When Dolores skipped town with Oscar Garcia, Fredo felt devastated. Late at night, she made bedroom promises. He believed her. When she whispered her pregnancy into his ear, he thought the child belonged to him.

Dolores informed four other men of the impending child. She did not precisely know who fathered her baby. However, Oscar had more to offer her. Oscar owned a large hacienda out in the desert.

Fredo wandered into the desert. Alone, he contemplated his life. Memories of his happy golden youth tormented him. In his mind's eye, he saw Elsa on her swing. Her pigtails flew out behind her as she sang, "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head."

The hot desert sun beat down upon Fredo. He wished for the cool refreshing rain showers of his old hometown. Mexico offered few opportunities for a young man. Lackadaisically, he worked around his grandmother's farm. Abuela kept him as long as he kept up his chores.

Still, Fredo did not face up to his mistakes. In mind and distance, Elsa remained far from his grasp. She was too good for him. He reminded himself; that she could do better.

As the sun set upon the yellow sands, Fredo's shoulders sunk. Turning away, he returned to the farm and went to his lonely bed.
