Why wouldn't Varath be human?! Your opening is suspenseful and mysterious, I sense the orphanage is more than what it seems with how it's introduced. Maybe the orphans are on sell for a bad cause? For something evil? There isn't much imagination given to the surroundings, play them up more, also the characters emotions and expressions needs improving.
