(aka my RANTING / ESSAY on the brilliance of Tui T. Sutherland's Darkstalker: Legends)

--

Darkstalker: Legends by Tui T. Sutherland is one of the most brilliant works of literatures in the entire genre of middle-grade books and possibly the entire universe. Especially when one realizes that this book is a middle-grade book that is part of a middle-grade series, one truly appreciates the deep planning and themes of the book. Sutherland creates interwoven story lines of Darkstalker, Clearsight, and Fathom, and they are all gorgeously written as individual characters. The theme of the potential of evil is a rather dark one for children's literature, but Sutherland explains it so well. We see that some characters like Indigo insist that Darkstalker is completely and utterly evil. However, we see from Clearsight and Fathom that Darkstalker may not be an inherently bad dragon. He truly loves his friends, and he believes what he is doing is justified. The different layers of the definition of 'evil' reflect the reality we live in. Sutherland approaches this subject in a digestible manner, where some readers could insist that Darkstalker was simply misunderstood while others could argue that his actions did eventually turn him 'evil'. The book was also modeled after another dark and serious subject: toxic relationships. Clearsight could represent people who are struggling to leave a toxic or abusive relationship. I am not claiming that Darkstalker was exactly abusive, but Clearsight's struggle to leave Darkstalker was similar to someone who needs to leave a bad relationship. She truly loves him, and it pains her to leave him although she knows he has gone down a bad path. But she finds hope and joy after leaving the relationship, and that is such a beautiful message.

To sum it up,  Tui T Sutherland is a QUEEN and Darkstalker: Legends is AMAZING
