CHAPTER ONE - THE KARASUNO HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL CLUB

(Flashback)

Five prodigies were gathered in a circle at Jindai's gym. The only one missing was a certain black haired male.

"From here on, we're rivals. Next time I see you will be at the high school Inter-High and Spring Tournament." A red head informed.

"Well, that's true. But we don't have to go at each others throats so quickly." A blonde said.

"It's just a coincidence that we all parted ways." A purple haired male added.

"Coincidence? Wrong. The number of schools with powerhouse teams are very limited. However, none of us thought even for a second to go to the same school as another." The red head started off as everyone looked at him.

"In the first place, we despise being rounded up into one nickname, The Inhumane Players. If we face off against each other, we are sure to see who is superior. We each feel that 'there is nobody above me.' and to prove that, we cannot help feeling a need to curtail everyone else. That is not logic, it's instinct." The red head finished.

"Well, you got a point there." The blonde agreed.

"Of course." A dark blue haired male also agreed. "I won't deny that."

"You always know what to say. No surprise there." A green haired male stated.

"Though, I'm sure Shiro-chin wouldn't understand." The purple haired male pointed out.

"No... What he aims for is completely different, but I am certain that Rei will join this battle. He has not found all of his answers yet. Still, it seems that he has made up his mind... on being determined to not budge from his style of volleyball."

(End Flashback)

A BLACK-HAIRED MALE WALKED through the gates of Karasuno High. He was wearing a white collared shirt with Karasuno's black gakuran over it. His black school bag was over his right shoulder. His crystal blue eyes were reading a light novel that was in his hand. He easily passed by the other students, going unnoticed.

"Sawamura... here." Kiyoko, Karasuno's manager, informed as she handed the captain a small batch of papers. "New member registrations."

Daichi chuckled with a bit of disappointment. "Not that many, huh? I was hoping for a lot more, too."

"Kiyoko-san, you're beautiful as always!" Tanaka cried out, completely off topic as usual.

Daichi's eyes scanned the forms. Tsukishima Kei, Yamaguchi Tadashi, Hinata Shoyo, Kageyama Tobio, and Oshiro Rei.

"Seems like the King of the Court has joined us." Daichi stated.

"What?!" His two teammates shouted, looking over to see that their captain was right. While Sugawara and Tanaka gushed over the fact that the King of the Court has enrolled at Karasuno, Daichi looked at one specific form.

"Oshiro Rei..." Daichi thinks to himself. "Where have I heard that name before?"

Rei entered Class 1-5, sitting down next to a blonde haired girl who turned towards him and shrieked at his sudden appearance. "Can I help you?" He asked.

"W-When did you get here?" The blonde haired girl questioned.

"I've been here the whole time." Rei said in a bored tone. "I'm Oshiro Rei. But you can just call me Rei, if you want. I don't mind."

"I could've sworn he wasn't there before..." The blonde thought. "I-I'm Yachi Hitoka! Y-You can just call me Hitoka I-I guess..."

Throughout the day, Rei got to know Yachi a bit better, and soon enough, she was able to calm down in his presence. After school was over, Rei said goodbye to Yachi as he went to change into a black tank top and gray shorts for volleyball practice. He entered the gym to find a black haired male and an orange haired male already there.

"Excuse me..." Rei said, making the two males flinch at the sound of a new voice. "Are you two here for the volleyball club as well?"

"When did you get here?" The orange haired male asked.

"I was here the whole time." Rei replied.

"Don't mind him. I'm Kageyama Tobio, first-year." The black haired male introduced himself.

"Hinata Shoyo, first-year!" The orange haired male said.

"Oshiro Rei, also a first-year." Rei stated. He looked over towards Kageyama. "I thought you looked familiar. You went to Kitagawa Daiichi, did you?"

"Huh? Yeah..." Kageyama replied.

"You know Kageyama too? Did you play against him?" Hinata asked.

"No. I've only heard rumors about him." Rei responded.

"What junior high did you attend, Oshiro?" Kageyama questioned.

"Hmm? I went to Jindai." Rei answered.

"Jindai Junior High? That's a powerhouse school!" Kageyama thought. "What's someone like him doing at Karasuno?"

The three first years heard voices outside of the gym. "The first setter of Kitagawa is on our team?" A voice said outside.

"But he's totally cocky."

"Don't try and intimate him, okay?"

"I-I wouldn't do anything like that."

Hinata ended up challenging Kageyama to a match. The vice principal came in and as Kageyama and Hinata were doing their match, his wig fell off. "He was wearing a wig?" Kageyama questioned.

"You just noticed?" Rei muttered, still holding his blank gaze.

"Everyone at the opening ceremony could tell." Hinata added.

"You guys! Shut up!" Tanaka whispered between his laughs.

"Tanaka, you shut up, too." Sugawara whispered to Tanaka.

Moments passed as both Kageyama and Hinata were thrown out of the gym and were banned from activities until they could act like teammates.

"Uh... Hello?" Rei said, making Daichi, Tanaka, and Sugawara flinch, realizing that he was still there.

"Oh, I apologize for not introducing myself." Daichi said. "I'm Sawamura Daichi, your captain. But you can just call me Daichi."

"I'm Oshiro Rei. It's nice to meet you, Daichi-san." Rei greeted, bowing in respect.

"My name is Sugawara Koushi. But please just call me Suga." Sugawara stated.

"And I'm Tanaka Ryunosuke! But you can call me Tanaka-senpai!" Tanaka exclaimed.

"I think just Tanaka-san will do just fine." Rei stated as a lightning bolt struck through Tanaka.

"What position do you play?" Daichi asked.

"I was the libero in junior high. So that's all I really know." Rei answered.

"If you don't mind me asking, what junior high did you attend?" Sugawara asked.

"Jindai." Rei replied, shocking Daichi, Sugawara, and Tanaka.

"J-Jindai Junior High? That's a powerhouse! The junior high the prodigies known as The Inhumane Players went!" Tanaka exclaimed.

Rei scoffed at the mention of his ex-teammates. "Yeah... I was their sixth player. Known as The Phantom." He stated.

"I don't believe it. I never would've expected a player that was apart of The Inhumane Players at a fallen powerhouse like Karasuno." Daichi thinks to himself. "He seems to not like his former teammates though, I wonder what happened?"

Rei joined a practice match with Daichi, Sugawara, and Tanaka. He was able to receive a spike that Tanaka did.

"Nice receive, Oshiro!" Daichi complimented.

A whistle echoed throughout the gym, signaling practice was over. "Good work everyone." Daichi complimented his teammates.

"They'll probably say, 'Let us in if we can beat you in a match'." Tanaka was saying.

"That's possible." Sugawara and Rei said in unison.

"Captain!"

Kageyama and Hinata ended up challenging Daichi to a match, just like Tanaka said. "There are two other first-year applicants besides you guys." Daichi informed.

"More, huh?" Rei thinks to himself.

"It'll be a four on four match against them." Daichi informed. "We always play this game every year, just to see what the new members are made of."

"But how does it become four on four?" Hinata asked.

Daichi told Tanaka that he would be on Hinata's side, and with a little persuation, he agreed to do it.

"Understood?" Daichi asked after finishing his speech.

"Wait! Who's our other team member?" Hinata asked.

"Your other teammate is Oshiro. I'm looking forward to Saturday." Daichi informed before closing the gym doors, leaving Rei outside with them.

"Hey... You're Oshiro, right?" Hinata asked as the black haired male nodded. "What position do you play?"

"Libero." Rei answered.

"Guwaa! That means you're great at receiving." Hinata commented.

"Guwaa?" Rei questioned, raising an eyebrow in confusion.

"Damn it!" Kageyama suddenly shouted.

"What? Are you mad because you're gonna eat the penalty?" Hinata asked. "But even if you're not a setter, I'm sure you'd do fine as a regular."

"Spikers are cooler than setters anyway." Hinata continued on. "Wham! Like that!"

Kageyama started ranting about how important setters were. "Damn why is that?" Kageyama muttered, thinking back to what Daichi told him.

"All you have to do is win." Hinata said.

"You were full of confidence taking on the senpais, weren't you?" Rei added on.

Kageyama looked away, thinking about what Hinata said. "Hey. We better do something about your sorry receives of yours by Saturday." He informed.

"Sorry? But we can't use the gym." Hinata reminded him. The three of them heard someone clearing their voice, looking at the window they saw Tanaka near it.

"Oh, yes. Morning practice is at 7:00 AM tomorrow, right?" Tanaka asks loudly.

"He's helping us out. Thanks, Tanaka-san!" Rei thought.

"Of course, but why ask that so suddenly?" Sugawara questioned.

"Oh, uh, well." Tanaka replied. "Was the vice principals wig okay?"

"Stop talking about that!"

"Tomorrow..." The three of them muttered in unison.

"5:00 AM." Kageyama said.

"Don't be late." Hinata told him.

"You don't be late." Kageyama shot back as the speed soon picks up running into a sprint.

"My bag! I forgot my bag!" Hinata exclaimed.

Rei sighed to himself. "These are my teammates that are gonna be with me for the next three years." He thought, looking up at the night sky. "Still, they're better then them. What they did to him... was unforgiveable."
