Seven, Dinner Fuss

Dinner is supposedly smothered pork. But really it looks just like brown chunky barf with a thin silky layer of slime on top.

But this is war. And beggars can't be choosers.

I sit alone, keeping to myself, begging not to be noticed or talked to.

I have two letters to write about the last couple days.

Ugh.

I feel bad for my father.

He really does truly love me. And I him, but he has to realize, I'm not a little girl running around the bakery anymore.

Man, it feels like yesterday.

Baking the bread with him, offering it to the homeless by the street, cutting veggetables for the soups.

It may have been only 19 years ago since my father first held me, but I have a feeling every time he see's me... He doesn't see a strong woman, he spies a small vulnerable baby on his porch sitting in an old rickety basket.

19 years.

I sigh and push the mushrooms around my plate.

"Everything alright?" Someone asks and I look up to find a pair of blue eyes staring at me from across the table.

I straighten my back and nod, "I'm fine. Go eat, Barnes." I instruct but he does the opposite and plops himself down in front of me and I sigh, annoyed.

"What's eating you?" He asks, and cuts a huge piece of pork and shoves it in his huge mouth.

"Nothing that matters." I frown and manage to eat a mushroom.

"Y'know," he swallows hard, almost choking, "you gals are really complicated." He says, leaning back in his chair.

I almost choke myself by this comment.

"Y'know," I start with a smile, "you're absolutely right. Women am I right?" I say and he rolls his eyes.

"That's a side I haven't seen yet." He says intrigued.

"What?" I ask, eating more.

"The humor side of you. I mean, I knew from the moment I saw you that you'd be a comedian." He says eating a lot more.

"Oh really? So you are one of those psychics? Mystifying." I joke.

"You have no idea." He winks.

"Oh god." I laugh, "you're going with that role?"

"Role?" He smiles.

"You're deciding whether to portray the witty guy or mysterious. You're testing me."

"Am I?" He asks.

"Yes. You are going to see which side I am more intrigued with. I've seen it. Just be you."

"And then what?" He smirks.

"We'll see." I smile.

"So, Veronica, I was wondering... There's a da-"

"Barnes, you're positioned over there. I'm sorry if he was bothering you, Ron." Howard interrupts.

I smile to Howard and look back at Barnes. "You're absolutely right Howard." I smile.

"You heard her terms, scadaddle." Howard frowns and Bucky slowly rises with a smile and a wink before backing away with his tray.

"Sorry again, Ronnie." He smiles sitting right next to me.

"So, how was the run?"

"Hilarious." I smile and he does the same.

"Yeah, well its good to see them smile once in a while." He says looking around at them all.

"Yes... How were your machines acting today?" I ask, eating more slop.

"Eh. Got a little jagged but, nothing I can't fix."

I smile, he has a lot of self confidence.

"I have to go write some letters." I stand and step away but he grabs my hand.

"There's a dance tomorrow, would you like to go with me?" He asks with a smile.

"I'll see if I'm not busy. Sounds like fun." I say and he nods letting go.

I walk out with a smile on my lips.

"Why's your face so red?" Someone asks and I turn swiftly.

"Barnes," I sigh, "please stop with the surprise visits. Go prepare for the night. Thank you."

"I will." He says, narrowing his eyes at me with a smile before walking back into the food hall.

I walk to the women's tent and grab two pieces of paper and my pen.

Dear Pegs,

Thanks for writing me. I love that you're using my techniques! Makes me feel like a proud mother! Haha!

I will also be writing my father, like you said, he needs me.

There's apparently a dance tomorrow and Howard invited me. I'm sure I'll enjoy my time, at least a different scenery for a bit.

I can't write much, there are drills late today!

Love you,

Ron.

Dear dad,

Hello, its been a while.

Peg told me to write you.

First of all, let me say, I'm sorry.

And I love you.

Don't feel blue that I'm no longer by your side at the moment.

But after the war, I can assure you I'll be back.

I love you. See you soon, dad.

-Ronnie-

Unedited.

Should I continue?

I have another written chapter but Idk....
