Hello, fellow disciples! We've been searching far and wide for individuals who have cultivated for a long time. This month, we bring to you an interview with sunset_vermont, the author of Emperor and I and His Majesty and I.

Tell us a bit about yourself!

Hello, and thank you for this opportunity. I feel honored and humbled to take part in this interview.

I am a woman in my 20s and I have been writing on Wattpad for the past five years. I am currently doing my articles to be a Chartered Accountant. My favorite food is sushi and I love to drink green tea, hot chocolate and rooibos tea. Also, there can never be no Nutella in my house. Lastly, I love to watch Asian dramas, read books and write in my spare time; among other things.

What is your writing process? Do you outline everything or write as things come to mind? Why?

Before I start writing, I do a lot of research to avoid feeding people unrealistic content. Thereafter, I outline the general story on paper. I do this to ensure my story has life and the important things are not missed. These are the questions I must answer: who are the main and supporting characters? What are their goals? What will make each character relatable to the reader?

What are some things that influenced your story?

My love for Asian dramas and the culture. At the time I started, I felt there were a few stories that represented this beautiful culture. Moreover, I wanted to write a romance story that is not typical.

Tell us about the main character of one of your stories. What inspired their creation?

She is a bold, strong-willed character who has experienced many hardships. I was inspired to make her a strong female lead after I watched the Chinese drama, Princess Agents. Another thing is she was abandoned by many people and I wanted to write on this because I know many people have had this happen to them. My hope is that they would know they are special and loveable. No rejection in life should devalue your worth.

What were some challenges you experienced while writing the story?

Burnout. Although I may know what to write, sometimes I experience seasons where I do not have the motivation to continue.

What message do you hope your story will tell your readers?

To be relentless in life and not give up. Do not give up on your dreams and for those looking for love, it's out there.

If you woke up in a time or place that was very different from reality, what would you do?

Cry. That would mean I have been separated from my loved ones.

If there was something you could learn (i.e., some spell, some martial arts, etc.) like the main character in your book, what would it be?

Healing people. Growing up, I had health problems. Although I am doing well now, I know how awful it is to be sick. I wish everyone who is not doing well to keep fighting, do not give up, and live.

Would you rather go through a lifetime of never finding love or be willing to go through several lifetimes of hardships just to save your love? Why?

I would rather not find love. I do not like hardships haha. It is okay to be alone as well, you do not need a significant other to be happy if you are a whole person.

What is your favorite creature from Asian mythology or folklore? Why?

The Azure Dragons. They are the most powerful of all Chinese mythological creatures and it is said they create clouds with their breath. I love them because they symbolize good fortune, auspicious powers, wisdom, strength and benevolence. I think with wisdom, we can solve most world problems.

What is your favorite Asian myth? Why?

Kindred spirits : the story of Boya and Ziqi.

There was a renowned musician, Boya, known for playing the guqin. This is a traditional Chinese string instrument. One day a woodcutter, Ziqi, passed through his realm. Upon hearing Boya's tune, he nodded contemplatively and said, "There are high mountains and flowing waters in these notes you play." Boya paused instantly because never had someone understood his music so keenly before. The two became close companions, but Ziqi eventually passed away. Boya was heartbroken and played his last piece before Ziqi's resting place. Afterwards, he then tore his guqin and never played again.

I love this myth because I think music can bring people together and I really love music. Last year, I listened to more than 65,000 minutes on Spotify haha. Also, I believe friendship is one of the most important aspects in life that you will find as a basis for any relationship, be it with family, significant other, or companions.

Thank you for having me and happy living!
