chapter two , career counselor
ALL I DID WAS TRY MY BEST THIS THE KINDA THANKS I GET?
BRUTAL, OLIVIA RODRIGO

sitting in the waiting room, all i could hear was my leg bouncing up and down. and mikes loud breathing, god it's so annoying.

luckily it ended when a lady came out, "number 27?" i got up but she repeated it again, i furrowed my eyebrows. until i realized, mike got up.

"follow me." she said when we both stood in front of her.

maybe it didn't end. todays the best day, isn't it?

humming, the counselor wasn't facing us. well, his name thing on the desk read 'steve raglan'. so steve wasn't facing us. finally he turned around with a folder in his hand, still humming that annoying tune.

"what is your deal, mike and valentina?" he said looking up and then looking down, "what are you, some kind of... head cases?" he insulted us. well, at least me. mike probably already knew.

"you keep falling asleep on the job, and arriving late. almost every day." he said looking at his folder.

"listen, i'm sorry. i've been having a hard time and it's just not easy to balance a job right now, but i need to." i explained.

he looked down at what i was guessing was my file. "miss valentina per-" he stopped before he could say my full last name. i saw a look of guilt, confusion, happiness, and madness in his eyes. to be honest it made me scared. what is he doing?

"so your parents remarried?" he asked me. "um, yeah. my mom remarried. my last name used to be emily. does it say it on there?" i asked confused. "yeah, it does." he looked down. he looked back up, why does he keep doing that?

he pursed his lips and looked over to mike. "you beat up a man in broad daylight. in front of his child." steve said.

"that was a mistake. it was a misunderstanding. i thought-" mike spoke but got cut off by steve, "just look at your employment record. tire zone, sales associate, two months, terminated. insubordination. media world, custodial staff, one week. it's like your not even trying here, yet you sit before me asking for help." he explained.

"dang" i whispered to myself, laughing quietly. earning a deadly glare from mike.

"i am just trying to figure out who you are, mr. michael sch..." he paused, looking up from his folder at mike, looking closely at him, "hmm," he hummed.

he put his folder down, "coffee?" he asked. "sorry?" mike said. "uh, would you, would you like some... some coffee? i made some coffee." he said getting up and going to the counter being me and mike.

"no." mike said confused. steve grabbed the coffee pot and looked over to me. "oh, i'm good. thank you though." i smiled.

i bent over to mike and whsipered, "you could have been more nicer. the man was just offering coffee.

he whispered too, "seems like you could use it. miss i use my job as an opportunity to have my nap time."

"excuse me? you beat up a kid in front of his dad, in front of hundreds of people. it's better then attacking somebody." i smiled and fell back into my seat.

"i'm gonna be brutally honest with you valentina and mike. given your track records, your options are going to be extremely limited."

"i'll take anything, any job you got." mike said,'i nodded my head to signal i was agreeing with him.

"no, look i get that part. it's just, you know, not that easy." he explained.

"yeah. thank you." mike said getting up and heading for the door, with me following.

"i have a job for you." he said, making us turn and look at him.

"come on, sit down." he said waving his hand, "sit, sit, sit, sit, sit."

i went to go sit in the chair closest to the door, but mike squeezed in and sat there. "are you serious?" i said looking at him. he had a little smirk on his face, but it was powerful. i looked down to him, and gave him a face that said 'i would fight you for that chair, but i don't wanna lose my chance as getting a job.'

"what is it?" i asked, mike leaning forward, while i was leaning back.

"it's a security gig." steve said.

i looked over to mike and gasped, making him look over. "maybe you can beat up another man this time, in front of his kid too! and, maybe get away with it! since you always get away with things." i said.

he rolled his eyes while steve was looking at both of us concerned. "continue." i said, crossing my leg over the other.

"okay. full disclosure, it's not great. right? high turnover. that's what we call it in the business, but you guys get to be your own boss. sort of." he paused before continuing, "and you only have to worry about one thing. keeping people out. and-and you know, and keep the place tidy."

"that's two things." me and mike said in unison.

steve stopped and looked at us, "you want the job or not?" he asked.

"how's the pay?" mike asked. "not great. but, the hours are worse." steve answered.

mike looked over to his side, tilting his head, "i can't do nights." he quietly said. "excuse me?" steve moved his body forward.

"i can't do nights." mike said dramatically. i side eyed him. am i really gonna have to work somewhere alone?

"that's such a shame." steve said. "yeah." mike agreed. "i can do it." i said, making both of them turn to me. steve smiled, "that's great."

"thank you." mike said getting up, i did the same getting up, thanking steve. "wait, uh," steve got up and handed mike a card, "in case you have a change of heart." mike took it and left, i followed behind him.

hopefully this job will be fun. i don't know anything yet. i guess it'll be a surprise.
