- GROUNDED
"you'll grow (ooh, ooh,)
once you are grounded
grounded, grounded, grounded"

MARCH 27th, 2021
selene king's kitchen
3:36 pm

"i have an idea!" selene announced proudly

currently, selene had faye as company in her kitchen. sitting down, selene's outburst caused faye to unhook her eyes from the phone and look up. selene approached carrying a bowl of fruit, finally settling it onto the island where faye was seated.

"excuse me?"

selene rolled her eyes and proceeded, "i have an idea for what we can do for spring break."

faye nodded in understanding before raising an eyebrow, "look i know you're kind of "comfortable" but i'm not made of money."

"oh hush, it's not gonna be that expensive. plus, if we get vinnie, brandon, and kara we will have a better chance of figuring out the money situation." selene decided

faye sat with the idea for a second. on one hand, getting away for break instead of being stuck in her room would be a breath of fresh air. but, getting contact of her mother, then asking for a trip along with some extra cash, wasn't exactly something she'd look forward to.

but, before faye could open her mouth in protest, selene interrupted her with a finger. a finger? yeah a finger. sitting inches away from faye's face wagging in a "no" motion.

"none of that."

faye flicked the finger out of her view, "none of what?"

"the doubt! look, at least think for a little longer. we have so many ways to work this out, i don't want you doubting it already when it's been a thought in your mind for two minutes!" faye scoffed, "sele-" but her friend gave her a look that told she wasn't having it, leaving her protests stuck in her throat.

even though faye hadn't said anything, selene froze and her previous hopeful face turned into something faye couldn't put her finger on.

"what?" faye asked curiously, selene looked her way and threw on a smile that didn't reach her eyes "uhm, i think my dads home?" she said as if it was a question.

jonathan king had to be one of the scariest men faye had ever encountered. not because he was mean or rude, in all honesty he didn't show enough of anything to know if he was an asshole. but, he carried himself as if he owned the world. in an intimidating aura that he was better than you, and regardless if he believed that, you would after being around him.

that being said, in faye's lucky case the longest she'd been around him was all of 10 minutes. so, maybe he wasn't as scary as she'd painted him to be.

suddenly the sound of the door opening shook the two girls back into reality. faye turned met selene's eyes, starting a silent conversation of "what do i do?" replied with "i don't know, just be normal!" or something along those lines.

"selene, what did i say about-" mr. king began walking through the house, his words were cut off by seeing faye seated with a apple now in between her teeth.

"oh hi! you know faye, right?" selene tried triggering faye to send a wave his way

mr. king cleared his throat, "oh yes indeed. how are you faye?" the coldness from his earlier tone turning down

"i'm doing fine, and you?" the apple was now out of her mouth and she went out of her way to try and speak more proper. she knew how much he hated improper conversations.

"same as you, i suppose. but, you should probably get home. selene has some things to get done and i don't want her having distractions." the coldness finding it's way back towards the end

"oh, of course, mr king." faye began standing

"jonathan is fine, faye."

instead of a verbal response she just nodded his way and sent an identical one to selene. she moved rather quickly to the front door, throwing on her shoes she made her way out the door and to her car.

thank the lord i took mine today. faye thought to herself as she started the car.

her home wasn't too far, soon her playlist just became background noise for her thoughts, though. as she approached her house she noticed a car in the driveway. one that didn't belong to chris. she began to think maybe it'd just been a accident or they couldn't find a place to park.

parking the car beside it, she realized it was no accident.

mom.

letting her head hit the steering wheel, the horn quickly grabbed her out of her short crisis. with a groan, she got out the car and prepared herself for her next encounter.

walking in the house she could already hear her mother's voice rambling to someone on the phone. faye kicked off her shoes with the small hope of being able to get to her room without having to face her mom.

the voice approached closer, as faye almost made it to the stairs.

"oh hold on. i'll call you back, i think my baby's home." finally coming into view her mother hung up on the phone and faye knew she wouldn't get upstairs just yet.

pulling her daughter into a tight hug, the taller woman squeezed as if she'd truly missed her.

xiomara marie carter, was a selfish woman. she'd been selfish since the day she was born and she'd probably die with that trait. the only thing worse than a selfish person is a selfish parent. faye couldn't help but feel less than number one in her mother's life. it'd been like that since she could remember. and although that was definitely her mother's most unattractive trait, her others didn't give much potential either.

"i know you weren't trying to get up them stairs without saying hello to me first." she said finally pulling back

"of course not, i just wanted to set my things down." faye gave her mom bright smile with the lie

"come come," xiomara pulled her daughters arm into the kitchen, reaching their destination, she pulled two sodas from the fridge and handed faye one.

"why are you back?" faye asked hoping the question didn't come out as rude as implied

xiomara didn't mind, instead she just gave a shrug "just thought maybe it was time to stop by. i know i work a lot, but- i don't know i guess i should just maybe not put all of my time into it."

"oh! after all these years of putting everything before your kids, work, relationships, etc.. you finally wanna grow up as a mother? right when your son is doing his first year in college and i'm about to graduate? just great! better late then never, right!" instead of going on a disrespectful ass rant, faye used the soda to drown out the words she wanted to say.

xiomara stepped forward to look faye in the face, "have you been gaining the weight back?" she asked in a polite tone while pulling at her daughter's stomach. "no shame if you have, but you know how you used to be!" she said giving a giggle.

faye swallowed and looked at her " ... how you used to be!" which probably is referring to when faye was younger, shorter, and chubbier. xiomara has always been a tall woman, now standing at 5'10 her body weight evens out "perfectly" faye had to grow into an acceptable shape for her mother. noticing the growing compliments and interest from her mom as she began changing.

disgust must've painted faye's face because xiomara stepped back and waved her off, "don't be so sensitive, you're still a beautiful girl faye." she tried nonchalantly.

faye just gave a tight lipped smile and headed back for the stairs. reaching the bottom, she decided on a question for her mother.

"when did you say you were leaving?"

xiomara came into her line of vision once again with a smile, "i didn't."

faye didn't say anything but didn't give a gesture either, she just made her way up the stairs. stepping into her room, she closed the door and stood in front of the mirror. staring at her reflection made her wonder how much of what her mother said could possibly be true.

the thick feeling of sadness made its way up her throat and the burning sensation of tears began to form. she didn't want to feel bad because of something she said.

so, she wiped her tears and laid in the middle of her floor. closing her eyes she let her thoughts wander but wouldn't allow them to get to that place.
