AS long as the Valyrians have held bonds with dragons, the Paethorys have held power and stood unchallenged as one of the leading families in the stronghold. They are among the most ancient of houses in Valyria, politically powerful, and with twenty-two dragons at their beck and call. Their distinguishing mark is that of the ice dragon, rumored to live to the north of Essos in the Shivering Sea, said to be more ferocious and deadly than those that the Valyrians have tamed. Their members are often fantastic riders as well as politically talented, which has been the foremost weapon that has gained them such a stronghold throughout the centuries. Being a house with such substantial age, the founder and origin have been seemingly forgotten, so old that the stories and tales withered away with time.

VALYRIA. An empire advanced beyond its time, a society governed by families of powerful nobles who were ruthless in their conquering and ruling. Known best for their advancements in technological standpoints and development in the arts, they were considered an unequaled people among the rest of the known world. They tamed dragons, conquered the Ghiscari, laid out an empire among all of Essos, and even ventured as far as the outpost of Dragonstone along the eastern coast of Westeros. There's not much known that the Valyrians were unable to do.

NEARLY five thousand years before its doom, comely sheep herders discovered the lairs of dragons within the Fourteen Fires, a chain of volcanoes surrounding the peninsula. Yet, Valyrians were more than dragonlords. They practiced blood magic and other dark arts, delving deep into the earth for secrets and twisting the flesh of beasts and men to fashion monstrous and unnatural chimeras. It is believed that for these sins the gods in their wroth struck Valyria down.

AMONG the two score rival houses that contested for the rule of Valyria, the noble family of Paethorys were along the elite of the elite, their sons bred for war and their daughters sought after as the most beautiful of maidens in the Freehold. Despite being as elite as they were and following the Valyrian tradition of marrying brother to sister, the Paethorys never shied away from a chance to gain an even better footing within their power and would often marry younger daughters into lower families in order to achieve absolute loyalty among their ranks. Especially when troubling times called upon such an occasion.

DRAGON LORD Vaeron Paethorys has already secured the future of his family by marrying his heir, Aelyx, and daughter, Maelys, who are expecting the newest member of their house in the near future. With the recent death of their last son, Maegon, Vaeron is forced to look other ways for a match for his daughter Vaella, toward a lesser house from which he needs loyalty. For the first and last time, the Paethorys look toward the Targaryen's.
