THE DRAGONS ─

Loyal and ferocious creatures, dragons are trained as mounts for the riders. When full grown, their wingspan averages out at 20 feet across and they typically measure 15 feet from head to tail. Their torso is similar in size to a tiger and riders sit between of the shoulder blades.

Dragons hatch from an egg and start out much smaller. In the first year, they grow to the size of a large dog and are considered juveniles from then until they are 4 where they reach full size and maturity. They begin training as a juvenile and finish at 4 or 5 years.

The Academy raises many of these babies at a time. Eggs can be gotten from the wild but this is usually difficult as dragon parents are very protective. Dragons can be bred in captivity and the eggs can be raised from there. Dragon eggs can also sometimes be found being sold on the black market and dragons raised improperly can be unpredictable and dangerous. When the academy is low on young dragons they will occasionally attempt to break a wild dragon or one that has been confiscated from those who previously owned it illegally.

In cases where there are more students than dragons, a dragon-less student may choose to attempt to break an untrained dragon. If somebody does this, then they will get extra training time during study hours to try to train the dragon.

Dragons, while not having human-level intelligence are still very perceptive and emotional. They form strong bonds with their rider and can experience love, loss, grieving and anger. They also pick up on these emotions in humans.
