The Character I chose from Ender's Game is Valentine. I believe she is a morally good character, although many of her actions seem careless and selfish. She is quick to forgive and truly doesn't want to hurt anyone. Most of what she does is to help her younger brother Ender, or her older brother Peter. Many may not agree with her actions including Ender, but I believe she is only doing what she believes is right and what she thinks will help others. I chose her because she truly has a strange mind. The way she thinks before and after she acts on her thoughts drew me to her character. Each of the events I observed are what I believe to be key parts of the story.

Towards the beginning of the book, when Valentine, Peter, and Ender are playing buggers and astronauts, Peter begins threatening to kill both Ender and Valentine. Valentine tells him "They won't elect you if your opponents can dig up the fact that your brother and sister both died in suspicious accidents when they were little. Especially because of the letter I've put in my secret file in the library, which will be opened in the event of my death." It's quite obvious she is only saying this to protect Ender by simply black mailing Peter, dangling what he wants most in front of him, which is to be elected into the government. Within a brief moment after black mailing Peter she explains the contents of the letter: "It says, I didn't die a natural death. Peter killed me, and if he hasn't already killed Andrew, he will soon. Not enough to convict you, but enough to keep you from ever getting elected." This part of the text truly shows that Valentine is putting Peter down to defend Ender. She is putting her younger brother before herself, and it shows the true bond she has with him by simply showing Peter that he is not the only one with power.

The next event takes place while Ender is at battle school. Ender was becoming very depressed after finding the mirror at the end of the world showing that he had the face of Peter. Valentine was asked by Graff, to send a letter to Ender telling him that he was nothing like their brother Peter. Ender did not take kindly to this letter. He then felt as though Graff and all the teachers at battle school had taken everything that mattered to him. Valentine was only thinking of Ender, she didn't want Graff to send a fake letter to Ender as he had threatened. She felt as though it wouldn't hurt him if he received the makeshift letter from Graff rather than her. Valentines intentions sadly backfired . After the whole fact Ender believed she was one of them, trying to turn him into something he wasn't. Valentine didn't intend for it to happen, but there was nothing she could have really done to prevent Enders reaction.

The last event I observed was in the last chapter of the book, Ender had destroyed the bugger race, and was stuck on Eros not allowed to return home. Valentine flew to Eros offering Ender to come and join her in one of the new colonies on the bugger's deserted planets. Valentine had made it so that Ender could not return to Earth using her fake identity Demosthenes. She did this not to force him to go with her, but to protect him from being Peters pawn. Valentine explained this to Ender hoping that he wouldn't be mad. Ender however did seem to forgive her. Many would consider this a terrible idea, but Valentine explained to Ender that Peter was going to send for him, and then use Ender to gain power. Valentine knew how miserable Ender would have been knowing how much he had already been through.

Valentine also did things to promote her brother Peter, such as playing as Demosthenes and helping him rise to power within the government. These actions were again only for the good of a family member. Many of her actions didn't always play out as expected, but Valentine tried her hardest to show her true heart, and how dedicated she was to her family. Even I must say some of her intentions seemed ruthless, but Valentine only wants to protect what is close to her and wants to be close to her loved ones. I think that the way she acts towards family is what makes her a morally good character.
