He Comes

Ganondorf sat upon the throne of Hyrule, Sword of the Sages on his lap, unconscious Princess floating above him, head in hands. Waiting. He'd answer the call of fate soon enough. He slipped the sword out of it's sheath, scoffed at it, and slid it back again. Yes... He'd come soon. No hero could resist a chance to do good. Especially not this one, descended from the legendary Hero of Time. A scowl played on the King of Evil's lips as he recalled his agonising defeat at the hands of a man-child who played with fairies. Yes, he could just tell that this time would be different. That insufferable fool Zant had failed to stop him, King Bulblin had switched sides, all the Fused Shadows belonged to his tiny, ugly imp, but he wasn't going to let any of that stop him. Indeed, this was the time that he would succeed. At any cost. A slow laugh escaped him, filling the throne room with haunting echoes. At any cost.

The Hero of Twilight galloped across Hyrule Field, thinking about the impending battle. He knew he had half of the kingdom on his side, and that would definitely help things along. In their last fight, the Hero's Shade called him 'son' and with that blessing holding him up, he felt ready to take on anything anyone threw at him. Even Ganon would be easier than he thought. Midna poked her head out of his shadow, looked around, and gasped, pupils thinning like Link's struggling sanity. "Look! The castle!" He glanced up, and saw the storm swirling around the castle spires. Broken, jagged thoughts speared his mind, and he rubbed his temples, feeling the first stages of a migraine. One hand steering his steed, other soothing his pounding head, he didn't hear Midna's screech of "Watch out!!" Not until it was too late. Too late for him to stop. Too late.

On the ground, Link lay, a fresh bruise blossoming on his hip. He thought he may have chipped the bone. He cast his vision to Epona, who was bucking and rearing in panic, eyes rolling painfully in their sockets, Shadow Insects covering her hoof to ear. She screamed in fear, before running away as fast as she could from the little pests. Blurry images flashed through his head, meeting Midna, Ilia's memory, Queen Rutela, the Hero's Shade's lessons, saving Colin, the Sages. He lay there, stunned, while she tried to get him to respond, but to no avail. Waving her little hands in front of his eyes did nothing, so she decided to transform him. As Twilight covered him, he could think of only one thing. Him. Waiting in the castle. Waiting to destroy him. Zant's 'God'. Ganondorf.

The Divine Beast struggled to his feet, back jolting unpleasantly as Midna hopped on, his hip throbbing from where he'd broken it. But there was no time to be selfish, Hyrule needed him, Ordona needed him, the Twilight Realm needed him... There was no time to heal or rest. He was running on pain and desperation. Trekking up twisted, Twilight covered staircases, fighting armour clad Darknuts, breaking ribs, legs, cutting through skin and sinew, blood spilling from gashes in black fur, almost to weak to run anymore, keeping on through pure determination and a will stronger than bone. Collapsing in the corridor, unable to carry Midna any longer, she, feeling pity for his mangled body, transformed him back. Even if he lived through this, he would lose his ability to walk. Still, he pushed on, disfiguring his broken leg beyond even looking like a leg anymore. Ganondorf was waiting and soon he would pounce.

For Twilit beasts must push on

To save a land of darkened light

No time remains for this young one

Whose heart is filled with unbridled might

He will fight

He will save them

He will bring light

Back to this kingdom
