First off, if you haven't finished this book, don't read this, it contains many big spoilers!

So I've been seeing lots of comments and confusion over why Ellie didn't die. I thought I'd explain even though I thought it was obvious.

In the books when Sirius is battling Bellatrix, he dies because he falls through the veil. There is no proof, or description of Bellatrix using the Killing Curse. Bellatrix knocked Sirius back with her spell, which caused him to fall through the veil, resulting in his death. This is why at first Harry is so adamant that Sirius will come back to him.

So when Ellie knocks Sirius out of the way to save him, she is hit by Bellatrix's curse, which again isn't the killing Curse so that's why she didn't die.

Also, in the Deathly Hallows (I think) George's ear is cursed off when a dark Curse narrowly misses him, hence why Ellie's arm was able to be cursed off. Its all Canon, so I don't see what all the confusion is about.
