Someday

I want to paint you a beautiful someday
With you and I
And a warm summer balm
And our hands the woven basket
Overflowing with our bounty

I want to paint you a patient someday
A future that lay softly across our dreams
Because someday is just as much never
As it is a forever
And it is the closest thing
Just outside the orbit of our grasp

I want to paint you a gentle someday
Because where the world is harsh
Our dreams will comfort us
In the embrace of 'what if's, and 'could be's
And although no one else can see it,
It's as real as the beating of your heart.

I want to paint you a simple someday
Somewhere we can go when the world turns sharp
A place to take refuge from time
A place to breathe again

But every time I pick up my brush I cry.

I cry because all I ever seem to paint are lies.
