Alexis, Crown Princess of Freygallia, Duchess of Arcadia (Alexis Giselle Augusta Coralie ev MacLeod ye Pond; born 28 November 1987) is the heir apparent to the Freygallian throne, as the elder child of King Augustus XI.  If she ascends to the throne as expected, she would be Freygallia's eleventh queen regnant (after Sarina-Isolde, Elspeth I, Livia Dorothea, Augusta, Helene, Alexis I, Elspeth II, Tallulah Kristiana, Alexis II, and Gemma-Coralie) and the first since 1912.

Her inheritance is secured by Freygallia's 1561 Act of Succession — the first law in history to not only adopt royal absolute primogeniture, but to also adopt the same succession rules for the Freygallian nobility.  Elspeth II (who was only known as Princess Elspeth at the time), the only legitimate heir of the then reigning King Finis, is the one who advocated for this change before her ascension to the throne and is the one who actually coined the term "primogeniture" during her appeal to the Etduskhunja in 1561.

EARLY LIFE

Crown Princess Alexis was born on 28 November 1987 at 18:13 CET at Vahlja Palace in the Kyrkahs village of Enkyli, Enkyli County, Freygallia, and is the elder child and daughter of King Augustus XI and Queen Tabetha.  She is 11 minutes older than her identical twin sister, Princess Amelia, and is a member of the House of Pond.  Born as a princess of Freygallia, as well as the firstborn child of the reigning King and Queen, she was designated crown princess from the time of her birth 11 minutes before her sister.  Upon the public announcement of her and her sister's birth, three 21-gun salutes (2 for Alexis and 1 for Amelia) were fired from three places within the Kingdom of Freygallia: Kruunu Battery at Enkyli Palace in the capital of Enkyli, Demonit Juosta Air Base in Freygallia's northernmost city of Hiljaisuus, and Aurynko Battery at Aurynghon Castle in the country's southernmost city of Bryo.  The basic salute is 21 rounds (which is what Princess Amelia received in each of the three locations).  However, with Alexis's status as a future Queen, an extra 21 rounds (for a total of 42) were added to the normal salute for the Crown Princess in each location.  Her and her sister's names and titles were announced on 1 December 1987 by their reigning father King Augustus XI at a Council of State meeting.

Alexis's given names honour various relatives.  Her first name comes primarily from her great-great-great-great-grandmother Alexis II (reign: 1828-1878), Freygallia's 9th queen regnant, as well as ancestress Alexis I (reign: 1525-1550), Freygallia's 5th queen regnant.  Her other names honour her paternal grandmother Giselle Romilly (1921-2011), queen consort of Freygallia from 1943 to 1981; her father King Augustus XI and other various relatives and ancestors (all firstborn children in the Freygallian royal family are given the names Augustus or Augusta as one of their given names); and Gemma-Coralie (reign: 1899-1912), Freygallia's 10th queen regnant.

Alexis and her sister were christened on 27 March 1988 in the Royal Chapel of the Royal Palace of Enkyli in Enkyli, Freygallia.  Alexis's godparents were Princess Sharon of Freygallia, Duchess of Karn (her paternal aunt); Prince Finis of Freygallia, Duke of Tivoli (her father's paternal cousin); Queen Margrethe II of Denmark; Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands (the then-Queen of the Netherlands: 1980-2013); King Harald V of Norway (the then-Crown Prince of Norway); and King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden. The Crown Princess and her sister were confirmed in the autumn of 2002 at Saint Hildegard's Lutheran Church in the town of Arcworth, which is on the border of the Freygallian provinces of Arcadia and Leadworth.

Alexis is one of only four female heirs apparent in the world, the other three being Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden; Catharina-Amalia of the Netherlands, Princess of Orange; and Princess Elisabeth of Belgium, Duchess of Brabant.

EDUCATION

From 1989-1993, Alexis and her identical twin sister began their education at the Rainbow Garden Preschool Centre (Old Freygallian: Rheygynbu Zyhreduin Ezyskuulu Sehntyr) in the Kyrkahs village of Enkyli, Freygallia.  She and her sister then began their first year of primary education at the public Gemma-Coralie ev Saxe-Coburg-Gotha ye Pond Primary School (Old Freygallian: Gemma-Coralie ev Saxe-Coburg-Gotha ye Pond Grunnskuulu) in the Hyvaa district of Enkyli, where they attended from 1993-1999.  In the spring of 1999, the Freygallian royal family notified the public that starting in the autumn of that year, Crown Princess Alexis and her sister would transfer to the private International School of Enkyli (Old Freygallian: Internazsjonell Skuulu ev Enkyli) reportedly because their parents wanted them to gain a more diversified knowledge base.  Their cousins, Princess Jupiter and Prince Skyler, were to transfer to Enkyli's public Zokla Park Secondary School (Old Freygallia: Zokla Park Gymnazieskuulu).

In the autumn of 2004, the Crown Princess and her sister were enrolled at Fettes College, a private co-educational independent boarding and day school in Edinburgh, Scotland.  They graduated and each received their international baccalaureate in the spring of 2006.

Alexis spent her summer holidays gaining additional foreign language experience with trips to countries such as South Korea and Spain.

Continued studies

During the 2006-07 academic year, the Crown Princess studied Swedish at Uppsala University in Uppsala, Sweden.

In the autumn term of 2007, Alexis followed a specially designed programme in order to gain a general insight into the workings of the Etduskhunja (the Freygallian Parliament) and the Freygallian Government.

United Nations experience

In the spring of 2008, Crown Princess Alexis began academic studies in Political Science and History at Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut in the United States.  In conjunction with her stay, the Crown Princess completed two periods of work experience at the United Nations in New York (June and September 2012) as well as one at the Freygallian Embassy in Washington, D.C. in May 2009.

In the autumn of 2010, Crown Princess Alexis completed courses in conflict resolution and international peace-building at the University of Oslo in Oslo, Norway.

In the spring of 2011, the Crown Princess took courses in European Union Politics and International Relations at the National University of Enkyli in Enkyli, Freygallia.  Freygallia is not part of the European Union but does have a working relationship with it.  Alexis studied this subject matter in order to gain a better understanding of how the EU works and Freygallia's various interactions with it.

Freygallian Government Offices

In autumn 2011, the Crown Princess followed a study programme at the offices of the Freygallian Government.  During this time, she visited the "Freygallian Style" exhibition in Seoul, South Korea and the southern coasts of Greece in connection with her father's Pearl Jubilee.

In spring 2012, Crown Princess Alexis completed a study programme at FIDA, the Freygallian International Development Agency, and spent time in countries such as Rwanda and Tanzania.

During this time, she also continued with her official engagements.  In autumn 2012, she competed an internship with the Freygallian Trade Council in Brussels, Belgium and Sydney, Australia.

Basic Military Education

In 2013, the Crown Princess continued her education on Freygallian trade and industry with a study and work experience programme in Freygallian agriculture and forestry, as well as completing basic military training at FREYINT (the Freygallian Armed Forces International Centre).

The Crown Princess also studied at the Freygallian National Defence University in Enkyli in 2014, focusing on Political Science, International Relations and Conflict Resolution.

In 2014, Crown Princess Alexis participated in a state visit to Ireland, and visited the United Arab Emirates and Poland with official Freygallian delegations.  She also visited the Paris branch of the UN, made field trips to various companies in Freygallia and continued with her official engagement duties.

Social Science studies

During the autumn of 2015, the Crown Princess spent a month in Japan where she followed the work of the Freygallian Embassy in Tokyo as well as travelled in order to gain insights in the Japanese community.  Crown Princess Alexis also continued her studies in Social Science in 2015.

Diplomatic studies

In September 2016, the Crown Princess embarked upon the diplomat programme at the Freygallian Ministry for Foreign Affairs.  The programme lasts for one academic year and includes lectures, seminars and group work.  Crown Princess Alexis also took part in field trips to various different authorities and institutions.

Language skills

The Crown Princess speaks fluent English, Old Freygallian, French, German, Greek, Spanish and Swedish.  She also speaks intermediate-level Arabic, Czech, Hungarian, Japanese, Russian and Slovak.  Alexis can read and understand Hebrew, Korean, Norwegian and Portuguese.  She also has some knowledge of Freygallian Sign Language, Dutch and Italian.

Crown Princess Alexis is considered to be, and has been described as, "the most skilled royal in terms of linguistic proficiency in the number of languages studied."

CONSTITUTIONAL STATUS

The Constitution of Freygallia was altered in 1561 (going into effect on 1 January 1562) to introduce absolute primogeniture, ensuring that the crown would pass to the eldest child regardless of gender.  This was the first law in history to explicitly do this.  This would not happen with another monarchy for another 418 years, when Sweden adopted royal absolute primogeniture with its 1979 Act of Succession (going into effect on 1 January 1980).  At the time of Freygallia's 1561 constitutional amendment, Princess Elspeth (later Queen Elspeth II) was the then-reigning King Finis's only legitimate heir and she used her position to persuade the parliament to amend the Freygallian law of succession, being the one to coin the term "primogeniture" in a move that has been described by historians as "one of the greatest power-plays by any heir presumptive in history."

Crown Princess Alexis has thus been first in the line of succession since birth.  Because of the long-adopted reform, her and her sister Princess Amelia's statuses as first and second (respectively) would not have been affected by the birth of a younger brother, which never happened.  Alexis and Amelia have remained the only children of King Augustus XI and Queen Tabetha.

Crown Princess Alexis is expected to become Freygallia's eleventh female monarch since her great-great-grandmother Queen Gemma-Coralie, who reigned over Freygallia from 1899 until her shocking assassination on New Year's Day 1912.

Along with her parents, sister, and aunt Princess Sharon — but unlike her cousins Princess Jupiter, Prince Skyler, Princess River, and other relatives — Crown Princess Alexis is a member of the Freygallian Royal House.  The family belongs to the House of Pond.

PUBLIC LIFE

Alexis's declaration of majority took place in the Hall of State at the Royal Palace of Enkyli in on 28 November 2005.  As of the day she turned 18, she became eligible to act as Head of State when the King is not in country.  Alexis made her first public speech on this occasion.  Located on the dais in the background was the same red and gold throne on which her father was seated at his coronation, in actual use from 1730 and up until this ceremony.

As heir apparent to the throne, Alexis is a working member of the Freygallian Royal Family, with her own agenda of official engagements.  She attends the regular Advisory Council on Foreign Affairs and the information councils with Government ministers headed by the King, and steps in as a temporary regent (Rēgénz) when needed.

The Crown Princess participates in state and official visits, the Opening of the Parliamentary Session, celebrating Freygallia's National Day, and official dinners.

Crown Princess Alexis was given her own household in January 2015.  It is headed by her private secretary, and serves to coordinate the official engagements of The Crown Princess.

International aid work

In spring 2015, Crown Princess Alexis traveled extensively, including a trip to New Zealand in connection with the "Freygallian Style" exhibition, and a trip to Italy to attend the 2015 World Exposition in Milan.

The Crown Princess also travelled to Nepal and Ethiopia to study international aid efforts in these countries.  In October 2015, she visited Israel with Xander Hutton, the Freygallian Minister for Trade and Industry, in order to promote relations between Freygallia and Israel.  Crown Princess Alexis participated in the Freygallian Business Seminar and Freygallia Day celebrations in Tel Aviv during a historic visit, which was organized by the Freygallian Embassy and Freygallian Trade Council in Tel Aviv.  Alexis also visited historic sights such as the Mahmoudiya Mosque, the Yitzhak Rabin Center, and Tel Aviv's Independence Hall.  This was the first official Royal visit from Freygallia to Israel ever, since the Declaration of the Establishment of the State of Israel in 1948.

International work with peace

The Crown Princess is regularly involved in issues related to crisis and conflict management, aid work and international peacekeeping activities.

UN Ambassador for Global Goals

In January 2016, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon appointed Crown Princess Alexis as a member of the Sustainable Development Goals Advocates for Agenda 2030.  The Crown Princess is one of 17 ambassadors in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Advocacy Group with the task to promote the UN's Sustainable Development Goals — Agenda 2030 — in various ways (2016-present).  Alexis primarily works with issues concerning health (goal 3), education (goal 4), gender equality (goal 5), and consumption and production (goal 12).

Other activities

In February 2016, the Crown Princess made an official visit to Guatemala where she toured ancient Mayan ruins and hiked the famous Pacaya volcano, as well as visited projects supported by the Our Story Foundation, such as the Escuela Reina Tabetha.

In June 2016, she paid a four-day official visit to Rome where she attended an Italian-Freygallian serata arranged by the Freygallian Chamber of Commerce, the Freygallian Trade Council and the Freygallian Embassy.  The visit to Rome also included events with the Freygallian Club in Rome, a visit to Vatican City and attendance at a mass in St Peter's Basilica followed by an audience with Pope Francis, and visits to historic sights such as the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, and the Castel Sant'Angelo.

In December 2016, Crown Princess Alexis paid an official visit to Sweden as an invited guest of friend Crown Princess Victoria and her husband, Prince Daniel, for the Nobel Prize festivities in Stockholm.

In July 2017, the Crown Princess made an official visit to Kenya where she visited the United Nations Office at Nairobi.  Being from a country that is both highly developed and environmentally friendly, Crown Princess Alexis spoke in front of congregations of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (otherwise known as UN-Habitat) and the United Nations Environment Programme (otherwise known as UNEP or UN Environment), which are both headquartered at the UN office in Nairobi.  She spoke on the issues of sustainable urbanization, economic sustainability, and wildlife protection, among other related topics.

Later that same month, Alexis, along with her father King Augustus XI, as well as other members of the Freygallian Royal Family, hosted King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain at the Royal Palace of Enkyli for a three-day state visit that consisted of various state dinners, galas and engagements to mark the 100th anniversary of the official establishment of Freygallia-Spain diplomatic relations in 1917.

Crown Princess Alexis is a member of the Honorary Board of the International Paralympic Committee.

THE CROWN PRINCESS ALEXIS'S FUND

The Crown Princess Alexis's Fund was set up in 2007 and is run as a part of Radiohjylpa, the fundraising branch of Frey Television and Frey Radio.  The fund's aim is to provide support for animal conservation, children and youth creative therapies, as well as support for leisure and recreational activities for children and young people with functional disabilities or chronic illnesses.

The Crown Princess Alexis's Fund's means mainly derive from donations by the public, but large companies such as Müller, Freybank and A&A Friygahlja are constant sponsor partners.  Additional support comes from The Association of Freygallian Bakers & Confectioners who every year arrange a national "pack cake week" during which the participating cafés and bakeries give 2.50 FYK per sold pack pastry and 10 FYK per sold pack cake to the fund.  The result of this fund-raising drive is usually presented to Alexis herself on her name day on 18 May every year; in 2017, the total amount was 300,000 FYK.  Congratulatory and memorial cards are also issued by Radiohjylpa benefitting the fund, a simple way to pay respects and do a good deed in one act.  In 2016, The Crown Princess Alexis Fund raised a total of 5.6 million FYK.

Every year, Alexis visits one or several clubs or projects that have been granted money.  These visits are not announced via the official royal diary but kept private; instead Frey Television often accompanies her and airs short programs from these visits at some time during the year.

LEISURE PURSUITS

The Crown Princess enjoys horseback riding and has owned horses (which were stabled at the Royal Stables).  She enjoys skiing as well as ice skating, and is interested in music, theatre, dance and art.  She also has a knack for baking, which lead her to competing on an episode of the celebrity edition of the popular Freygallian television program Bake or Break.  She also enjoys reading, sailing, swimming, tennis and archery.

Alexis is also a skilled photographer and occasionally documents her work on her personal Instagram account @crown_princess_alexis.

PERSONAL LIFE

Crown Princess Alexis for the November 2016 issue of Elle Freygallia
__________

The Crown Princess's first boyfriend was James-David Smithfield.  They met in the mid-2000s when they were both attending boarding school at Fettes College in Edinburgh, Scotland.  They became friends and had started socializing in the same circles by the time their romance developed.  They kept in touch after graduating from Fettes in 2006 and pursued a long-distance relationship for over a year.  When Alexis moved to the United States in 2008 to study and recover from her panic disorder, Smithfield moved with her across the Atlantic and settled in New York.  In September 2010, Alexis's relationship with Smithfield was confirmed in an interview with her at Expo 2010.  The relationship ended in early 2011.

Relationship with Jakob Christopher Smyth
The Crown Princess was in a relationship with Freygallian professional tennis player Jakob Christopher Smyth from 2012 to 2016.  The two were first spotted together in April 2012, chatting as they walked along the Vestriarzir Bridge over the Evyntyr River in central Enkyli.  However, it wasn't until 5 August 2012 that the couple's relationship was confirmed.  When Smyth defeated Great Britain's Andy Murray in the men's singles tennis tournament final to win the gold medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, Smyth rushed over to the sidelines where Alexis had been watching and kissed her for everyone to see.  The Crown Princess had no issue and happily returned the public display of affection before Murray walked over to congratulate Smyth on the hard fought win.  Alexis and Smyth then began appearing in public more frequently together, Smyth even accompanying the Crown Princess to the weddings of Princess Madeleine and Prince Carl Philip of Sweden on 8 June 2013 and 13 June 2015, respectively.  In June 2014, the couple began living together in the affluent Rhakao district of Enkyli, which was confirmed by the palace.  In late 2015, engagement rumors began to circulate, speculating that a proposal was imminent.  However, on 18 June 2016, it was reported that the couple had parted ways and that Smyth no longer lived in what was once their shared home.  No explanation was ever given as to the reason for the sudden break-up, and both the Crown Princess and Smyth have been reluctant to comment on the matter.

In a popular personal report called Three Days with Alexis, which profiled her work during a three-day period that aired on FTV2 in November 2016, Alexis did comment on criticism and prying directed towards her and Smyth.  "Many unfair and baseless things are written in the press. I understand that there is speculation and curiosity, but what happened between Jakob and myself is our business."  Alexis also gave her opinion that happiness is important, and that in these modern times it is not so much about background and social status but about two people who have to co-exist with one another.  She said that if they are not happy and cannot trust each other completely, it is impossible for things to work.

Mental health
Crown Princess Alexis has what is known as panic disorder, which is an anxiety disorder involving panic attacks.  In 2006, it was officially established that Alexis suffered from the disorder, but this was not confirmed until the next year.

Alexis had planned to study at the National University of Enkyli but, after suffering a panic attack during the state visit from France in June 2007, media speculation intensified. So, the Royal Court decided to confirm what was already thought.

After a press release from the Royal Court in October 2007 announced that Alexis did indeed suffer from panic disorder, she moved to the United States where she received professional treatment and studied at Yale University.  By making this drastic decision, Alexis lived an anonymous life while getting professional help and recovering without having to worry about media speculations or if people were recognizing her on the streets.

In July 2010, Alexis said: "It was a weird time. This type of mental health issue is difficult, not just for the person that personally struggles with it but also for the people who are close to and care about them.  Today, I'm a bit better. Not where I'd like to be, but I'll get there."

In November 2012, the book I, Alexis came out, speaking further about her anxiety disorder.  Alexis said: "It felt like a rollercoaster. I had these periods of time where I was completely fine, and then all of a sudden it was like someone had flipped a switch . . . Maybe it's because of the life I was born into, or maybe it's because of my own moments of self-doubt. There are a lot of things that are expected of me, I understand that. And I don't wish to change any of it. But a lot of my life has been laid out for me and it has felt like it is being controlled by others which, to some extent, is somewhat true. I have come to terms with the reality that there are some things that I cannot change given my circumstance. However, there are other things that I have not quite made peace with, yet."  She further said that "I want my country to feel that I will be a competent leader for them one day. But I also want everyone to understand that I, just as everyone else, am a flawed human being. Anyone is going to become stressed when put under a microscope . . . In any case, I am getting better as the days go on. With the knowledge and experience I have garnered through this, I hope I can help others who are going through the same."

SUCCESSION TO THE FREYGALLIAN THRONE

The line of succession to the Freygallian throne consists of people entitled to become head of state of Freygallia.

The line of succession to the Freygallian throne is determined by the Act of Succession (Old Freygallian: Akt ev zukksess), originally approved by the Parliament (Old Freygallian: Etduskhunja) assembled in Enkyli and King Augustus I in 1020.  (Freygallia has what is considered "the world's oldest written constitution.")

In 1562, the Etduskhunja introduced absolute primogeniture, meaning that the eldest child of the monarch, regardless of gender, is first in line of succession.  The change entered into force on 1 January 1562, making Freygallia the first country to adopt absolute primogeniture.  The Freygallian crown had previously (since its creation in 1019) descended according to male-preference primogeniture, meaning that male heirs always took preference over their sisters.  Though the change officially occurred on 1 January 1562, it did not actually take affect until 1706 (144 years later), when Tallulah Kristiana was the first born child of the reigning King Sebastian V (between 1562 and 1706, male heirs had always been born first).  Tallulah Kristiana later became Queen of Freygallia in 1730.  It would not be until the late 20th century that another country finally adopted the same policy (when Sweden adopted absolute-primogeniture in 1980).  This was 418 years after Freygallia had officially adopted the policy in 1562.

Only legitimate descendants of the reigning monarch and the reigning monarch's siblings and their legitimate descendants can be in line to the throne.

A person is deprived of his or her rights to the crown if he or she marries without the consent of the monarch (or the consent of those exercising the monarch's powers). The lost right may be re-established by the monarch (or by those exercising the monarch's powers) in the event of parliamentary agreement.
