Melody was excited about meeting Stephanie and Benjamin in person. To her, the talented siblings seemed very charming.

However, the siblings weren't a bit like they were in public. Stephanie appeared wearing a fuzzy pink robe and her hair was messy and unkept. She obviously wasn't taking care of herself.

Benjamin was very lazy and was still in bed when Melody arrived at the Magnus household. He only came downstairs after lunch in Batman pyjamas.

"Er... Hi there," said Melody awkwardly.

"Oh, hello," said Benjamin. He looked like he was wishing that he was dressed decently. Despite her ragged clothes, Melody obviously took better care of herself than the Magnus twins.

"Oh, hi," said Stephanie carelessly. "Sorry you had to see me like this. I would have dressed properly if I knew that you were coming."

"I thought that I told your brother," said Vincent.

"I must have been asleep," said Benjamin.

Melody felt awkward. This wasn't what she had been anticipating. She tried to break the ice. "So where is your mother?"

Wrong question to ask. The Magnus siblings looked very sad.

"Our mother passed away when we were little," said Stephanie.

"Oh. I'm sorry," said Melody.

"Don't be. You couldn't have known," said Benjamin, yawning lazily. "Your room is next to Stephanie's. Though Dad wants to know if you would like to go to school with us. We go to boarding school, so you won't be able to..."

"I would like to," said Melody. "I haven't been to school for ages."

Melody was stunned by her new room. It had a king-sized princess bed, an enormous vanity, a walk-in closet, and an adjoining bathroom which had a bathtub almost as big as a baby pool.

Melody tried on many of the clothes. Some of them didn't suit her at all, but she liked a purple blouse with a blue skirt, knee-high black socks and black Mary Jane shoes. She tied her hair into pigtails.

Melody barely recognised herself in the mirror. She looked like a pretty society lady instead of the slave she had been for years.

Suddenly, Melody heard sobbing from the next room. She wondered what was going on. She looked in Stephanie's room and discovered Stephanie face down in her bed.

Stephanie's bedroom was completely pink. It looked like the kind of bedroom that belonged in Barbie's Dreamhouse. Now that Melody thought of it, Stephanie was always wearing pink.

Stephanie's bed was littered with pieces of paper all over it. Melody went to talk to her.

"Stephanie, why is there so much paper on the bed?"

"I want to forget," muttered Stephanie.

"Forget what?" asked Melody.

Stephanie looked up, her face tear-stained and her hair messier than ever. "Larry Evans."

"Larry was my boyfriend," said Stephanie. "He made me so happy. Told me I was beautiful no matter what, listening to me whenever I ranted to him, and always looked after me if I was sick. We were so happy together. We were even planning our wedding...

"Larry got sick. He wouldn't tell me what it was. Then I found out there was something wrong with his heart. The boy I loved had become as weak as he was once strong. I wanted to give him my heart. But he wouldn't hear about it. Said that he would rather die than let me sacrifice myself for him.

"I spent every single moment with him. We even celebrated his seventeenth birthday at the hospital. He told me that it was the best one he ever had. I promised him that we would have more fun tomorrow. Only there was no tomorrow. He passed away in his sleep that night."

"That must be awful," said Melody. "But why do you want to forget?"

"Because I thought that maybe if I cut up the photographs of us, I wouldn't have anything to remind me of Larry and the pain will go away," said Stephanie. "It's why I stopped taking care of myself. I haven't been motivated. Ben hasn't been motivated for years. And now I don't want to do anything."

Melody sighed. "I'm so sorry Stephanie," she said. "I can't imagine how painful that must be for you. I lost my parents when I was seven. I miss them terribly."

"You see, my mother died from a deadly case of influenza," said Stephanie. "She was the sweetest woman ever. She also was a born musician. That's where Ben and I got it from. We perform to honour her memory."

The two girls talked about their childhoods. It seemed strange to talk about a time when they were happy and carefree. Melody learned that Stephanie and Benjamin were suffering from depression and were afraid of seeing a therapist.

Melody had an idea. "How about I play my guitar for you. You can sing if you want."

"I don't know..." started Stephanie.

"Come on, please," said Melody. "I haven't played music for anyone since my parents died."

Stephanie sighed. "Fine," she said. "You're lucky that I like singing."

So Melody found her guitar and started playing. Stephanie started to sing.
