Elsa looked down upon Madison as she lay sleeping in her crib. Awaking, the baby turned startling blue eyes toward her mother. Elsa gathered her up and sat in the rocker. Softly cooing, she sang, "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head."

Mother and daughter gently swayed in the rocker. Madison settled into the crook of Elsa's arm. When the baby slept again, Elsa returned her to her crib.

The new baby delighted Elsa. However, she remained melancholy about her marriage. Harold tried to please her. He sent flowers every day. As much as she appreciated them, they no longer thrilled her.

Often, Elsa dreamed about Fredo. In her mind, she replaced her husband with her lost love. It helped for a little while but not for long. The years stretched ahead of her. Already, she regretted her hasty marriage.

The new mother pulled the blanket up to the baby's chest. Carefully, she rested her hand above Madison's heart and felt the soft thump-thump. Perhaps, the child would draw her closer to her husband.

Harold worked hard to provide for the family. Soon—too soon—Elsa would return to her teller's job at the bank. Life would drag on...and on...and on...

Elsa did not anticipate any more children. When she made love to Harold, she closed her eyes tightly and pictured Fredo. Her heart sank. It was the only way she could tolerate her husband.

Fervently, Elsa admonished herself about Fredo. His cruel disappearance continued to pang at her heart. She should forget him. Nevertheless, the heartache continued.
