( . . . )

𝑯𝑶𝑼𝑺𝑬 𝑻𝑯𝑶𝑹𝑵𝑻𝑶𝑵—the noble family that ruled over the Thorn Islands, a small set of fertile lands that remained hidden in the Sea of Dorne. Steel blue was the color of their sigil; a sea dragon shining in the middle, built with white gold and embedded sapphires.

Coming from Rhoynar descent, people from the Thorn Islands could control the ocean by the use of water magic, supposing a great threat to Valyrian's sorcery, woven of blood and fire. After a long array of battles that led to the partial destruction of the islands, House Thornton established an alliance with House Targaryen, uniting the force of their dragons. The tragedy, however, had weakened their abilities, so much so that only a few newborns were still blessed with their ancestors' powers.

Throughout Westeros' history, House Thornton had held their pride close to their chests. Alliances were not needed when they had the protection of the Targaryens, so they kept to themselves, as quiet and sharp as the dragons that had once swum in their sea before extinction. They chose their warriors among the Gifted Ones—both women and men who could practice water magic—and formed them in combat once they reached the age of ten and three. Until then, a special tribe of Maesters taught the lucky children everything they needed to know in order to develop their powers.

Despite the respect they had gained among their people, decades had passed since the last time a member of the noble family was born with the ability to control the waters. That fact, however, only remained true until the islands began to chime a prophecy, a tale spread by the last Rhoynar woman who still lived among the Thorntern population: one day, a baby would be born—a precious girl who would bring honor to her family. Nevertheless, a part of the elder's prediction got lost between the whispers, for the child was also bound to suffer greatly; the Thornton Islands would perish as her blue veins turned gray, and she would become lost in a war of ashes and flames.

But there was also a promise of salvation, a blazing spark of hope. The only thing she had to do was follow the Silver String of Fate; although stretched and twisted, it would attach her to a golden boy, whose heart was said to beat with both fire and blood.

To save herself, she would have to dance among Black and Green dragons, and hope that the tides would have mercy on her.

𝐎𝐑𝐈𝐀𝐍𝐍𝐀 𝐓𝐇𝐎𝐑𝐍𝐓𝐎𝐍  was a miracle turned curse.

A child born from the ocean, a girl blessed with dark auburn hair and opal eyes. By the time of her birth, water sorcery was on the verge of extinction; only the so-called Gifted Ones could still practice the traditions that their Rhoynar ancestors had given them, and House Thornton's reputation as an independent force was quickly rusting around the Seven Kingdoms. When the second and youngest daughter of Lord and Lady Thornton proved to be one of those rare creatures who could control the waves with their own hands, her birth was devotedly celebrated by both commoners and nobles all throughout the Thorn Islands.

From a young age, her only duty was to learn the art of water magic and elevate the Thornton last name by perfecting her abilities. Orianna became a beacon of hope among the members of her House, a golden vessel that would carry the customs of her homeland. She was loved, treated with a kindness most children didn't know of, and she did her best to fulfill the role she was meant to play.

Once a blooming flower, her petals eventually withered under the wicked spell of a new title: future leader of the Thorn Islands. Her older brother's death, caused by the effects of her own powers, trapped her inside a cage she could not escape from. Dreams of freedom turned into ashes, wishes to travel all around the Seven Kingdoms drowned in poisonous water. In the blink of an eye, her childhood was crushed by fate's chokehold; it gave her a life she loathed, one she had never wished for.

Gone were the days on which her thoughts were filled with something other than guilt and numbness. Her blood ran colder as time passed, but her body grew tense, rigid, like an iron shield that would protect her from the madness that took over her father's mind after the death of his firstborn. Rumors, too, changed with her soul; servants and Maesters started talking of her as an evil spirit, a witch who'd doomed the Thorn Islands to terrible destruction. She became bitter, sharper, and, when resources turned scarce and hunger plagued the streets, Lord Thornton did not hesitate to point fingers at Orianna.

She was the reason why the true heir had gotten sick—she was the one who led him to his death and, with that, the islands were one step away from falling apart. Blinded by his rage, Alaric Thornton gave her daughter an ultimatum: find a husband who could fix the mess, or pay her debt by losing her life.

Scared by the promise of death, and unwilling to give her father the satisfaction of seeing her fail, the girl accepted the challenge.

She did not aspire for a tender romance; Orianna didn't believe in fantasies, so she wouldn't take the foolish risk of giving her heart away. Then again, she knew that a marriage—even if loveless—could ease the whispers, and the insults, and the critiques she received every time she blinked or even breathed in the wrong way. She simply had to find an acceptable prospect, one of the wealthiest and most respected men in all of Westeros, and then maybe, just maybe, she would stop feeling like a burden. Nevertheless, the fact that House Thornton barely had any allies that could possibly want to take her hand in marriage didn't make things any easier, and neither did the poor situation of the islands.

But then a pair of honey eyes present themselves as the perfect opportunity. A boy who had once been her closest companion, the son of the heir to the Iron Throne. Six years after the last time they saw each other, he had turned into a mere stranger; still, he was the missing key she'd been desperately looking for.

She needed Jacaerys Velaryon to court her.

After all, men were known for wanting to have what was not theirs—if they thought Orianna Thornton was getting the attention of a Targaryen prince, almost every lord in Westeros would wish to have her as their wife. The deal was supposed to be simple: he would feign interest on her and, in exchange, she would help him avoid the possibility of ending up trapped in an arranged marriage, for he was patiently waiting for his true love to arrive.

Prince Jacaerys was fire, Orianna Thornton was ice. Nevertheless, he was exactly what she required in order to get her redemption. No bonding, no feelings, no strings attached; affection was a distraction, a weakness that would only cause unnecessary sorrow and distress. He was no more than a pawn in a game she had to play, and things were meant to stay that way.

However, Orianna didn't count on the power that memories could hold over her shattered soul. The fond moments they had once shared together, the blurry fragments of blissful happiness—it all crawled its way back to the surface, mixed with a newfound flame she didn't know existed.

      And she hated it.

The everlasting spark that burned through his eyes. The way he moved his hands, the words he said. The fact her guts twisted when he stood next to her, the dragon-like determination he portrayed every time he walked into a room. She despised it all, but she didn't have any other option but to keep him around.

As war starts to haunt their steps, Jacaerys may find a way to crawl deep into her veins. Fire arises, blood gets spilled, and Orianna is forced to realize one thing: she might be able to control the tides, but she can not contain the rapid beating of her own heart.

The world had once given her misery, and so she retaliated with resentment—a vicious will to fight, the only thing that had kept her alive for years on end. But when the ocean whispers a lullaby, when flesh gets torn and bones are broken, she understands that love has sunken its claws around her ankles, and she can not escape from the Silver String of Fate anymore.

⁰⁰    first of all, i have to thank you for giving this story a chance, but i also need to point out that i am not a native english speaker and i don't usually practice the language, so my grammar can sometimes be questionable or unclear.

i sincerely apologize for that and would like you to help me correct my mistakes. i just hope you can still enjoy my writing and have the opportunity to read a little bit about house of the dragon's sweetheart and the new love of my life, jacaerys velaryon.

⁰⁰    other than that, i have to clarify that all the rights belong to the creators of «house of the dragon», as well as to george r.r. martin (writer of «fire and blood»), except my own characters, their respective storylines, and their interactions with the original cast.

⁰⁰ 𝐓𝐈𝐊𝐓𝐎𝐊. (edits) ┊i have a tiktok account where i upload edits for this fic. i politely invite you to give it a look! my account is "ohmonamour.wp".

⁰⁰ 𝐏𝐋𝐎𝐓. ┊the plot of this book will follow the events of the first season of «house of the dragon». however, because there are barely any scenes that include young adult jace and that season 2 will probably be released in a few years, i will take creative liberties by writing original scenes, plus adding stuff that doesn't appear in the series or the books. besides that, i also haven't read george r.r. martin's book, so forgive me if i add or change things from the original plot.

the ending of «FLESH AND BONE» will also defer from the original saga, so be prepared to read some type of "au". (:

⁰⁰    𝐖𝐀𝐑𝐍𝐈𝐍𝐆. ┊this fic might contain sexual scenes, violence, death, as well as other serious topics. in case you haven't noticed, i also have to remind you that JACAERYS VELARYON IS NOT A MINOR in this story, and neither is Orianna.

⁰⁰    last but not least, i have to thank you once again for reading. remember that any type of plagiarism is prohibited and that everything you read is a pure work of fiction.
