Vance had agreed to meet Sarah at the Drive In. The Missouri Banks was playing and she insisted they went. It didn't seem like a movie she'd enjoy, but it honestly just seemed like she wanted to do something. Vance came to the conclusion that as boring as he thought Sarah was, she genuinely felt the same about herself.

"How are the two of you getting there?" Vance's Mom asked as she hurried around their house, in a rush to get to her night shift.

"I don't know." Vance shrugged.

"Are you gonna walk her home?" she tripped while getting her shoe on.

"Probably." he shrugged his shoulders.

"What movie are you seeing?" she went in.

"I don't know." Vance repeated himself. "Something she picked out."

"Can I meet her?" she gave him a hopeful smile.

"Oh, no." Vance shook his head. "Nope, nope, nope."

"Why not? Are you embarrassed of me?" she gasped in disbelief.

"Why would you need to meet her? She's just my tutor." Vance shrugged his shoulders, though he'd been starting to question that. He knew they'd promoted to friends by now, but after the conversations a few weeks ago about their rumors of being together, he'd distanced himself some. She scared him with what she'd said, mainly because he was starting to think it was true.

"Well, you've been spending so much time with her." she gave a small shrug. "Is she cute?"

"No, she's annoying." Vance rolled his eyes.

"But, in a cute way?" she rose her eyebrows in return.

"I don't know!" Vance got to his feet. "She's got nice hair."

"Ah, so she is cute." Leslie confirmed, nodding her head as she tied her shoes. "What'd you say her last name was? Do I know her?"

"No, you don't." Vance avoided telling his mom that she was the daughter of one of the officers that often took him in. "I have to g-"

A knock.

Leslie gasped. "Is that her?"

"No, no, no." Vance tired to race her to the door but they ended up shoving and she'd gotten her hands on the knob first, yanking it open quickly as he tried to play it cool as if he wasn't fighting his Mom over a door. Sarah was looking over her shoulder before turning her gaze back to the two of them. "Hey."

"Hey." she smiled, looking to the blonde next to him. They looked alike, a lot alike. "Hi."

"Hi." Leslie smiled at her. "I like your hair."

"Really?" Sarah grinned, touching her curls. "The curls or how it's pulled up?"

She liked her hair too, especially after she spent an ungodly amount of time tangling her hands through the middle to tie some of it up at the top to look like she had a lot of volume. She was rocking a new style, but also a ridiculously large headache and tired arms. She was glad someone had mentioned it, she'd have been disappointed if no one did. "Both."

Sarah smiled, Vance gave an odd look. "We're leaving."

"I'll see you in the morning." she called as Vance grabbed his vest and yanked Sarah off the porch.

"Nice meeting you!" Sarah called, waving over her shoulder. "Vance, I really like your Mom."

"I bet you do." he let her arm go to pull the vest on, which had originally been a jacket that he cut the sleeves off of when it started to get hot. "Nice hair."

"You like it? It took me a while." she touched the top of her head where her hair was higher. "By a while I mean I started when I first got home."

Vance gave her a half grin. "That's a lot of time, Sheeps. Who are you looking so good for?"

"Heard the ticketer would be cute." Sarah shrugged her shoulders in a joking way, making Vance laugh. Sarah took her backpack off. "You know how to get there?"

Vance hummed, looking over as Sarah pulled a missing poster with Billys face and information on it. "You gonna give that to the ticketer?"

"No, we pass right through the middle town so i'm gonna put another one up on that big post." she said back, pulling a tack out as well before putting her back pack back on. "You think a lot of people will be there?"

"Don't know." Vance shrugged, forcefully yanking his hand away when it grazed hers. "Do you even have a plan? Did you plan on just stealing a car off the street?"

"No, I don't have the mind of a criminal like some of us." she mocked him with raised eyebrows. "Mr.Yamada and Bruce are working at the concession stand to raise money for the baseball team so he's letting us use his."

"You sure you told him I was coming with you?" Vance gave a minor scoff.

"Who else would I bring? I have no other friends." Sarah said in return.

"True." Vance agreed with her. "If you had friends, would you bring them?"

"Mm, Billy hated watching movies." Sarah shrugged her shoulders. "Don't know why, but he did. So, no, probably not. Maybe if Finney and Gwen didn't hate me i'd bring them, but their Dad is really strict on no Rated R stuff. If that makes any sense."

"Why wouldn't that make sense?" Vance shrugged his shoulders. "My Mom never let me watch Rated R stuff until this year."

Sarah gave a snort at his words. "Woah, I can't believe that just came out of your mouth."

"Repeat it and i'll slice your face off." he threatened her.

"Got it." Sarah gave a minor laugh. "It doesn't make sense because it's a lie."

"What's a lie?" Vance rose his eyebrows.

Sarah looked over hesitantly. "If you tell anyone what i'm about to tell you...i'll slice your face off."

Vance rolled his eyes but hid a laugh. "Got it."

"Mr.Blake only doesn't want Gwen watching Rated R movies. He doesn't care if Finney does." Sarah hid a comical laugh. "But, he likes to lie and say his Dad won't let him because he's a chicken with scary movies."

Vance gave a loud laugh. "Are you kidding?"

"No, it's kinda sad." she had to laugh. "He was up late one time we I was watching them and asked if he could watch a movie with me. I didn't think much into it, you know? It was just Black Christmas. No, nope. Big mistake."

"Are you gonna tell me what happened?" Vance could picture it in his head and had to laugh. "I knew he was a chicken."

"He was outta there." Sarah made a racing motion with her hand. "I've never seen him run that fast in my life. Scared me to death, thought something happened. So, I run to his room and i'm all like 'Finney! What's the matter?!' and he's hiding under his bed about to cry. I've never felt so bad in my life."

"Woah. God, he's so lucky you haven't told anyone." Vance shook his head in disbelief as they stopped for Sarah to hang up the poster. "If people found out about that, kids reputation would be ruined."

"Kids at school already beat up on him pretty bad." Sarah frowned as she touched Billys photo before starting to walk again, Vance close next to her now that they were on a more narrow side walk. "He's just like me. We're the same person."

"Kids at school beat up on you?" Vance turned his head to her.

"Nah, they did in middle school though." she pointed out with a head shake. "Because it was a smaller school, plus I looked so different last year, I didn't think people realize i'm still me."

"Different?" Vance gave her an odd look. "What's that mean?"

"Mmm." Sarah winced. "Massive glasses, braces, my hair was super short and always pulled back, and dressed like a little boy. Great times."

Vance gave it a hard think. "You were in Mrs.Fishers class. I remember now."

"Told you, unrecognizable." Sarah laughed knowingly. "The summer before high school was...a story."

"To be honest with you...I always thought you were a little boy." Vance admitted as Sarah smacked his arm. "I'm sorry! Now that I know who you were, I just thought you were a boy that moved away."

"Nope, not a boy." she shook her head. "Did you make fun of me to your friends?"

Vance shrugged. "You never gave me a reason to. So, no."

Sarah cracked a grin, reaching over and shoving his shoulder. Vance did it back, shoving a little too hard as Sarah stumbled into the side walk. His hand grabbed hold of her wrist to steady her. "My bad!"
