Today's lesson is Emotional self-care.

What is emotional self-care?
Emotional self-care means to become aware of, and identify, what you are feeling, and then allow yourself to lean into the feelings in a way that honors yourself and your emotions. We can try to ignore, deny, and suppress our emotions, but eventually they come out, one way or another.

It is also the act of nurturing and tending to your inner feelings and emotions.

In today’s stressful world, caring for your whole self, including your emotional life, is more important than ever! Nurturing your emotions can help you decrease stress, calm your nervous system, cope with tough situations, and boost your mood.

Bubble baths, manicures and massages might be the first things that come to mind when you think about self care, and there is an entire industry devoted to selling us products for this reason. But to truly care for yourself means nurturing your whole self, including your inner life and emotions.

“Emotional self-care is important because just like we take care of our physical and our mental health, we need to take care of our emotions,” says Genarda Pugh, LCPC.  “When we take care of our emotions, we allow ourselves to be be able to honor our feelings as they play an important part in who were and how we perceive the world and what’s going on in and around us. Emotions can guide how we behave and respond to people, situations, and events. Lastly, when we practice emotional self-care it allows us to be better be able to emotionally regulate and have improved self-control.”

As usual some techniques on taking care of yourself emotionally.

Take a few deep breaths, especially before expressing your feelings.

Learn to say No and serve yourself first.
(I used to feel bad when saying No to others. Because of this, it was very easy for people to hurt me. I used to think saying no to others and thinking about yourself first was wickedness. It is not. It is caring for your emotions. )

Protect your energy from others.

Create boundaries that feel good to set and encourage others to do the same.

Stop over-explaining yourself to others.

Reserve the word Sorry only for those moments when you’re truly sorry.

Call on others for help when you start to feel overwhelmed.
(I know it may seem difficult. I always thought I was weak whenever I thought about asking for help but it is not. Just talking to someone you trust takes a huge burden off of you. )

Accept compliments without argument or pushback, just a simple Thank You.

Experience your emotions without judgment, guilt, or embarrassment.

Give yourself the grace to try again when moments don’t go as planned, acceptance of yourself as you are is so important.
