i. THE FELL'S

the fell family is one of the five founding families.

the fell's have the tendency of being news reporters (like logan fell and franklin fell) or doctors (like meredith fell).

ii. THE FORBES'

the forbes family, like the fell's, have a tendency of being the town sheriff (ex: sheriff william forbes and sheriff elizabeth forbes) the family has been committed to protecting the town from vampires for almost 150 years.

iii. THE GILBERT'S

the gilbert's were a rather wealthy family, who owned many properties (ex: elena's childhood home, grayson gilbert's medical office, and the family lake house).

the family was full of inventors (ex: johnathan gilbert). johnathan designed and built a series of devices that emily bennett (secretly) enchanted with magic. his inventions didn't work without the enchantments.

johnathan gilbert's most notable inventions are the gilbert watch/compass which was used to detect vampires and the gilbert ring which allowed non-supernatural wearers to be resurrected after death by supernatural means.

elena and jeremy gilbert are the last living members of the gilbert family.

iv. THE LOCKWOOD'S

the lockwood's are very rich.

due to their ancestors taking over the land that belonged to the vampires after they were sealed in the church tomb.

because of their wealth almost all mayors of mystic falls belong to the lockwood family (with the exception of rudy hopkins and matthew donovan; mystic falls' most recent mayor).

but something about the lockwoods sets them apart from the other four founding families. their bloodline contains the werewolf gene, although only a few members are known to have activated it.

as of now, the lockwood family is extinct.

v. THE SALVATORE'S

the salvatore's are the fifth and final known founding family. the family made one of their many fortunes selling lumber.

the salvatore's originally come from florence, italy (as evidenced by the florentine seal on some parts of the salvatore boarding house).

the salvatore family is known for having a bloodline of doppelgänger's, starting from their earliest known ancestor, silas (the world's first immortal man).

the salvatore's were responsible for providing vervain within the town of mystic falls.
