He lays down in the silence, thinking.

Joshua Middleton observes, thinks, and plans.

But he is no longer a government official, he thinks, if he gave away secret vital information.

The rebellious act he committed makes his heart thump. He never realised how good it feels.

And he managed to talk to Amelia. He made her smile. God, it'd been a while since he'd seen her dimples show like that, her eyes sparkle in the darkness. Even though he'd been baiting her then, he'd still felt the same thrill he feels now.

In the darkness, he grins.

Not on the inside.

His lips turn and he grins!

Beside him, Maisie sleeps. He's grown used to her regular breath pattern, the way her petite body curls into the straw.

Something blossoms within him as he glances at her fondly.

Josh listens out, and when he's sure that all of them are asleep, including Amelia, he starts to make his move.

A few minutes later, he is ready, parting gift on the floor and in a rucksack, roused Maisie tightly gripping his hand, not uttering a sound. Sarah gave him the equipment yesterday. It sits in his rucksack, light in weight but heavy in meaning.

He turns to the rest of the barn and bids them goodnight.
