This page serves as an introduction to the protagonist of the story. Near is an aloof, passive, and laid-back detective who serves as the foil to most perpetrators of law. Holding great power in the geopolitical affairs of other countries, he mostly pertains to the investigation of cases such as largescale homicide or genocide. He has been rather controversial amongst the tight knit group of the SPK (Special Provision for Kira) for his passive nature. Near is indifferent, selfless, and somewhat selfish like his predecessor, L, but seems to be passive in his willingness to take risks. His passiveness has led the Special Provision for Kira in light of the reemergence of new killings to question his integrity and the Interpol to dislike him significantly except for some members, who seem to reserve some sort of atypical respect for Near and his way of functioning.

Despite the controversy surrounding his name, Near goes at his pace, and holds the title of L, meaning he is supposedly the world's greatest detective. He has the ability to mobilize thousands of investigators. However, his passivity and lethargic behavior presents him as careless, lazy, and infrequent in his duties as an armchair detective, presenting a questionable side of his persona. After solving the Kira case once and for all, the resurgence of Kira killings has made Near almost numb to another outbreak which has claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands and thousands of hundreds of groups and ethnic groups around the world at an unprecedented higher scale than the original holder of the notebook, which only normally killed inside of Japan. This has caused worry for the SPK, but for Near, it seems to be another common occurrence of a Kira cult resurgence that will die down soon.
