Jake had gone to the pool every single day with his 2 friends, Cream and Mavis. He hadn't really hung out with the pair since it was quite obvious to everyone around him that he was the third wheel in their relationship and he hated that.

He decided to venture off, leaving his two friends to be by themselves, whereas he ventured off into the water park alone.

The place was a big water park, instead of amusement park rides, people screamed going down slides and the wave pool's giant waves seemed to swallow people up.

Mer people served as lifeguards, their scales shimmering in the light as they dove down into the water, grabbing someone from the dangerous waters.

Jake had never been really the one to... Enjoy swimming and when someone reached into his swimsuit shorts and grabbed his favorite item, a glistening shell that his mother had said his father gave her was stolen, he noticed the yellow pipsqueak try to run, slither through the crowd as he screamed wildly.

" GIVE THAT BACK !! " Jake shouted, his voice filled with anger as he took off, his eyes glaring to the thief's back.

What happened next , happened in a whirlwind. Something caused the pipsqueak to trip, landing the male into the deep end.

" H...help ! " He choked.

Jake sighed as he reached for the yellow male's hand and after a few attempts, grabbed it.

The male smirked as he had Jake's hand and tugged at it hard, seemingly forcing Jake into the water.

The pipsqueak climbed out off the pool as Jake struggled to keep a steady pace in his swimming. His eyes wide and the pipsqueak saluted and ran away.

" ... You ... " Jake growled, he felt his body become heavier and heavier as the water dragged him downwards. All he could do was hold his breath as his lungs felt like they were having a panic attack.

All of a sudden, he felt warm hands circle around him and then pull him into a backwards hug.

" Allow me to help you sir , " a male's voice responded from behind him as Jake struggled in the hug.

" I don't need help, that pipsqueak stole my shell ! "

" Oh, that shell was yours ? " One hand left Jake's waist as his other hand held the shell of Jake's unknown father.

He grabbed it as the merman swam him towards the shallow end and Jake turned around , seeing a scarlet red fox , with one blue and one yellow eye.

" Thanks . " Jake responded, his voice trying to not show emotion. Jake didn't like being the one to be saved and he crossed his arms as the merman flicked his tail a bit.

" No prob , don't thank me for saving you life ~ ! "

Jake crossed his arms and then leaned towards the merman who pressed up against the pool side, laying his head on the concrete as he stared up at Jake, his eyes perked like he was interested in what he had to say next.

Until the merman spoke. " I'm Todd by the way, are you alone or something ? "

" I'm not alone .. " he simply stated, his eyes not giving Todd any hints to what he was feeling , but if he had to be completely honest, he was. He wished that he could face the choice of being the third wheel but he knew that he would be a downer on their fun.

" It sure seems like it .. " Todd responded, he placed his hands in the water, splashing it just a bit as he seemed bored with the conversation.

" Jake . "

" Jake ...? " The merman pondered, letting his name slip off his tongue as he responded after a brief moment of silence. " I do hope you know what you're looking for Jake. "

And that's when the merman disappeared under the surface , not visible anywhere in Jake's range.

He clutched the shell and sat down, placing his feet in the water as a familiar feeling washed over him,

Loneliness.

" Do I push people away...? " Was the only question he asked, but no one answered it.
