- I. WHILE YOU WERE OUT

AS THE GUARD ESCORTED HIM TO THE BOOTH, THE ONLY THING GOING THROUGH HIS MIND WAS HOW WRONG THIS ALL WAS.

He sat down in the stiff plastic chair, the thin glass separating him from the figure in orange. He was instructed to pick up the phone, and then the guard left his side.

He wiped his sweaty hands down on his jeans and reached for the receiver, tremors betraying his calm exterior.

He holds it for a minute, still, trying to decipher a coherent thought from the thousands of words swimming through his mind.

"Why-why did you do it?" He whispers, almost afraid that it won't be loud enough to be transmitted. The glass looks so thin, almost like he could reach through and be on the other side. How easily it could have been him, locked away from the world. It could've easily been him who had gone off the rails.

On the other side, fingers curl around the cord of the phone deliberately, the voice on the other end mulling over the answer.

Finally, after an eternity, a response comes.

"We were going to rule the world, some people just didn't understand that the way I did."

And then the line goes flat with a tell-tale beep, the back of the jumpsuit turned and walking away, an orange wall between him and the answers he so desperately needs.

He has so many more questions, but now he's sure he doesn't want to know more.
