Day 4

My dad lay strewn across my mom. If I didn't see the blood stains all over the duvet, I would have thought they were sleeping.

I screamed, vomited and then fell to the ground crying my eyes out. I had lost my whole family in mere hours of each other. The grief and overwhelming sadness I felt consumed me as I stared at the gun that was still in my father's hand. My lower lip quivered as the hot tears reminded me of the past. How happy we were just a few months ago. I hated this fucking world and every useless vile thing it had in it.

What did I have to live for now? I'm certain that the only friend I had was dead. He was one of the volunteers that got vaccinated. I hadn't heard from him in what two days... one survivor.

My hands were shaking, snot started running down my face along with the tears. There's nothing for me now. No hope... no family. Just a virus that would soon take me. Why wait?

I sat back against the door of my parents room staring at the gun for what seemed like hours. Contemplating my life and it's soon to be end. Until I decided to go take a shower. Might as well be clean.

——

When I got out the shower, I heard the doorbell ring. Ah great... my whole family is dead and someone decides now is a good time to stop by. I don't have time for this.

"Who's there?" I called out from behind the door. A girl's voice said something I couldn't quite make out.
So I repeated myself a bit more annoyed.

"Who's there?"

She raised her voice this time.

"Hi, could you help me?"

What the hell? No I can't help you I can't even help myself. I wanted to say, but instead I opened the door to this strange looking girl. She had on a mask with 'BTS' written on it, a shirt that had a vest printed on it with the word Army. She had the oddest headband on with a cute little animal on both sides like ears, and to top it all off she was holding what looked to be a flashlight. Or one of those light toys little kids got that lit up. Is this girl serious?

"Hi, I'm Y/N." She smiled holding her hand out to me. I looked at it like a foreign object. Y/N pulled her hand back, stuffing it into her pocket smiling awkwardly up at me.

"What did you need help with?" I asked, feeling a slight suspicion that the help she needed, was mental.

"Uh... right. Okay so, I'm on a mission. I need to get to South Korea. I am convinced that there is a cure there."

Korea... right and I'm the Easter bunny. Why the hell would it be all the way over there? I'd be more convinced if she said Florida.

"Korea?" I asked.

She just nodded.

"And how do you propose we get there?"

Y/N pursed her lips and knitted her eyebrows. A few seconds later she waved her little light thing and giggled.

"By plane, silly!"

This girl is crazy...

"Right... by plane. Why didn't I think of that. Just let me get my pack."

She clapped her hands together, bouncing on her feet.

"I was kidding." I said deadpanned.

Her face fell. I don't have time to play along with a little girl's fantasy cure. I tried to close the door but she put her little converse wearing foot in the way with a squeak. I imagine that didn't feel too good.

"Please! I have no one..." Y/N cried.

No one...

Tears welled up in my eyes again. She too had no one else. I opened the door, staring at the girl who was now sitting on the ground criss-crossed rubbing her foot.

"Really?"

Again she nodded, a fresh tear falling down her soft looking face.

"Okay."

She smiled up at me as I opened the door for her to come in.

"Just stay out of the bedrooms. That's all that I ask." My voice caught in my throat as I spoke. Y/N looked at me with sad eyes as if she knew what was hidden behind the closed doors.

"Got any food?" She questioned. I gestured toward the kitchen.

"Knock yourself out."

I watched as she scurried off making sure she was busied with finding things. So that I could go back to my parents room.

My heart ached when I saw them lying there, lifeless. It was unbearable and yet I couldn't look away. I just needed to get the gun from his hand and a few other things so I...

I felt a rush of air zoom past me into the room. Before I could stop Y/N she had grabbed the gun, the pack of ammo on the nightstand I didn't see there, and a first aid kit that was sitting under the desk. She then grabbed my hand, yanking me out of the room and closing the door. She breathed heavily staring up at me. Her cheeks were flushed and her eyes were welling up with tears to match my own.

Carefully she sat the gun down along with the other things she had grabbed and then hugged me.

"I'm sorry." She whispered, hugging me a little tighter. I just stood there crying. The warmth of someone's arms being around me was enough to break the dam that was holding back.
