Lost

EVANGELINE HILL NOW DENALI was sitting on the mountain edge, swinging her legs, deep in thought.

"A penny for your thoughts?" A soft voice behind her asks. She looks behind her shoulder at a woman with wavy dark brown hair strolling towards her, Carmen.

"Just remembering my human days," Evangeline answers. Carmen sits with her.

"Can you tell me?" Carmen asks softly with a small smile, balling snow on her hand.

"It's slowly fading throughout the years, but I'm glad the most important ones are still intact," Evangeline begins, tucking a hair behind her ear, she sighs "When I was human, I had a best friend, we've known each other for years, then he admitted his feeling for me, I reciprocated" she smiles looking at Carmen who was listening intently.

"What happened?" Carmen asks.

"His family never approved of our relationship, so they made a deal. Back then, the civil war was happening, and his father would only approve of our relationship if he joined the confederacy. I told him not to, and it was against his morals and beliefs, he was stubborn, and he also wanted to have his father's approval, so he joined," Evangeline tells Carmen.

"He lied about his age, saying that he was 20, but really he was 17. We only see each other once a month. Sometimes, he just snuck out of his post to visit me at night," Evangeline continues.

"What's his name?" Carmen asks. She was curious, especially about the golden band that rested on Evangeline's ring finger. Kate is the only one who knows most about Evangeline's human life. However, Kate doesn't understand what Evangeline's lover's name is or what he even looks like. The woman has kept it a secret, reasoning that it hurts too much to remember. This was the first time she was opening up to Carmen.

"I rather not say," Evangeline looked at Carmen apologetically. The woman just nodded understandingly.

"Wherever he is now, I hope he's at peace," Evangeline adds, smiling at the blue sky.

Carmen wraps her arm around the girl, rubbing her hand comfortably on Evangeline's shoulder, knowing that the love of her life has already passed. Evangeline became immortal. Her lover remained human.

"Do you have a photo of him?" Carmen asks, placing her head on Evangeline's shoulder.

"I have kept it safe for as long as I can. It's the only thing that has kept me sane for the past decades," Evangeline sighs.

"I love him so much, until now, it never faded, only grew," Evangeline adds with a small smile on her lips.

"The ones that love us never truly leave us. You can always find him here," Carmen says, patting her chest where her undead heart resides.

"Do you think they're happy?" Evangeline asks, looking back at the sky-minutes until the sun sets.

"They are, knowing that you are also happy," Carmen tells her with a smile.

"We should head back," Evangeline says, standing up from her place and offering Carmen a hand to take.

"Eleazar must've been annoyed that I left him with the three girls. You know how they get when they're bored," Carmen tells her with a laugh, taking Evangeline's hand and removing the snowflakes that have fallen from her hair.

"I know, they made him dress up," Evangeline laughs. She, too, has been a victim of the three's boredom.
