One Day Only

One summer like day

In first weeks of spring

One day's our limit

As southern winds swing

Up to northern states

To bring us a tease

And welcome relief

From days of deep freeze

I rush through my chores

Then sit on my deck

Wind gusts whip my hair

Despite braids tight check

Frantic tree branches

Bounce up and then down

And then side to side

Like jigs in hoedown

Wind bellows dull roar

Around homes and trees

Watch a crow struggle

On tree branch trapeze

A fellow crow strips

Bark from a tree limb

Then drops strips on ground

A bug hunt or whim?

Peanuts are sliding

Right off of deck rail

To delight of squirrels

Flick bushy gray tails

Flickers loud warble

A call for a mate

A wild forest sound

Feel my soul vibrate

Simple connection

To primal heart strings

Soak up rowdy day

As feral blast clings

When day turns to night

And winds swing around

Our temperature drops

Storms roll into town

Rain beats on windows

And bolts of light zing

And chill in the air

Reminds us it's spring
