So let's say I have 7 notifications, and they're all comments to 2 different stories from 3 different people.

Assuming that the first two notifications are comments from 2 different people in the same story. I go ahead and reply to those.

As soon as I finish the second, a notification pops up for the first one. I now have 6 notifications.

I go on to do the third and fourth, and when I do the fourth, the second and third comment have replies again.

I do the fifth, which is from the first person, and the sixth, from the third person. I do the seventh from the second person and the first person gives another reply.

I then reply to the first comment again (the eighth) and the ninth. The sixth and seventh comments get another reply. I finish those, and then the ninth comment gets another reply.

Then the fifth and the eight get a reply all at once, and I'm still at 3 notifications.

Eventually I'll have 7 again. Depending on time of day I might have more.
