CHAPTER THREE
A Sweet Moment In Life
1914.

Gwendolyn never pictured marriage as a sweet period in people's life. Her parents' marriage was hanging by a threat by the moment they exchanged their vows. It made her wonder why? Why would they get married and have a child if love was not here?

But four hours ago, Gwendolyn and Thomas said: I do. There was only family to witness their unconditional love and that was enough for both. They swore to love each other in sickness and health. Wendy would remember Thomas' face forever; the smile on his face was wider than any smile she had seen before and she could have sworn that his blue eyes were a little glossy. She wanted to remember forever the feeling she had when he lifted her veil and they locked eyes for the first time, or when he grabbed her hand and slid the ring on her finger. It felt like falling in love again.

The household was joyful, jazz played in the background as everyone danced and talked. Arthur and John were drunk while Finn was running around people. As she followed Finn with her eyes, he bumped into her legs as she snorted, picking up him up. Finn instinctively wrapped his arms around her neck, keeping her close.

"What are you doing, little lad?" Wendy queried as Thomas' eyes fell on the woman and a smile spread on his face. "Are you trying to find Polly, eh?"

Finn hummed, nodding his head, "I can't find Aunt Polly, she's not here," he whispered.

Gwendolyn cracked her neck a bit and scanned the room, finally she recognised Polly's curly hair and she pointed at her, "Look, Finn, there she is."

Finn hurried himself to jump out of Wendy's grasp, running to his aunt. Gwendolyn couldn't help but stare at Polly and recall when she first met the aunt. It had been chaotic. Polly was doubtful of Gwendolyn while Arthur and John were welcoming. Ada was a bit more doubtful too, but ended up loving Wendy. She even considered her as her sister way before Thomas and Gwendolyn became official.

The Shelby had brought light into her life that she thought long gone, they had become her family. For a while, Wendy didn't have a family of her own until she laid eyes on Thomas Shelby.

An arm sneaked around her waist and she recognised Thomas' cologne, he put his cigarette between her lips as he took the opportunity to kiss her cheek over and over again.

"Oi, listen up everyone!" Arthur shouted and the room fell silent. "Make some noise for the lovely couple right 'ere. Today we celebrate Wendy and Tom!" He finished and everyone clapped their hands together and raised their drinks in the air.

"Thank you, Arthur," Wendy said with a smile.

"No problem, sister," he replied with a shy smile.

Thomas waited for the music to start again and the people to ignore them again to waltz Wendy away from the crowded room. Soon enough, they found themselves in the office across the betting shop where noise was nonexistent. Gwendolyn drank her whole glass and put it down on the nearest table as she arched an eyebrow at her husband, as if to ask what was the reason of bringing her here.

God, husband, she thought. Thomas was her husband.

Without saying a word, he reached for her hand and brought her closer until she was close enough to press his lips on hers.  Wendy returned the kiss eagerly as Thomas' hands sneaked to her bottom so he could sit her down on the wooden desk. Unintentionally, she met his waist, craving for more and he broke the kiss with a chuckle.

"Here, now?" He asked.

Wendy ignored him as she continued to kiss his neck, unbuttoning his shirt at the same time, "Why not, eh?"

He pecked her lips once more, "People aren't far, Wendy. They're two doors away."

She shrugged, "Tommy, it's our fucking wedding day. Let's fuck, alright?"

He laughed out loud, kissing her forehead, "So eager, Mrs. Shelby."

Gwendolyn melted as she pulled him into a hungry kiss. And all of a sudden, it was only the two of them as if nothing else mattered. Gwendolyn and Thomas Shelby having sex in the study next to a room full of guests, celebrating their wedding.

A little while after, a cigarette was roosting between her lips as Tommy was carefully putting her tights back on. Gwendolyn let out a giggle as his hands ticked her, and he raised an eyebrow at her before kissing the inside of her thigh. Raising to his feet, he stole the cigarette from her and put it between his lips, he then exhaled the smoke and stared at the ceiling.

The door flew open, revealing John, "Tom—" he paused as his eyes darted toward Wendy who had her back facing Tom so he could zip up the dress.

"What is it, John?" He asked, clearly annoyed that John had barged into the room.

"Er, hello, Wendy," he said before focusing back on Thomas. "We were looking for you. Anthony would like to go out with you."

Thomas puffed the smoke, turning on his heels to meet his brother's eyes, "Well, you tell them I'm busy, eh?"

"Tom, go with them. I'll be alright," she said softly. "I'll stay with Polly and Ada."

"Right."

He kissed her lips one more time before leaving the house with his brothers and a few cousins. After all, today was all about celebrating. Gwendolyn joined the main room again, instantly greeted by Ada, and Polly who had a smirk on her face.

"At least try to hide those rebel locks, eh?" Polly laughed, ruffling Wendy's hair to make her look presentable again. "Much better."

Chuckles left Wendy's lips as she was unable to contain her happiness, "Fuck, I'm not even sorry."

Ada slapped her arm playfully, "You could have waited until everyone was gone! Fucking hell."

"Just wait until you fall in love, Ada. You'll know how it feels," Polly said, bringing her black cigarette to her lips. "For now, we must dance until dawn."

Gwendolyn didn't waste a second as she grabbed Ada and Polly's hand, dragging them in the middle of the room. Laughters erupted from the women as Gwendolyn found herself dancing with random relatives that she never met prior to the wedding. The night felt young as the three women danced around the familiar living room, they danced until everyone was gone and there was only Finn remaining on the sofa.

Suddenly, footsteps were heard but Wendy didn't brother looking up. The footsteps were too familiar. Soon, John's viral laugh was heard throughout the house and Polly groaned drunkenly.

"Look at that, Tom. Fucking women passed out on the sofa. What the fuck is going on?" He exclaimed.

Polly shot him a deadly stare, "Lower your fucking voice, John."

"Sorry, Aunt Pol."

Thomas made his way to Wendy, kneeling down so he was at her level and he kissed her forehead, "Did you have fun last night, Mrs Shelby?"

Wendy sat up and patted the place next to her, "It was fun. It'd have been better with you."

"I know but the boys wanted to go in the forest," he told her, patting her cheek. He offered a tired smile before saying. "Is Mrs Shelby ready to go to bed?"

Before she could answer, Arthur swung in the conversation, "What was your favourite part of the wedding, Wendy?"

"The moment in the study, right Tom?" John teased.

"Fuck off, John," Thomas muttered as he stood up and Wendy followed.

"My favourite moment was when you called me your sister, Arthur," Wendy said lowly and she could have sworn his eyes grew bigger, and his smile got tinier. Almost shy. "Night everyone."

"You should say morning, Wendy," Ada mumbled.

Everyone laughed before Thomas grabbed Wendy's hand, dragging her upstairs. He stole one kiss or two on the way up, and Wendy couldn't help but giggle out loud as she pushed the doors. Cupping his face, she sailed their lips together as he laid her gently on the mattress.

Truth was that Gwendolyn had never felt more alive than today. They couldn't keep their hands off each other and she found herself wondering if she would ever get bored of loving Thomas. With a shaky sigh, Tommy pulled away from her, resting his head on her chest as his arm held her close.

Instinctively, her fingers begun to scratch his scalp, "I love you, Tom."

"I love you too, Wendy," he replied. "Gwendolyn Shelby. Mrs. Shelby," he repeated to himself and hummed in a content manner. Gwendolyn could hear the smile in his voice as he said it, and she chuckled quietly.

"Finally."

He looked up at her, kissing her lips gently, "You've always been part of my family. A part of me," he whispered.

With a hum, she closed her eyes and waited for the sandman to make its appearance and make her fall into a deep slumber. After dancing, her whole body ached and she begged to sleep for a bit. Thomas seemed as exhausted as she was and minutes later, Mr and Mrs. Shelby were asleep in each other's arms.
