Dimitri's POV

“Beg, Dimitri. Beg for your life and I may let you go,” he laughed in an insulting way.

“Never,” I bit my lip, “The threat of my life can never dither me from protecting her life.”

“Whoa! What a love! ” he commented, “Then I think the threat to her life can actually make you do that."

He turned to Rose who was still holding the gun to her head.

“Fire,” he said quietly.

Rose wasn’t fighting against his spirit effect anymore. Her fingers complied moving with the trigger.

“Stop!” I cried, “Stop it please!”

“What will you do if I stop?” he narrowed his eyes.

“I’d go out of here and leave you alone. But please don’t hurt her,” I was almost down on my knees begging.

“Fine,” he waved his hands and Rose’s gun came down.

“You’ll write a letter to the guardians to transfer you away from court to whatever place you like. You’re the queen’s trusted and they won’t argue against your decision."

“I’ll do it." My voice shook. I’ve never been more afraid in my life.

I got up to go.

“Wait!” he called out.

I stopped.

He snatched up Rose’s hand and deftly slipped off the wedding ring and threw it to me, “I don’t want anything reminding her of you.”

My heart shattered, but nevertheless I attempted to leave.

“And yeah, I’ll make sure that Adrian and Sonya leave the court too. And you’re to ensure that they don’t get a hint about this thing.”

“F*** you,” I muttered, storming out of the room as I pushed past people going straight to my room.

Slamming and bolting the door, I simply sank on the floor realizing the gravity of the situation I was in.

I had lost Rose. She was globe to the effects of spirit and it was all, because she was queen. I had warned her but she didn’t listen.

"Why? Oh why?” I pounded my fist on the wall, “Why am I so weak? Why can’t I wield magic?  Why is it that these spirit users are so strong?

The more I thought, the more frustrated I grew.

I was completely numb by the time I reached out for a paper to write my transfer letter.

Each word seemed to be a stake through my heart. And then I knew what I had to do. I needed to find Lissa and I needed to be free of royal duties to do that.
I touched the promise mark at the back of my neck. I was going to take the biggest decision of my life.

……And thus I decided I can’t continue with the post of a guardian anymore. I’d be grateful to you if you kindly consider my request and strip me of my title. I promise to remain faithful to the crown always.

Yours truly,
Guardian Dimitri Belikov.

I looked at the letter. My hands shook. The guardian promise was the hardest thing to give up, but if I am promised, I get bounded by duties and that makes it harder for me to get Lissa or find out ways to break the spirit.

I strode straight into the guardians’ headquarters.

“Belikov, what’s the matter?” Hans got up to greet me.

“I’m resigning.”

“What why? Have you gone crazy? On the other hand the queen wants Tanner and his bride to leave and Lord Ivashkov is being forced to evacuate his quarters! What’s happening?” his voice was concerned.

"You can’t change what’s happening. No one but Queen Vasilisa can. I’m going to find her,” I flipped around and walked out of the headquarters.

The sun of freedom seemed to beckon to me.

There was a figure at the window of the castle.

A forlorn face was looking out.
It disappeared a soon as it had come, but I was hundred percent sure it had been Rose.

"I'll bring you back to me," I promised silently.

A/N An apology for the late update. Life was busy... But I'm back again... Thanks for reading. What do you think will happen next? Was this turn expected?
