chapter forty || 🎬🤍🦢

Amelie had gotten dropped back home by Sam an hour ago. They had gotten back to LA a while before, but Amelie had put her head through the centre console when they were passing a mcdonald's and gave him her best puppy dog eye, which made him shake his head, but still drive into the drive thru.

Now, she was lying on Carmens bed, staring up at the ceiling with her hands crossed on her stomach. The smile that never left her lips when she was in Utah was now transformed into a frown. Carmen was trying to curl her hair and almost crying when it fell out in less than a minute.

"Do you think I'm an idiot?" Amelie asked after a moment, her mind wandering to the fact she had been nonstop texting Callum for the past five days, but thankfully, Carmen didn't know that.

Carmen shrugged, wrapping her hair around the wand, "You're a stupid fuck, but... I don't think you're an idiot. You know?"

"Yeah..." She mumbled.

A silence washed over the room, the only sound echoing the room was Carmen cursing every a few seconds.

When she put the curler down in a rage induced fit, Amelie sat up and stared at her, "If I tell you something will you scream at me?"

Carmen slowly stood up, very very confused on what she meant. She looked to the side before looking at Amelie, "Oh, God. What did you do?"

Amelie anxiously bit on her bottom lip, "I agreed to go out with Cal later..."

Carmen physically recoiled at the statement, "Have you lost your mind."

Ams sighed, suddenly reminded of Colby saying the same thing days ago. She fiddled with the small teddy bear on Carmens bed, "He wanted to talk. Tell me his side — I owe him that."

"No," Her friend said, putting her hand out to stop Amelie from saying whatever she was going to say, "You don't owe him fuck all."

"I up and left a week later. We never even officially broke up. I just aired him."

   "Good."

"Nothings gonna happen!" She sighed, "I told him nothings gonna happen, and he said he didn't want anything."

"He's a man!" She shouted, "They always want something."

"Carmen, I swear. Nothing is going to happen." She promised. She was sure nothing would happen, she wouldn't allow it. Carmen, however, wasn't convinced, "I do not like him like that. Not anymore."

Carmen didn't look like she believed her, "I love you more than anything, but if you go back to him after everything,.. I will kill you."

"Why are you always threatening to kill me?"

"Because sometimes it's for the greater good."

Amelie sighed as Carmen sat beside her, "Nothing is going to happen. I'm not gonna have to get committed — again. He's just a guy."

"He's just a guy." Carmen shouted, "I've been saying this since we were teenagers." She grabbed Amelie and pressed a hard kiss to her cheeks, "I am so proud of you."

Amelie laughed, her eyes pinching closed, "You are not well!"

"No, I am!" She stood up and practically danced around the room, making Amelie laugh, "This is the best day of my life. She's healed!"

The shouting attracted Riley into the room, "What the hell is wrong with you?" She asked when she noticed the massive smile on Carmens face.

"She's over him!" She pointed at Amelie who was trying — and failing to keep her smile hidden.

Riley's face dropped, "Oh, no. I need to update the groupchat." She huffed.

"Not him, idiot." Carmen grabbed both of Carmens shoulders, "Callum! She called him just a guy."

    "You're lying!"

Carmen shook her head and Riley began to join her in jumping up and down.

"Why are we jumping!!" Rue asked, coming into the room, joining them both cluelessly.

    "He's just a guy!"

It was very awkward to say the least. Amelie sat there, twirling the straw in her drink while Callum was staring down at the table. The only conversation that had passed between the two was small talk and Amelie had always hated small talk she thought it was for losers.

He had ordered for them when they walked into the small bar and Amelie was happy that she didn't have to tell him her drink, seeing as he remembered what she had been drinking for the past five years she legally could and the past eight years when alcohol had been introduced into their friend group.

She coughed, bringing a hand up to her mouth before clearing her throat, "Have you ever seen the notebook?" She asked, deciding to break the tension talking about something that she would talk about everyone with.

"Uh, no. It's not really my style, you know?"

"Oh!" She said, biting the tip of her index finger, looking at him bewildered, "I take it you haven't seen 'How to lose a guy in ten days'?" He looked at her like she talking nonsense. Her face dropped, "The one where they like secretly conspire to get together for their own gain, but the other doesn't know? The yellow dress? Cal, come on. I bought the yellow dress when I was, like, sixteen."

"I'm so sorry." He laughed as Amelie scoffed, jokingly looking him up and down.

"You're such a freak that's actually not right." She took a sip of her drink, "I've converted many people to be romcom lovers and I'll do the same to you."

He laughed, "Who have you converted?"

"Carmen, who hates the idea of love and doesn't believe in it. Sam, who said he hated romcoms and then I made him watch like seven in one night and he says he hated them, but I know he doesn't. And, uh, Rory of course."

His eyebrows shot up, "Sam? Are you two... Y'know?"

"No! God, no!"

"God, no?"

She shook her head, "Not like that, it's just— It's complicated."

He shrugged, "I don't think it should be complicated. I think if you like someone you should go with it."

"Like you did with my neighbour?" She asked, cocking an eyebrow. She didn't mean for the words to come out so once they registered in her head, her jaw dropped.

He kissed his teeth and closed his eyes, "I deserve that."

"You deserve worse, but..." She sent him a tight lipped smile, "Look, uh... I'm not gonna sit here and make a fool of myself, so I'm just gonna start talking and if I don't stop—" He went to talk, but she put her hand up, silencing him, "Don't interrupted me. Sorry. Jesus."

"I'm just gonna say my side and then you can apologise and we can go our separate ways and only see each other is passing or at parties and shit. Yeah?" She continued and he nodded, leaning back further in his seat, "Okay, um, actually you go first..."

"Look, I was a bitch to you at the end of our relationship and I'm not gonna act like I wasn't. What I did was unforgivable and I wouldn't forgive me if I were you." He said and Amelie could see the truth in his words, "I'm so sorry. I can't even put it into words how sorry I am. I've been planning this for ages and I still can't express how sorry I am, but I need you to know I am. And I'll understand if you don't want to be my friend, but I do miss you, and I'm sorry."

Amelie's eyes teared up, but she refused to let them fall, "I forgive you. Like, actually. I'm not just saying that. I can't understand why you did it — trust me, I've spent way too long trying to justify it, but I did completely leave after it happened when I think we should have talked it through. I was just so upset and if I had seen you I think I would have throttled you." She laughed, "I spent, like, a year and a half trying to figure it all out, but now? I don't think I care anymore. What happened, happened and neither of us can change that. But I accept your apology, and I think we can try and be friends because I miss you too."

After a long minute of silence and an unintentional staring contest, Amalie decided to break the ice, like she always did, "If you were anyone else I don't think I could justify doing the shit I did after we broke up. You're not the love of my life—"

"Hey!"

"And I think I've finally accepted that." She chuckled, "I cannot see myself walking up the isle and you being there waiting for me."

His jaw dropped, but he laughed anyway, "I can't see you in a white dress either."

   "Take that back now!"
