ever love someone because
they were incapable to love me

The next morning rolled around, Glenn, T-Dog, Shane, Maggie, Maia and Beth were gathering rocks outside the farmhouse for Otis' funeral.

The sounds of vehicles approaching caught the small group's attention.

All the cars in the distance pulled up to the farmhouse.

"Uh, T, tell Rick and Lori they're here." Maia piped up after a few moments of silence.

T-Dog nodded before jogging up to the farmhouse and heading inside.

Maia turned to the others who were already looking at her and they all turned to walk up to the house from the trees they were standing underneath.

As the RV and other cars pulled up, Daryl on his brother's motorcycle led them to the driveway.

Shortly after Lori, Rick and T-Dog got back outside with Hershel the cars had been parked and everyone came outside.

Luna exited the RV and ran towards Maia.

"Mai." Luna called for her sister and hugged her tightly.

"Hey." Maia hugged her little sister back and greeted her back softly.

Dale stopped in front of Rick.

Before Dale spoke Maia pulled away from the hug and saw how Luna gave Glenn a quick wave and he waved back at her with a small smile.

Lara walked forward and Glenn kneeled down and gave his sister a hug as he listened to Dale who started talking.

"How is he?" Dale pondered.

"He'll pull through." Lori smiled in relief and nodded along.

"Thanks to Hershel and his people." Lori looked at the Greene family with gratitude.

"And Shane." Rick piped up.

"We'd have lost Carl if not for him." Rick spoke before Dale stepped forward and hugged Rick.

The others all took a step forward hugging each other.

The kids all hugged Glenn, Maia, T-Dog, Rick and Lori one after the other.

Anthony then stepped forward and gave his twin sister a hug, Maia immediately melted into the hug and hugged him back.

She let out a small sigh in relief, letting the anxious over thinking melt away by just being in her siblings' presence.

The tank top she wore revealed the scar on her collarbone that she never spoke about, she felt like someone was looking at her but she didn't want to acknowledge it.

Anthony pulled away and Izraella pushed past him and hugged Maia whilst Rick spoke again, explaining the situation with Carl.

Izraella embraced Maia with a small light and soft chuckle as soon as she pushed Anthony out of the way, letting Maia to hug the girl back with a small smirk.

Anthony gave a false offended look and Izraella winked his way.

Izraella held Maia tightly and kept her arm around her shoulder after she pulled away from the embrace.

The group all listened to Rick talk about how it had been an accident.

"Is he okay?" Rosalyn asked softly.

"He's fine, honey." Lori gave Rosalyn a smile and Rosalyn nodded, giving Giselle a smile.

Giselle sent Lori a wink who smirked in return.

———————

The group had been told about Otis and what happened to him.

Everyone agreed to stand for a service to all pay their respects.

They all surrounded a tombstone made from rocks that they gathered up earlier.

They all stood next to their family members.

The Koa's stood next to Dale.

The Ramìrez's stood next to the Grimes family and the Rhee's stood next to Daryl.

"Blessed be God, father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Praise be to him for the gift of our brother Otis, for his span of years, for his abundance of character." Hershel spoke up in the quiet and sombre atmosphere.

"It's, who gave his life to save a child's, now more than ever, our most precious asset. We thank you, God, for the peace he enjoys in your embrace." Hershel continued, the Greene family had tears well up in their eyes as he continued speaking.

"He died as he lived, in grace." Hershel ended before turning to Shane.

"Shane," The elderly man called for the man.

"Will you speak for Otis?" Hershel asked politely.

"I'm not good at it." Shane replied in a low tone.

"I'm sorry." He spoke just above a whisper, the others glancing his way.

"You were the last one with him. You shared his final moments. Please." Patricia pleaded through a slight sob.

"I need to hear. I need to know his death had meaning." Patricia gave Shane a sad look, tear-stained cheeks and her piercing blue eyes pleaded.

Eventually the blond earned a soft "Okay." from Shane.

Maia looked at Shane's body language, how he was so set on not talking about it before he gave into the widow's plea.

"We were about done. Almost out of ammo. We were down to pistols by then. I was limping. It was bad" Shane averted from looking the family in the eye as he spoke.

"Ankle all swollen up. "We've got to save the boy." See, that's what he said. He gave me his backpack and shoved me ahead." Shane explained further.

"Run," he said. He said, "I'll...I'll take the rear and I'll cover you." Shane reenacted the scene, painting the picture.

"And when I looked back..." Shane let a long silence set in.

The kids were quiet and each had sad looks on their faces, not sure how to react to the story.

As Shane limped forward toward the wheelbarrow that held the rocks he spoke.

"If it weren't for Otis....I'd have never made it out alive." Shane spoke up, the group all watched as he limped forward.

Luna squeezed onto each of her siblings' hands, seeking a sense of security in this situation.

Anthony and Maia each gave the girl a reassuring squeeze in return.

"And that goes for Carl, too. It was Otis. He saved us both." Shane glanced at the ground before looking at Patricia.

"If any death had meaning, it was his." His voice cracked as he said the last part.

Seeing the Greene family break was upsetting, no one should have to lose their family member like that.

To a herd of walkers all wishing to feast.

They may have not seen it but the entire group was sure they could picture that horrible scene.

As Hershel closed off the service, everyone had dispersed of themselves around the farm.

Leaving the family to mourn in peace.

————————

The group was setting up their camp, their tents.

Maia was helping Carol and Glenn set up a tent whilst Rick conversed with a few others on the plan to find Sophia.

Maia was awfully quiet.

Every time she looked up, she met his gaze.

It was like she couldn't get rid of him.

Carol had been trying to keep up conversations with the two, however Glenn had been the one engaging.

As Maia placed the metal rod of the tent down, Glenn stepped on the opposite side and it hit Maia's nose.

Maia groaned and put her hand up to her nose.

As Glenn looked up and realized what he had done his eyes widened.

"Ow." Maia raised her voice and looked at Glenn with a look of disbelief.

"Oh my god, Maia, are you okay?" Carol looked up abruptly and saw Maia holding her nose.

"I-I am so sorry. Oh my god, I- Do you need help, I swear I didn't mean to-." Glenn rambled nervously seeing a bit of blood dripped from Maia's nose.

"It's fine, Glenn." Maia winced and put her head up looking at the sky, trying to help the bleeding in some way.

"I'm so sorry." Glenn walked up to Maia's side and he looked at her with wide eyes.

"Glenn, I said it's fine." Maia put a hand on his chest and she still looked up at the sky and she pushed off of him.

"Oh my, are you okay?" The voice that Maia recognised as Maggie came from her left.

"Yeah, yeah I'm fine, just bleeding, thanks." Maia spoke sarcastically and accidentally sniffled before she groaned.

"Hey, do you want something?" Maggie asked out of pure concern.

"Where's your bathroom?" Maia turned to Maggie with her hand over her nose.

"In the house, upstairs." Maggie spoke with concern on her face.

"Thank you." Maia nodded and sighed before turning to walk off to the house.

"Maia, I'm so sorry, I-." Glenn was cut off by Maia again.

"Glenn I said it's fine, just relax, fuck sake." She mumbled the last part.

"Again I'm so so sorry, I swear I didn't-." Glenn was once again cut off by a very annoyed Maia.

"The more you fucking apologise, the more i wanna punch you, fuck." Maia muttered annoyed as she walked off towards the farmhouse

As Maia got to the porch she knocked on the door as she held her hand over her nose, trying to be polite and trying to ignore the throbbing in her nose.

Patricia answered the door and had tear stained cheeks and her eyes widened in shock.

"Oh my god, what happened?" Patricia looked at Maia who gave her a tight lipped smile.

"I'm sorry to bother but where's your bathroom? Maggie did tell me but where upstairs?" Maia tried to sound polite as she asked, again trying to ignore the pain.

"Honey, do you want me to take a look at your nose? You're bleeding." Patricia asked with some concern and ushered Maia inside.

"No, no it's okay, thank you." Maia brushed her off.

"Your nose could be broken if it's bleeding this much, let me take a look?" Patricia sniffled slightly before Maia gave in.

"Okay, thank you again, I didn't want to intrude." Maia held her hand over her nose still and Patricia placed a hand on Maia's arm ushering her to the kitchen.

"Come let's take a look." Patricia pulled out a chair for Maia and Maia sighed out.

"Thank you." She spoke just above a whisper.

Maia removed her hand from her bleeding nose and Patricia winced.

"Oh that's bad. How on earth did this happen?" Patricia took out some supplies to fix up Maia's nose.

Maia sighed as she let Patricia help her out.

"Long story." Maia replied and lifted her head so Patricia could see what was wrong.

"Yeah, you have a broken nose." Patricia sighed out and Maia sighed in return.

"Did this happen often? getting a broken nose, I mean." Patricia got out some bandages and unwrapped and placed a bandage on the bridge of her nose.

"Uh, yeah, in highschool I got into fights." Maia replied softly as she winced slightly.

"I can...tell." Patricia paused before she finished up and by this time the blood had been wiped off and she was all fixed up.

Maia raised her eyebrows slightly and Patricia let out a small chuckle.

"It's internal damage, you can tell it's been fractured multiple times." Patricia gave her a small smile.

"Right." Maia stood up.

"Thank you, again, you really didn't have to." Maia gave Patricia a small smile.

"It's okay, I like helping out." Patricia sniffled and washed her hands.

"Thank you." Maia smiled.

"You're welcome." Patricia sent her a small smile and Maia took that as her cue to leave and she exited the house.

The front door creaked open as Maia exited the house seeing Rick glancing around.

"Hey there, Fox and friends." Maia gave Rick a small smile.

"Maia. What happened to the nose?" Rick pointed to the bandage on Maia's nose.

"Well, long story short, Glenn broke my nose." Maia sighed and glanced over at the camp where she saw Glenn and Anthony.

"Now how the hell did that happen?" Rick gave Maia a confused look.

"We were setting up the tents and he stepped on one of the metal rods and hit it directly into my nose." Maia sighed and put her hands on her hips.

Maia glanced at Anthony and Glenn who stood next to each other and looked like they were whispering.

Anthony picked up a pair of binoculars and placed them to his eyes.

"What is that dumbass doing?" Maia sighed and tilted her head whilst examining Anthony from afar.

"No clue." Rick replied with a sigh.

"I'm gonna go find out, excuse me." Maia sighed in return and Rick nodded with a slight chuckle as she walked away.

As Maia walked closer she heard a faint, "Hello farmer's daughter."

Maia then turned to Anthony and stood in front of the binoculars causing Anthony to flinch.

"You look like a stalker." Maia put her hands on her hips giving Anthony a stern look before snatching the binoculars out of his hands.

"Woah, what's with the nose?" Anthony tried changing the subject.

"Not the point, why are you casually just spying on the 'farmer's daughter'?" Maia raised her eyebrows and Anthony licked his lips.

"Whoops?" He spoke up, not sure what to say.

"Weirdo." Maia rolled her eyes and saw Glenn averting her gaze.

"But seriously what happened to your nose?" Anthony asked, crossing his arms across his chest.

"Glenn stepped on a metal rod and it hit me directly in the nose." Maia replied and sighed.

Anthony snorted and Maia rolled her eyes.

"I'm still really sorry for that." Glenn spoke up with pure sincerity, he looked nervous.

"Glenn." Maia spoke sternly and gave him a tired look before he got the hint and nodded.

"Sorry." He nodded again and Maia chuckled slightly at the last apology.

Anthony glanced between the two and gave Maia a smirk causing her to look at him confused before Lori walked up to them.

"Hi. Here's your list." Lori handed Glenn a small piece of paper before she sent a smile to the twins.

"Hi." She spoke softly.

"Hey." The twins spoke in unison before Lori gave them a look and they looked at each other.

"Uh, we're gonna go, uh, see you guys around." Maia put her hands on Anthony's shoulders and ushered him to walk away.

"No need to be pushy." Anthony rolled his eyes as he and Maia walked away from Glenn and Lori then towards Giselle.

"So? Do you like Maggie or not?" Maia crossed her arms across her chest and Giselle chuckled.

"Hello to you two, too." Giselle smiled as she sat on a camp chair watching the kids play tag.

"Hey Giselle." Maia smiled at Giselle who raised her eyebrows at seeing the bandage on Maia's nose.

"Long story." Maia had caught the hint and sighed.

"Back to you, Do you like her or not?" Maia turned back to Anthony.

"I think she's really pretty but I haven't exactly talked to her, so I don't know." Anthony shrugged and put his hands in his jean pockets.

"Well you're not gonna know if you don't talk to her, plus she's better than Andrea." Maia whispered and Anthony rolled his eyes.

"You like Andrea?" Giselle whispered with a look of disbelief.

"Tell me about it, it's disgusting." Maia rolled her eyes.

"I-." Anthony was cut off by T-Dog who yelled.

"Guys! You have got to see this." T-Dog exclaimed and the twins shared a confused glance.

"I'll watch the kids, get Izzy and go." Giselle nodded to the two who nodded in return.

Maia and Anthony jogged in the direction of T-Dog and looked for Izraella, seeing her sat on the RV, keeping watch.

"Iz! get down here!" Maia yelled at Izraella who sat on top of the RV.

"What's wrong?" Izraella climbed down the ladder.

"God knows what, but after this I have shit to tell you." Maia replied as Izraella gave her a confused glance and followed the two who followed the group who were ahead.

"what's with the?" Izraella asked and Maia sighed.

"Like I said, shit to tell you." Maia sighed.

The three followed the group that was ahead towards the well.

"What's going on?" Anthony asked as the three arrived at the well whilst the group surrounded it.

Maia, Izraella and Anthony all peeked inside the well and Dale shone his flashlight into the bottom of the well.

The sounds of growling echoed from the bottom of the well before the light revealed a "walker" at the bottom.

"Huh, looks like we've got us a swimmer." Dale sighed and the others all made disgusted faces.

———————

"How long do you think it's been down there?" Glenn pondered.

By this time they've gotten the top of the well off.

"Long enough to grow gills." Andrea replied.

"We can't leave it in there. God knows what it's doing to the water." Lori piped up and glanced at Shane.

"We gotta get it out." Shane said and Anthony rolled his eyes subconsciously.

"Easy. Put a bullet in its head." T-Dog replied.

"I'll get a rope." Anthony turns to get a rope before Maggie piped up.

"Whoa, whoa, guys. No." Maggie shook her head.

"Why not?" Anthony asked confusedly, speaking for everyone.

"It's a good plan." Glenn turned to Maggie and then to Anthony.

"It's stupid plan." Andrea piped up.

"A very stupid plan." Izraella and Maia spoke in unison giving each other a look after they spoke.

"If that thing hasn't contaminated the water yet, blowing its brains out will finish the job." Izraella leaned on Maia's shoulder looking down into the well.

"She's right. Can't risk it." Shane licked his lips.

"So, it has to come out alive?" T-Dog asked.

"So to speak."

"How do we do that?" Glenn pondered looking into the well, before he looked to Maia who shrugged in response.

——————

They had set a sort of plan in motion, they gathered a large lump of canned ham and tied it to some wire and lured it down to see if the "swimmer" would take the bait.

"He's not going for it." Dale looked down into the well.

"Maybe 'cause a canned ham don't kick and scream when you try to eat it." T-Dog replied sarcastically.

"He's right. There's a reason the dead didn't come back to life and start raiding our cupboards." Lori agreed with T-Dog.

"We need live bait." Andrea stated before turning to Glenn.

Maia glanced up at Andrea who looked towards Glenn.

"You seriously wanna risk his life, don't you?" Maia piped up with a look of disbelief.

"We need the bait." Shane replied.

"Catch a rabbit." Maia replied sternly, she was persistent and didn't want Glenn to risk his life.

No one knew where this outburst came from, why was she so caring about Glenn all of a sudden?

She never cared before, or at least showed she did.

Glenn gave Maia a confused glance, the bandage on her nose making it extremely noticeable.

She wiped her nose carefully in order to not hurt herself anymore.

The others stayed silent.

"So? Anyone gonna speak up? We're gonna let him go down there?" Maia crossed her arms across her chest.

"We need the bait, Maia." Andrea piped up.

"Shut up, Andrea. He's a person, not bait." Maia snapped and everyone's eyes went wide.

"Why do you even care?" Andrea looked extremely offended now.

"Because he's a person, Andrea. Sorry that I have feelings and I care for someone's well being and you don't." Maia snapped and Izraella sighed and pulled Maia aside.

Glenn followed the two with his eyes, still shocked at how she acted.

What was going on with her?

"M, what the hell is going on?" Izraella whispered, confused by Maia's outburst.

"What, can I not care for a friend's well-being?" Maia whispered back.

"Why aren't you and Anthony saying anything, he's our friend?" Maia asked in a whisper-yell, glancing to see Glenn getting tied in a rope.

"M, you've been acting so different around Glenn lately, ever since the CDC there's been some awkward tension, what the hell happened back there?" Izraella asked Maia not to give any other answer but the truth.

"Nothing happened, okay? We've just spoken more." Maia replied, flailing her hands around dramatically.

"Don't bullshit me, i've never heard you once refer to Glenn as a friend, nevertheless acknowledge him. You two have something going on and i'll figure it out one way or another." Izraella pointed at Maia with a stern look and a finger that a mother would use to discipline their child.

"Iz, I'm not bullshitting. There's nothing going on, okay? Can I really not care for someone's well-being?" Maia asked, putting her hands on her hips before wiggling her nose slightly and straightening the bandage on the bridge of her nose gently.

"Now, that right there is bullshit. But i'll let it slide." Izraella pointed at Maia sternly.

"Put the goddamn finger down." Maia took Izraella's finger into her grasp and pushed it down.

"Look, just go with it, Glenn will be fine, I ain't letting him die." Izraella replied with a sigh.

———————

There was no chance Maia wanted to go through with this and she knew very well Glenn didn't want to either.

"Have I mentioned that I really like your new haircut?" Glenn spoke as he sat on the rim of the well, getting tied by Shane.

"You have a nice shaped head." He spoke nervously.

"Don't lie to the man." Izraella piped up giving Glenn a look and Shane blinked a few times before Maia gave Izraella a fist bump.

"His head looks like a dick." Maia replied and Anthony snorted.

Shane looked offended and the three put their hands up in surrender.

A few of the others were hiding small smirks in hopes to hide the fact that they wanted to laugh.

"Don't worry about it, bud." Shane replied and gave the three a glare.

"Hey, we're gonna get you out of here in one piece." Shane replied and handed Maia a piece of rope.

"Living piece. The living part is important." Glenn sighed, it was obvious he was nervous.

"You're crazy if you think we'd let you get hurt." Anthony piped up as he tied his shoe.

"Nice and slow, please." Glenn asked nervously as he got ready to go down the well.

"We got you." Andrea replied and the others all stood in a line holding a piece of the rope to pull him up and lower him down when need be.

"Oh, you people are crazy." Maggie sighed, shaking her head.

"Some of us didn't agree, but we're crazy with pride apparently." Maia sighed out, she stood behind Andrea which was the back, closest to the well.

"You want to get it out of your well or not?" Shane raised his voice to Maggie.

"Give us an eye there, Maggie." Dale stated as Maggie got closer to the well.

Maia saw Maggie shake her head towards Glenn and the way Glenn looked at her.

Maia felt stupid for letting some unknown jealousy arise in her chest.

She didn't even like Glenn, he was just her friend.

Glenn slowly lowered himself into the well, his slight whimper echoing from the well.

"Doing okay?" Maggie raised her voice going towards the well.

"Yup, doing great." Glenn's voice echoed back and Maia sighed, shaking her head before Andrea turned to look back at Maia with a slight glare.

This caused Maia to give Andrea a stink eye.

As they lowered him into the well Maggie signalled them when to lower him even lower into the well.

Maia couldn't help but be anxious for Glenn as she heard the snarls of the "swimmer" got louder.

As they all thought everything was going smoothly the part of the well that held the rope ripped out of the ground.

Glenn's scream echoed abruptly and everyone went into panic mode.

"Get it! Get it!" Lori yelled.

"Grab it!" Izraella yelled and the part flew across onto the ground causing T-Dog to dive forward and grab ahold of it.

"Don't let it get me! Get me out of here!" Glenn screamed in pure terror as it lowered him even more.

Everyone had grabbed a hold of the part and tried pulling with all their strength.

"Get it off! Get me out!" Glenns screams sounded strained as he sounded like he was struggling.

Maia was now stressed as they all tried pulling him out of the well.

"Oh, my god! Oh, my god!" Glenn's screams didn't make Maia feel any better about the situation.

The groans from the group echoed as they tried pulling him out of the well as quickly as possible.

"Shane! Guys! Get me out of here!" Glenn's yells were now struggled.

"Oh shit!" The faint curse of Glenn echoed as they still continued to pull.

Glenn repeated his yells over and over in pure horror and the group finally got a tight grasp on the rope and started pulling him up.

"Glenn!" Maia yelled as she helped Shane, Izraella, T-Dog and Anthony pull him up.

"Pull him up! Come on, pull him up!"

Glenn's head peeled out of the well and he quickly got himself onto the ground before he laid on his side.

Everyone rushed to his side.

"Are you okay?" Lori asked in concern.

Glenn laid his head on his forearm as he was almost peering at the ground.

He was panting more than anyone could imagine.

"Back to the drawing board." Dale spoke and Maia sent him an "it's too soon" look, let alone look, it was a glare.

"Says you." Glenn panted and handed Dale the rope all to realise Glenn got the rope around the "swimmer's" neck.

As Anthony and the others peered into the well, Maia quickly jogged over to Glenn.

Glenn had his hands on his knees and he panted loudly.

Maia abruptly put her hand on his chin and lifted it so he could look her in the eye.

"Are you hurt?" Maia asked in genuine concern, her eyes were wide and her heart was beating out of her chest.

"N-no, I'm not, I'm fine." Glenn stuttered as his eyes met Maia's and she examined his face and touched his arms and examined his body to see if there were any wounds.

"You're a fucking dumbass. You shouldn't allow them to dictate shit, you're a person not bait." Maia pushed his head in an annoyed manner, it was clear she had been worried.

He appreciated that she cared but he didn't understand why.

Nothing about Maia's actions made sense.

She felt the need to touch him and make sure he was okay.

Glenn sighed as he got a small lecture from Maia before she stepped back and looked at the others who were pulling the "swimmer" out of the water.

Glenn and Maia quickly made it to the rope and started helping.

They all continued to pull with the help of a horse.

As the "swimmer" came into sight, faces of disgust were made.

"It's stuck! Come on." T-Dog exclaimed, causing the others to pull harder to try and get it out of its stuck position.

The snarls of the "swimmer" were going to be the death of everyone, even the sounds it made were disgusting.

As they pulled harder the "swimmer's" body split in half and the bottom half fell back into the well.

Maia, Glenn, Shane, Izraella and Anthony were sitting on the floor whilst they were panting after trying to pull up all the weight.

"So much for no contaminated water." Anthony piped up and everyone sighed.

"We should seal off this well." Dale sighed and Izraella helped Maia off the ground.

"Yeah, probably a good idea." Shane replied.

Everyone looked at the "swimmer" grossed out, the smell reeked even more.

"What do we do about-." Izraella was cut off by T-Dog beating the "swimmer's" head in.

Everyone was either gagging or looking away.

Maggie walked away from the scene and Anthony's first instinct was to follow her to see if she was okay.

"Good thing we didn't do anything stupid like shoot it." T-Dog spoke sarcastically.

"Now that's bullshit." Maia piped up with a sigh before everyone had a look of disappointment on their faces.
