CHAPTER ONE

AN ABSOLUTE ANGEL

" and for once bravery looked a lot like running away "

- kat savage

She remembered the fire.

If there was one thing that Josephine remembered as she walked among the humans of Los Angeles with her wings hidden away and pain reflecting from her grieving face, it was the feeling of being enveloped by scalding hot fire- the human world too bright but yet so very dark. It reminded her of when she first fell, banished from heaven to rule the underworld of those with guilt itching every part of their bodies.

There was a heavy pain- rattling in her chest and Josephine could only assume that it had to be her heart bursting with anticipation and shock, as she found herself plummeting through a large open space.

The angel remembered the horrifying pain-remembered the first time when she fell in fear, knowing her body was going to slam against the ground but, thankfully this time she was welcomed by a slight thud against her spine and the back of her skull- hardly any pain for a celestial being like her.

She tried not to close her tired eyes because she knew that the darkness would remind her of the days back in the prison she just escaped- hours passing by her as she screamed in the name of her heartbreak.

Back when she fell from heaven, she had Lucifer by her side- both newly weds filled with anger that came with losing the Rebellion but now, it was different. She had come to Earth from down below this time, betrayal being her worst enemy and still her best friend. For her, flying up was harder without her husband- she was only just an angel. A fallen angel.

Her eyes flashed between their normal chocolate color to her angelic glowing blue eyes, the dress she wore standing out in 2012 with its long skirts and old fashion. People gave her odd looks but no one seemed to be fazed at the sight of a woman in her early thirties watching the world as if it was a strange thing never discovered- this was LA after all.

Josephine smiled at the sight of it all, grateful that the journey was over and now she could relax here on Earth. She had no intention of finding her husband just yet- it took her a long time to come to peace with it but she finally came to terms with the fact that if Lucifer didn't respect her then he simply didn't deserve her.

"Hello," A little girl ran up to Josephine- her parents not in any sight, "Your dress is so pretty!"

The angel smiled.

"Thank you, my dear child," she nodded her head and kneeling so she could be the same height as the girl who seemed to be no more than five or six, Josephine questioned, "What's your name?"

The girl gave the angel a toothy grin. "My name is Trixie!" she cheered, "What is yours?"

Josephine smiled- children had always held a special place in her heart, "I am Josephine."

"Trixie!" the sound of a worried woman cut the conversation short as a couple made their way towards them. Josephine wondered if this was the child's mother and her suspicions were confirmed at the look of relief that overcame the blonde woman at the sight of Trixie.

"Mom!" Trixie laughed as she ran over to the woman who seemed to have a grey-eyed man right next to her- probably the girl's father. Josephine stood up, still a little disoriented from her trip but happy that the little girl wasn't lost or something like that.

"Oh my God, I hope she didn't trouble you," the blonde woman spoke, kissing her daughter's forehead as the father smiled gratefully at Josephine.

The Angel shook her head, "Oh no! She was an absolute angel," Josephine laughed at her little joke, "I would know."

"I am Chloe," The woman said with a sweet smile, "And this is my husband Dan."

"I am Josephine."

"Look, Mommy!" Trixie laughed, "Josephine is so pretty..."

The angel already felt happy about her decision to leave hell.

"And you are adorable, Miss Trixie."

These were nice people and as she talked more to them, Josephine started to feel more comfortable in her skin. They were kind and as they conversed on the sidewalk of a busy city, the angel learnt a lot about them- they were both cops in the L.A.P.D. and that they got married only a few years ago.

"Excuse me, if I am rude in asking," Daniel Espinoza spoke, "But are you a actor or something? Your clothes are very old."

Josephine laughed nervously, "Yes- I am an actor! And I was doing this thing in that bar earlier-"

Dan cut her off, excitedly, "You were doing improv?"

"Why not?" Josephine shrugged, not even realizing that for the first time in her immortal life, she had actually made nice friends that weren't actually demons or people who secretly hated her.

L.A. already started to feel like a place where she could belong.

It took her a bit of time, but Josephine finally started to fit in. Six months after she found herself in L.A., Josephine had grown quite a bit in her heart- humans were naïve but still so oblivious about what the world actually was. These people... they weren't aware of the fact that God actually existed and that they would all one day end up in heaven or hell based on their own guilt.

The angel had bought herself a small book shop with the help of an old friend and found herself a small apartment to stay in. She had legally become Josephine Lewis with the help of a Neil Palmer- A normal woman who moved to Los Angeles from Spain after a failed marriage.

It wasn't that far from the real truth.

A part of her liked the thrill that came being around humans that were actually alive. She knew more than them about most things, and she could see just how lively they were. Last time she was on earth was in the 1800s and everything was much more advanced since then- women actually had a voice in this time period.

Josephine had found Lucifer a little while back, learning of her husband and his club 'LUX'. She knew the Devil slept around- He had been unfaithful to her from the dawn of time starting with Eve and ending with both women and men that were rumored to sleep with him every night. The deepest parts of her heart still shattered every time a new person was added to his list and sometimes, the angel couldn't help but feel as if she was just another name to him- another conquest.

She tried her best not to think about him.

Josephine was lucky enough to find the Decker-Espinoza's again- somehow she ended up staying in a house that was near Chloe's. Chloe and Dan had gotten separated just a month ago and the woman had moved into her mom's apartment.

Apparently, Dan had started to always put work before their family and never made time for them. Josephine empathized with the young detective and soon became the one thing for Chloe that she herself didn't have- A stable rock. She helped out as much as she could- from babysitting Trixie to helping out as much as she could on Chloe's cases. She even started helping the new forensic scientists in the LAPD out, this being a subject that she was surprisingly very quick to catch up on.

Her apartment was small and quiet, unlike how it was in hell. There was a comfortable silence that enveloped her little house and she was satisfied- which was a first in a very long time. Of course, the peace she had just gotten had to be ruined by her brother-in-law.

"Hello, Josephine," rang the voice of Amenadiel as he appeared in her living room without any invitation, "You seem to be far away from home."

Annoyed, the queen of hell put her copy of 'Wuthering Heights' down, "So do you, Amenadiel."

The archangel rolled his eyes at his sister-in-law's words, maintaining his posture, "My duty to my father asks me to be here. Go home, Josie."

Josephine tilted her head- as if in deep thought before smirking at him, "How about no?"

"Please do not make it harder than it is already becoming," Amenadiel groaned, "Hell needs a ruler."

"Send Lucifer," Josephine shrugged like it was no big deal, "It's his kingdom- And while you're at it, change from that dress to something normal, please."

"It's a robe!" he complained, "And Lucifer is not one to listen. You were banished from the Silver City, so you can take care of Hell... I believe it's time you returned, sister."

Josephine's eyes flashed blue as she stood up as fast as she could, "I am not your sister, Amenadiel and I would like it if you stopped calling me that."

She knew she couldn't harm Amenadiel- he was an archangel who was much stronger than her, but she still hoped that he got the idea.

"Fine... Josephine," the archangel gave her one of his famous 'I-am-trying-to-do-the-best-for-you' faces, "But you must return back to hell."

"You see, Manny," she spoke, trying the new nickname (and then decided that it sounded very weird), "Lucifer was punished to stay in hell and I was punished to stay wherever he is."

Josephine shrugged and sat down with a satisfied grin, "I am where Lucifer is- it's God's will."

"Do not bring my dad into this for entertainment," Amenadiel glared at her, "Go home and take Lucifer with you."

Josephine stood up again, wondering is she should just run away now- it seemed advisable.

"I am not going to find Lucifer, Amenadiel," she spoke the way one might explain a naughty child that it is wrong to steal a baby's candy, "I am trying to have a vacation- I will go back to Hell without any complain as long as Lucifer agrees to do the same. Otherwise you can just forget it."

"What? Are you too afraid to even face your husband now?" Amenadiel raised his eyebrows, "What happened to all that talk of 'All we need is each other'?"

Josephine glared at him, "Go to hell, Amenadiel and if you know what's good for you- you won't tell Lucifer that I am here."

The angel walked out of her room knowing that Amenadiel will find his own way out. She tried her best not to break one of the building's walls in her frustration as she found her way to Chloe's apartment. Hopefully, Trixie was back from pre-school and Josephine would be able to spend some time with her.

She was walking, shaking her head as she cursed her darling father-in-law for being so bad at his job when she tripped over the stairs, tumbling down with a loud thud.

It actually hurt.

"Oh my God," Chloe's voice shook the angel out of her pain, "Jo! Are you alright?"

Josephine winced as she slowly got back to her feet, pain being a much foreign concept to her.

"Oh, Jo," Chloe shook her head, "You are bleeding- "

Josephine's eyes grew large as saucers as her friend's words registered in her brain, "I am- what?"

She involuntarily raised her hand up to see blood dripping from her hand, a large deep cut marking her soft skin. She was actually bleeding.

She looked up at Chloe- the blonde was watching her every move with a motherly expression etched on her face and Josephine simply didn't understand.

"Come inside, I need to..."

Words seemed to get lost to the raven-haired angel as she merely stared at her bleeding hand.

What the hell was happening to her?
