out slowly. This could not be happening.

I couldn't send the boys onstage without their lead guitarist and the drummer. There was only so much I could do with a soundtrack before the audience would riot.

I was just going to have to face the music on this one.

"Pack your things," I said to Felix. "I'll locate Klaus. We're going out the back."

"We're leaving?" Felix asked. "We're the main act at the VMA's. We can't just walk out."

We didn't have a choice. "I'll take care of things here," I said. "Klaus will take you boys back to the hotel."

"Boys?" Felix asked.

"Brandon is here somewhere," I reminded him. "He's just..."

"Missing," Felix filled in. "He's missing for the most important set of our career."

I had to handle this situation, and I had to do it quickly and efficiently.

"Pack your things," I repeated to Felix. "I'm going to go and pull our bid from the show."

Felix began to hyperventilate, his eyes widening. "We'll lose our contracts!" He rose to his feet, vigorously shaking his head. "We'll lose everything."

I laid my hand on his shoulder. "Have I always taken care of things?"

He offered up a small nod, distress evident on his face. "But, Amy-"

"I'll take care of this," I said. "You just pull yourself together."

I left him in the dressing room, and I felt my confidence deflate.

I had no idea how the hell I was going to do this.

"Amy?" Klaus asked behind me.

I turned to face him. "Where is Brandon?"

He cleared his throat. "Well... I found him."

"And?"

I could see the head producer of the VMA's storming toward me in my peripheral vision. She was yelling something, but admist the makeup artists and agents scurrying around, it was hard for me to hear.

"Get him out of here," I said to Klaus, my voice low. "Before shit hits the fan."

"But, Amy-"

I turned to face the head producer of the VMA's as she came up next to me.

"Amy Moore," she deadpanned, her eyes boring into mine.

"That's me."

"Where is my band?" she demanded in an icy voice. "I have a vacant slot to fill in 90 seconds. And I'll be damned if your boys don't show up on my stage."

"I'm sorry," I said, my voice coming out steady. "We're going to have to pull our bid from the show."

Faking professionalism had gotten me this far.

"I have less than 90 seconds before I go live again," she said, her voice dropping. "And you're telling me I'm going live with an empty stage?"

"There were some unforeseen complications," I said. "We'll have to deal with this internally."

There was a crash in the room next to us.

"Amy," Klaus said, his voice rising a bit in volume.

I held my hand up toward him. I couldn't deal with another situation.

"If I go live to an empty stage, that is on your head," the producer said. "Your career."

"I understand, but-"

The door next to us clicked open, and Brandon stumbled out.

He was wearing his boxers, his clothes dangling from his hand. And from my position in the hallway, I could see the brunette from the opening act standing behind him, only dressed in her undergarments as well.

"Sorry to interrupt," Brandon said. "Carry on."

"You're done," the producer hissed. She turned toward her assistant. "Send Kings United out for another set. And I want Kelsey Lewinsky on the line in the next thirty seconds."

Kelsey Lewinksy, the CEO of Light Shine Records.

The recording company that held all of our contracts.

"I tried telling you, Amy," Klaus said.

I slowly turned to face Brandon, who was standing behind Klaus. He'd managed to pull his jeans on, still shirtless.

"Get to the car," I ordered.

"Amy-" Brandon started.

I held up my hand. "Don't speak."

He glanced toward Klaus. "What's her deal?"

I tried to regulate my breathing as the urge to wring his neck grew stronger by the passing second.

"Get the boys' driver on the phone," I said to Klaus. "I want Logan and Andrew located immediately."

Klaus nodded. "Yes, ma'am."

"And I want the boys in their respective rooms," I said. "Social media blackout."

"Understood, ma'am."

I'd gotten the position as the band manager for Chasing Jupiter at the age of 23, which was unheard of in the industry. But I'd gotten there through keeping a calm and collected outward appearance and handling high-stress situations with composure.

But as of now, I could see my career crumbling around me.

"Clothes," I said to Brandon, my voice clipped. "Now."

He hastily pulled on a shirt as I guided him out of the backdoor, Klaus ordering the boys' driver to pull around.

"What's going on?" Brandon asked, as I all but shoved him into the car.

I slammed the door shut, turning to face Klaus.

"We'll get this sorted, Amy," Klaus said.

But I could tell he didn't believe it any more than I did.
