Let's Draw WARRIORS! - Facial Expressions

Hi everyone! I'm back again with more tips, this time on how to draw cats' facial expressions.

Firstly, I wanted to start off saying that this particular tutorial mainly applies to those who draw cartoonishly (shh I know it's not a word). Thankfully, that's how most of the fandom draws Warriors cats, because drawing realisticly is hard, amiright?

As you can see above, it's a LOT easier to show cats' emotions when you personify them rather than draw them realistically, if that makes any sense. 'Cause let's be honest here, cats in real life usually look pretty bored and stoic most of the time.

One thing to remember when drawing faces is that eyebrows and ears are the key to portraying emotions when it comes to cartoon felines. Below, you can see how I copy-pasted three of the same cat, but gave them each different eyebrows. This huge range of emotions can be accomplished even with small lines, for those of you who don't give your cats big, fluffy eyebrows.

Above, you can also observe how fur texture can make a difference between angry cats and calm cats. And while I didn't show it, this technique can apply to other things, such as whiskers. When drawing a sad kitty, I tend to make their whiskers droop, along with the ears.

Sometimes I don't draw whiskers, but I can still manage to portray how a cat is feeling using other techniques like changing the shape of the cat's eyes and mouth. Below is a sketch that I used for Please Help Hemlockpaw when drawing the kit's mother in the latest chapter. It should seem as if she's looking down on you, which can be accomplished by making the eyes tilt inwards and placing the pupils near the bottom.

Shading can also really help emphasize what a cat is feeling! Now, please excuse my crappy, unrefined art and notice how I shaded the mother's features. The light source is below her face, casting shadows above her "cheeks" and lighting the area above her eyes. Also, don't do what I did, which was enlarging the sketch and then adding details. This results in a difference in quality (the lineart being fuzzy and the details being too sharp), which aS YOU CAN SEE LOOKS VERY TERRIBLE-

Anyway, remember these tips the next time you draw Warriors cats art and I guarantee it'll work for you. That's all folks! I hope this helped!
