SCARLETT HARGROVE is a stubborn girl. She can easily read a person—that was only because she had superpowers. When Scarlett was eight years old, she forgot who she was and was found by her adoptive mother outside a diner. Scarlett couldn't remember who she was or where she came from, but the only thing she remembered was she had superpowers that she couldn't let anyone know about.

Scarlett hid her superpowers from everyone—even her adoptive brother, Billy. Until she met her step-sister Maxine when she was ten years old. The two got super close quickly and Scarlett trusted her and showed Max her powers. Max agreed not to tell anyone and it was the duo's secret.

When Scarlett's adoptive dad marries Max's mom, Scarlett has to move to Hawkins away from her mother. This made Scarlett mad and she hated her dad for this—she always did. Her dad loves to pick on Scarlett and insult her. Scarlett tried to her best to stay with her mom, but Max didn't wanna be alone, so Scarlett moved with her.

Now, Scarlett was living in Hawkins hating herself and wanting to go back to California. It was until she started to like Hawkins when she is fused to Mike, feeling a spark around him.
