The blood was spreading across the ground.
He could only stand and stare at the scene. His ex and his ex's girlfriend are both dead, caused by an accident he could have prevented.
Did he regret it?
Partially.
Is he glad they're dead?
Partially.
He walked over to the corpse of his ex and got down on his knees next to it. He held his hand, ignoring the blood. His hand felt cold. It was only a minute since the "accident" happened. His body became so cold so fast.
He lifted his hand and closed his ex's eyes. Now he looked like he was just sleeping. The Hero Core has loosened from the impact. He reached out and got a hold of it. With a slight twist, it came of clean, with some blood splatters on it. After wiping it away, the Hero Core with the gold protective glass was like new. The young hero sat there starring at it and only came back to his senses whe he heard the others call for him. He got back up, putting the Hero Core away, and  picked up the body of his ex, while someone else took the female hero's corpse to which he didn't pay attention.

After repairs, some heroes of his team were arguing about the mission. One half said that the deaths could've been prevented if he helped, others say he had his own troubles and didn't have time or chance to step in. The young one didn't listen to any of those words. He walked past them without them noticing and up to his dorm. There he took the core of his ex out. Something about it just fascinates him. He stared at it and smiled to himself. Despite everything, he still loved his ex. And now, he gets to carry him anywhere he goes.

Years later

He opened the drawer of the table and took the Hero Core out. It has collected some dust over time and the colour has faded a little bit, but it still looked almost new.
He sat down on his bed and flipped the core around in his hands.
"Brother."
He looked up. A robot of dark blue colouring and red eyes stood in the door frame.
"Are you mission ready?"
"Yeah, one second." Placing down the core on his bedside table and grabbing his mask, he stood up and went over to the other robot, who headed out. He turned around to his room. The Hero Core layed next to an old picture of which the colour has faded a lot. Two heroes standing next to each other holding hands, looking as happy as they can get. Underneath was written "Maxwell Desiderio and Aaron Hunter".

Desiderio was dead.

"And Aaron Hunter exists no more."
